Speaking at the Soccerex conference in Manchester, Strauss, who told Pietersen in May that he would not be considered for England, said: "I think the danger at that time is that particular issue would overshadow everything that happened on the pitch over the course of the summer.

"I would hate to say just because I made that decision we won the Ashes, I don't think that's true at all. What I was trying to do was provide clarity going forward so everyone knew where they stood.

"I think that clarity has helped to be honest, but it's up to the players to go out and perform. I think the team has moved on and the team is in a pretty good place."

When Sir Bradley Wiggins really does pack in this pedalling lark there is a career in prognosticating or punditry waiting for him.

Knowing these roads so well, he predicted this stage would provide some good clues as to who is going to win this race outright and he said the day's finale in Colne would come down to a small bunch.

With 20 minutes to go, we have six riders up front - attacking each other - and a chasing group, with some real contenders, 20 seconds behind. They will fancy their chances of closing that gap.

Team Sky have two of their trump cards in the mix, Pete Kennaugh and Wout Poels, but their former leader Wiggins will not be taking part in the dash for the line. He is six minutes back with Sunday's winner Elia Viviani.

  42. Tour of Britain news

    Road cycling

    Matt Slater

BBC Sport at the Tour of Britain

It has become a cliche to say there are massive crowds waiting for the riders at the finish of a bike race in the UK but that does not make it any less true.

There was a crush in Clitheroe this morning, lots in Longridge and a scrum in Slaidburn. The situation at the line in Colne is congested.

The peloton is currently skirting Pendle Hill for the second time and should reach Colne in an hour or so.

I caught a quick word with local dignitary Sir Bradley Wiggins at the start and he thought this stage could be the hardest of the week, with only a select group of the race's best riders contesting the finish. They will not be short of support up Colne's Albert Road.

    g

Asked if he would "freshen things up" Strachan replied: "Yes. The work rate with this squad is unquestionable. These guys play for Scotland for nothing.

"You've got to admire what they do because international football is getting a lot harder than when I played."

  46. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

And that's it from the news conference.

    A few news lines...

Michael Carrick has been ruled out of the squad with a calf injury that Roy Hodgson does not think will lead to a long-term stay on the sidelines.

There will be changes tomorrow to the starting 11 that faced San Marino.

Wayne Rooney would love to break Bobby Charlton's long-standing goals record in front of the fans at the 'iconic' Wembley stadium.

And that's that. Over and out from England hq.

  47. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Roy Hodgson on Rooney: "Wayne's record speaks for itself, I don't know if comparisons are such a good thing. Wayne's record is quite incredible already, goodness knows how many caps he will win and how many goals he will score.

    g

"I never get the impression with Wayne he is trying just to score goals and grab headlines, I always get the impression he is trying play for his team, that's why we all appreciate him so much."

  48. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

About the squad heading to France next summer, Hodgson replied: "The nucleus of the squad I'll take to the Euros has formed itself over the last three years.

"One has to hope that nucleus remains in place. We are missing nine players for these games who have been a part of that nucleus so that gives a chance for the ones who step in now to show they can become part of the nucleus too.

"We have to find out how we can get the best 23 players to represent us in that tournament."

  49. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Roy Hodgson, asked about his ideas for the European Championships in 2016: "It is quite fascinating to be sat here talking about June 2016 in September. I'm a football coach, have been for 40 years, and generally I don't look more than two months ahead, ever.

"I have lots of ideas for the tournament but I haven't even run that by our players yet. So I'll run it by them before I do the press."

  50. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Roy Hodgson on England's chances at Euro 2016: "It will all depend on the year ahead, how we continue what we see as an improvement, how much backing we get for some of our ideas from the FA and possibly the Premier League - it would be nice if they didn't fall upon deaf ears - but also it depends on the mentality of the players.

"If you lose the first game for whatever reason you are immediately on the back foot so a lot of things have to click into place, but the one thing I know we will do is we will be as well prepared as possible, no details left to chance, so when the players go into the first game they will feel ready for the task."

  51. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney on Harry Kane: "He is a great player. he had a fantastic season last year but everyone needs to slow down a bit with the pressure you have tried to put him under four games into this season.

    g

"We all need to get behind him as a country because he is a special player and I'm sure that goal against San Marino will give him extra confidence."

  52. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney on breaking the England goalscoring record: "It would be nice to do it at Wembley, an iconic stadium to everyone in England and around the world. It would be nice to do it tomorrow but the most important thing is to win the game and finish the group top.

"I feel I've got quite a lot of games to play for England, I'd be disappointed if I ended with 50 goals, hopefully by the time I have finished playing it will be more goals than 50."

  53. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Roy Hodgson: "Throughout the qualifying matches we've had a certain procedure and when Wayne and I speak to you we know the team, the players know the team but I haven't been in the habit of announcing the team and I don't see why I should change it.

"Yes there will be changes I can give you that. We take the game very seriously, we would dearly love to put on a performance and win the game.

"I hope Wayne can break the record because then we can have some press conferences where he doesn't have to talk about the pressure he is under to break it."

  54. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

    They've arrived. Hoorah.

First question to Roy, about the injured Michael Carrick.

    g

"He has a calf injury. We don't believe it is that serious," says the boss. "It was odd because it came out of nowhere, at the start of the warm-up in san Marino. He felt something and as a precaution we've not pushed him.

"He has had a preliminary scan and the doctors decided there is something there and it is up to United to look at it more closely."

Does that mean a chance for Jonjo Shelvey? "You'll have to wait and see on that one."

    Ooh, you big tease Roy.

  55. England news conference

England v Switzerland (Tues, 19:45 BST)

    g

Grealish rejected a call-up to Martin O'Neill's Republic squad in June, saying he needed time to decide which country to represent.

Wayne Rooney says he wants his England team-mates to learn from his mistake prior to Euro 2012, when he went on a family holiday to Las Vegas.

England have qualified for Euro 2016 and skipper Rooney believes players would benefit from staying at home before the tournament in France starts next June.

The 29-year-old, who was suspended for the first two games of Euro 2012, said: "I went on holiday, which I regret. I thought it was no problem and now I know I shouldn't have done it."

England face Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday, with Rooney requiring one more goal to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton's England all-time scoring record of 49 goals.
