    American shot-putter Adam Nelson was awarded a retrospective Olympic gold when the Ukrainian athlete that finished ahead of him at the 2004 Games was banned for doping. But he had to wait nine years to get his hands on the medal.

    When he did receive it, there was no podium, no national anthem playing in the background and no crowd cheering. Instead, Nelson was handed his gold by a US Olympic official while sat at a dining table in the food court of Atlanta airport.

    "I pulled my medal out and he pulled his medal out," recalled Nelson in an interview with the BBC World Service's Ade Adedoyin. "I jokingly said at least I got some fries with this."

    Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, external are reporting Fernando Torres' agent saying that the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker has "eight offers on the table" for next season. The 31-year-old's Atletico Madrid contract expires in the summer.

    Could this be the signing that seals a lucrative Premier League spot for Championship pace-setters Middlesbrough?

    Italian site Tuttomercatoweb report that Boro, external are working on a deal for Southampton's Gaston Ramirez, who has fallen well out of favour after signing for the Saints for £12m from Bologna in 2012.

    They face competition though from Bologna themselves and Swansea apparently.

    West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has dismissed speculation that the Hammers may try and sign Daniel Sturridge from Liverpool as "paper talk".

    Sturridge, 26, has scored 44 goals in 73 games for Liverpool but has managed only 21 appearances since August 2014 for the club after a succession of injuries.

    The Brentwood Gazette reported Tuesday , externalthat the Hammers were going to test Liverpool's patience with the striker's on-going issues by tabling an £18m bid.

    "I am not talking about who we want - Daniel Sturridge is a big player and a big name - but that is only paper talk," said Bilic.

    But when it was put to Bilic that Sturridge may become available, the West Ham boss replied: "What if? I would take Lionel Messi also, but it is only an 'if' so there is nothing in it."

    Britain's Jessica Ennis-Hill says she would still have doubts about Russian athletes at the 2016 Olympics even if the country convinces athletics organisations it should be allowed to compete in Rio.

    Russia is banned from athletics after accusations of widespread doping.

    Olympic and world heptathlon champion Ennis-Hill wants "drastic measures" in place if Russia is cleared to compete.

    But she added: "I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't look at Russian athletes and think 'is everything 100% OK?'"

    By the sounds of it, Newcastle United are playing hard-ball as this month comes to an end.

    After reports earlier today that they are refusing to increase any bid for Spurs winger Andros Townsend beyond £10m, the Daily Telegraph add, external that they are concerned that their interest is being used to flush out other Premier League bids for West Brom striker Saido Berahino.

    Newcastle believe that it might take a bid of £24m to secure the 22-year-old - more than they want to pay.

    It's a movie about West Ham hooligans.

    Presumably he is on his way to Upton Park. It has been reported in the last few days that the Hammers want to take the 28-year-old on loan., external

    Opener Alex Hales is in a "good place" despite mounting pressure to prove he deserves his Test spot, according to England and Nottinghamshire team-mate James Taylor.

    Hales, 27, has opened the batting on the tour to South Africa, but averages just 20 from six Test innings. He scored 60 in the drawn second Test but has only managed more than 20 on one other occasion. 

    "He obviously hasn't scored as many runs as he wanted," Taylor said. "But I think he is actually in a really good place. I know him well and I know when he is down and when he is on a high.

    The fourth Test in Centurion gets under way on Friday.

    Liverpool and Arsenal were reportedly considering activating Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams £15m release clause a week ago.

    Too slow.

    The 21-year-old - with 10 goals in 23 appearances this season - has today signed a contract extension with the Basque side, raising his release clause to £38m.

    Bilbao may well accept less than that. But probably not as low as £15m.

    BBC Newcastle's Nick Barnes: Vito Mannone is expected to return to the starting line up against Bournemouth on Saturday after Sam Allardyce confirmed the Italian is the first choice Sunderland goalkeeper following the departure of Costel Pantilimon.

    "Vito’s number one. I wanted to put Jordan Pickford in to play against Tottenham because, on the back of his game against Arsenal, I didn't want him to wait too long."

    Allardyce also says he would like to sign a third keeper and is still hoping to bring two more players to the club before the end of the transfer window.

    Could three-time European champions Toulon really up sticks from France and join the English Premiership?

    According to their outspoken owner Mourad Boudjellal they could.

    "If this is not possible the next season, maybe the one after that," he told l'Equipe.

    "For them [the English], besides a big first, it would be a huge added value. And I'm serious in my approach.”

    Boudjellal has written to the Premiership about his plan. It told the Daily Telegraph, external that it will give it "due consideration", before potentially approaching the Rugby Football Union and their French counterparts about any move.
