    Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy says the club are "very proud" to be part of progress in the area after plans for a new ground were given the go ahead by the council.

    Spurs' new home will host some NFL matches and at 61,000 capacity, it will hold fractionally more fans than Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and plans include room for a cinema and new homes.

    The club hope to be playing at the new venue by the 2018-19 season.

    Russia president Vladimir Putin says suspended Fifa president Sepp Blatter, embroiled in a string of corruption scandals, should be given the Nobel Peace Prize.

    "That is someone who should be given the Nobel Peace Prize," Putin said of the Fifa boss who is facing corruption allegations over his management of the world footballing body.

    "His contribution to the global humanitarian sphere is colossal."

    Fifa are under investigation by both Swiss and US authorities.

    The Swiss Justice Ministry says it has frozen millions of Swiss francs related to world soccer body FIFA.

    "U.S. authorities asked for documents related to 50 accounts at different banks, through which corruption money is supposed to have transited," ministry spokesman Folco Galli said in a statement.

    He said a "high double-digit million amount" had been frozen following the U.S. query. 

    Fifa is under investigation by both US and Swiss authorities for corruption.

    Franck Ribery's thigh injury is worse than first thought and the Bayern Munich star is set to miss the next eight weeks, according to German magazine Kicker.

    The 32-year-old tore his thigh muscle in Bayern's Champions League game at Dinamo Zagreb last week, on just his second appearance after nearly nine months out with an ankle injury.

    Russian-born Australian tennis player Arina Rodionova faces the biggest day of her life with a twist on Saturday as she attempts to win a wildcard to the Australian Open in the morning before tying the knot in the afternoon.

    Rodionova has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open play-offs which could see her win a spot in the main draw for January's first Grand Slam of the year.

    The 26-year-old had been scheduled to play Storm Sanders in the afternoon, which clashed with her wedding to Australian Rules football player Ty Vickery at 16:00 local time.

    But tournament organisers and her opponent have agreed to move the match to the morning.
