Everton stand firm on £40m Stones

"Another day and more speculation surrounding John Stones - this time that Chelsea are considering whether to make a fourth and final offer of £40m.
Getty ImagesCopyright: Getty Images
My understanding is that Everton remain as unmoved now as they were a month ago when Chelsea made their first offer of £20m - but it would be a sign of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's determination (some might say desperation) to land Stones if they doubled their original bid.
Everton need to do business of their own and are interested in River Plate defender Ramiro Funes Mori and Dynamo Kiev playmaker Andriy Yarmolenko. But there does not seem the slightest appetite to sell Stones to fund those moves."

West Bromwich Albion rejecting Tottenham's initial overtures for Saido Berahino is just the opening salvo in what could become a protracted saga in the closing weeks of the transfer window.
There are fewer more determined chairmen in the game than Jeremy Peace and Daniel Levy, so it'll be really interesting to see who wins this particular battle of wills.

Should Spurs come back with an offer in excess of £20m - as has been reported - then that will be very difficult to refuse.
Furthermore, by saying they don't want to sell, Peace is leaving the ball in Berahino's court. If the striker indicates he wants to go, then that will accelerate the process.
Either way, this whole scenario still has some distance to run.

Everton stand firm on £40m Stones

"Another day and more speculation surrounding John Stones - this time that Chelsea are considering whether to make a fourth and final offer of £40m.

Essien's influence on new Chelsea signing
Football
New Chelsea defender Baba Rahman says Michael Essien helped influence his decision to join the club. Essien, 32, won two league titles, four FA Cups, one Champions League and one League Cup during nine years at the club.
Rahman, who has joined from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, is the third Ghanaian to sign for Chelsea following Essien and Christian Atsu.
"Yes, I watched him [Essien] whenever I could. In Ghana they only showed the Premier League at that time so I was always watching him, he was a great player for Chelsea," Rahman, 21, tells Chelsea's website.

Just spoken to a contact at Barcelona. I'm told Pedro boarded a plane at 11:30 local time (10:30 BST) to fly to London to finalise his move to Chelsea. The bid from Chelsea is 28m euros (£19.7m) plus a further 2m euros (£1.4m) in add ons.
Pedro - what the papers say
Football
Why does Pedro seem likely to end up at Chelsea rather than Man United? here's what some of the papers are saying.
Daily Mail: "Pedro was understood to be unimpressed by United's pursuit after failing to be convinced that they really wanted him to join."
The Guardian: "United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward flew to Spain earlier this week and had been confident a deal would be concluded once the precise structure of the payments over a £22m move had been agreed."
Daily Express: "Manchester City have also been linked with Pedro, but he looks poised to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho made a dramatic late hijacking for the forward last night."

Bill Rice
BBC Radio Manchester
Manchester United look far from a team ready to challenge for the Champions' League title on the evidence of the win over Club Brugge, but at least there were some signs of positive, attacking football following two unconvincing wins in the Premier League.
The big plus was the performance of two-goal hero Memphis Depay, who looks much more dangerous cutting in from the left on to his right foot. Chris Smalling looked solid in central defence, and Luke Shaw was impressive at left-back.
On the flip side it's now nine games without a goal for United for Wayne Rooney, while Michael Carrick was also subbed off at half-time having scored the early own goal.

Leicester to complete Inler deal

Leicester City look set to complete the signing of Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler. BBC Radio Leicester Sport understands that he's undergone a medical and could be a Foxes player by the weekend.
He would be City's sixth signing of the summer and the second midfielder to join the club following the capture of N'Golo Kante earlier this summer. At the weekend, Claudio Ranieri said: "Inler is a good player with a good career. He's another leader, another central midfielder who can play very well with the ball."
Worried about Wayne
Football
Just about the only downside for United is the form of their skipper.
Wayne Rooney once again looked out of sorts and was replaced by Marouane Fellaini, who promptly grabbed the third, important goal.
"He worked hard as Wayne Rooney always does but he looks like he has lost a little bit of belief in front of goal," said BBC Radio 5 live pundit Chris Waddle. "He is snatching at things and doesn't look composed in front of goal and that must be a concern for manager Louis Van Gaal."
Rooney has not scored in a competitive game for United since April 4 and a 3-1 home win over Aston Villa.
'We deserved it'
Football
Needless to say United manager Louis van Gaal was pretty chuffed after the victory.
"We deserved much more because we created a lot of chances. It is what I am always saying, you have to be effective. We have a lot of chances and only three goals," said the boss.
"I am happy because of the last goal. We have practised that before. We put him in the penalty area because he has that quality. It is not a simple opponent. It is still a game but, because of that last goal, it is more confident for us."
The victory leaves United in a strong position, with Brugge needing to win at least 2-0 next week to knock out United and progress to the Champions League group stages.
Depay at the double
Football
So then, to Memphis and Man United.
The Reds must be pretty confident of qualifying for the Champions League group stages after a 3-1 first-leg win over Club Brugge at Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal's side recovered from the shock of going a goal down eight minutes in - Michael Carrick putting through his own net - to win handsomely, Depay scoring twice (including a lovely curling effort from 25-yards) and Marouane Fellaini bagging a late third.
"I am very happy for Memphis because a player needs goals," said United boss Louis Van Gaal. "I said it was a matter of time and hopefully he shall continue. He is 21 and he has only played two seasons for PSV, I have confidence in him."
