Guardian writer David Conn has also been speaking on BBC Radio 5 live.

"I just don’t see how Fifa's presidential elections in February can have the credibility it needs now. The organisation is in such scandalised chaos.

"Michel Platini was the outright favourite to take over from him, but the list of candidates that we have now is a bit of a motley crew."

Football writer Keir Radnedge has been giving his reaction to today's big news.

"Often the problem with all these individual sporting bodies is that they do not have the power to go into people's bank accounts and the like - they are dependent on judicial forces.

"But the great thing about what's happened with Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini at Fifa is that the Swiss authorities have got involved.

"Only after the Swiss put Blatter under formal criminal investigation did the ethics committee come in and say: Yes there must be a case to answer."

“Fifa has a reform process in place. With all those investigations ongoing, it’s difficult to see how the organisation will move on.

"A lot of officials inside the organisation will hope these bans are some sort of cathartic moment, but those ghosts from the past will continue to haunt them.”

Bonita Mersiades was the head of communications for Australia's failed bid for the 2022 World Cup - she has previously called the vote for those hosting rights a "busted flush"... and she's been giving her reaction to today's news.

"Anyone who has been in power too long becomes inured to the difference between good and bad. Sepp Blatter is typical to the sort of structure that has been build around Fifa.

"The US attorney general has said there is a whole way 'Fifa way' doing business, and Blatter has been at the very top for 35 to 40 years.

"As to what the future holds for him and Michel Platini, a lot depends on what the Swiss government is actually going to do, and also on what more is to come from the US attorney general, because she has made it clear there will be more arrests."

Michel Platini boycotted his hearing in Zurich on Friday in protest, claiming a decision already appeared to have been made.

His lawyers attended, but it looks as though the Frenchman is preparing to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

As for Sepp Blatter, he is planning to hold a news conference at 1000 GMT, when we will find out what he plans to do.

He has already announced he would not be seeking a fifth term as Fifa president but is unlikely to accept the ruling of the ethics investigators.

Whatever happens, they will find it hard to recover from the damage to their reputations.

More from Professor Mark Pieth, anti-corruption expert, and former chairman of Fifa's Independent Governance Committee, on 5 live Breakfast:

"At first, people thought the Ethics Committee was a paper tiger. They've debarred close to 40 officials. I'd say it's quite a tough institution."

A decent first hour for England saw a fifty for both openers in a partnership worth 112 runs, and a far more encouraging performance from Alastair Cook and Alex Hales.

However, having made 56 Hales got out, leaving a swinging Paterson delivery that clipped the top of off-stump. It’s the third time he’s been bowled during these warm-ups and the ability to judge when to leave will be inevitably be called in to question.

What can’t be argued is his eye and timing – the nine boundaries Hales hit demonstrated power, precision but also patience as he waited for and put away the bad deliveries.

Cook on 79* and Nick Compton on 19* have build a partnership which has overtaken South Africa A’s 136. 149-1 after 41 overs.

A reminder of the key points of the Fifa statement announcing the bans.

"The proceedings against Mr Blatter primarily related to a payment of CHF 2,000,000 transferred in February 2011 from Fifa to Mr Platini.

"Mr Blatter, in his position as president of Fifa, authorised the payment to Mr Platini which had no legal basis in the written agreement signed between both officials on 25 August 1999.

"Neither in his written statement nor in his personal hearing was Mr Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this payment.

"His assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber...
