• In eight previous League Cup semi-final first-leg victories, only once have Liverpool not progressed to the final. Middlesbrough beat them 2-0 in the return leg in 1997-98 after losing 2-1 at Anfield in the first leg.
• Stoke have played Liverpool six times in the League Cup, drawing one and losing five.

• Of the teams remaining in the competition, Stoke have scored the fewest goals in this season's League Cup (five).

Stoke boss Mark Hughes: "We are going to really push for it. You always remember cup finals and semi-finals because of the excitement and the atmosphere and we want to make it a night to remember.

"Hopefully come 10pm on Tuesday we will be in the final of this competition for the first time in 40-odd years, and I will be reminding the players of that before kick-off."

Coach gives players a 'concentration' book

Borussia Dortmund are struggling to hang on to Bayern Munich’s coattails – but under new boss Thomas Tuchel they’re much nearer to the German leaders than they were last season.

Dortmund are second – albeit eight points behind Bayern – with midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan recently praising some of the new boss’s techniques.

Mkhitaryan revealed that Tuchel had given him a book about concentration techniques in tennis and how it had helped him improve.

“I got a book too!” Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels told BBC Radio 5 live’s European Football Show. “It was from a coach’s perspective but for a captain sometimes it is pretty similar about handling a team. It was very interesting."

'Impossible' to share - West Ham

West Ham say it would be "impossible" to share their new Olympic Stadium ground with another Premier League club without their agreement.

Stadium bosses London Legacy Development Corporation told a tribunal they would be open to discussions with Tottenham and Chelsea, who are redeveloping their grounds.

But West Ham said they take "priority".

Monday's hearing, much of which was in private, centred on whether details of West Ham's deal should be made public.

Jurgen Klopp might have moved on to pastures new, but it has not stopped his former Borussia Dortmund players from cheering on their old boss.

In an interview broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live’s European Football Show on Monday, Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels said he hopes Klopp can bring as much success to Liverpool as he did to the German side.

“Everyone on our team who played under him is trying to watch Liverpool games and is feeling with them because everyone had a special connection with him,” says the Germany defender.

“He should know and I think he does know that we have our fingers crossed for him.”

Asked for his thoughts ahead of his quarter-final meeting with Andy Murray tomorrow, eighth seed David Ferrer said: "With Andy, it’s going to be tough. He’s playing really good tennis,

"He has improved his game, he is playing more aggressive and has improved his forehand.

"So I will need to have a good day and play aggressive. It is possible it will be a long match. I will try to do my best."

Not exactly edge-of-the-seat stuff. Let's hope the match will be more entertaining.

Liverpool Ladies have "reluctantly" accepted a bid from Arsenal Ladies for Asisat Oshoala.

A statement issued by Liverpool read: "After the Gunners activated a clause in the Nigerian international’s contract, the striker will now discuss personal terms with Pedro Martinez Losa’s side."

Oshoala was the BBC's Women's Footballer of the Year in 2015.

Van Gaal storms out: Two days before Christmas Van Gaal walks out of a press conference after becoming annoyed about speculation regarding his future. Rumours had suggested the Dutchman was about to be sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Fat jibe: As he leaves a press conference, Van Gaal, who had been defending Wayne Rooney's form, turned to a reporter and said: "You too. Fat man. There."

On the brink: United supporters once again vent their anger towards Van Gaal after the 1-0 defeat against Southampton - leading to press speculation that he offered to quit.

Misfiring United flop at Gunners: Arsenal score three goals in the opening 20 minutes to sweep Manchester United aside at the Emirates in October. The defeat ended a run of four consecutive victories for Van Gaal's side.

League Cup KO: Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young all missed penalties as United were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough at Old Trafford.

European getaway: Van Gaal's side book their Champions League ticket with a 7-1 aggregate victory over FC Bruges. Captain Wayne Rooney ends his goal drought with a hat-trick in his side's 4-0 win in Belgium.

De Gea U-turn: Goalkeeper David De Gea puts pen to paper on a new four-year deal at Old Trafford in September to end speculation surrounding his future.

Liverpool double: Wayne Rooney scores the only goal as United complete a league double over their fierce rivals with victory in January.But with a defeat at home to Southampton to follow it proved to be something of a false dawn.  

Victory for England

Alastair Cook's England may have crumbled in South Africa, but there were no such problems for England’s visually impaired team, who have beaten Australia by 150 runs in the 3rd ODI in Adelaide.

The victory means they regain the Ashes with two games to spare. Captain Matt Dean scored 101.

Gervinho heads East

AS Roma's Ivorian striker Gervinho has moved to the Chinese Super League, joining Hebei China Fortune FC.

The Ivory Coast international, twice voted his country's footballer of the year, moved from Arsenal to Roma in 2013 after two seasons in England, during which he scored nine Premier League goals.

The 28-year-old had scored 17 times in 71 Serie A appearances for the Italian club.

Arrest over £10m loan

A 45-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the use of a £10.25m loan given by Northampton Borough Council to Northampton Town Football Club.

Police are investigating "alleged financial irregularities" in relation to the loan, which was designed to help the club develop its Sixfields Stadium.

The man was arrested on Monday morning and has been released on bail.

Det Ch Insp Paul Spicer said it was a "very complex investigation".

Former Burnley and England striker dies

Some sad news to report. Former Burnley and England striker Ray Pointer has died at the age of 79.

Born in Northumberland in 1936, Pointer joined Burnley in 1955 and went on to become the club's' second-highest scorer of all time.

Pointer, an integral part of the Clarets' title-winning side in 1960, made a total of 270 appearances for Burnley and scored 132 goals, which was only bettered by George Beel's 178.

Spells at Bury, Coventry and Portsmouth followed before he finished his playing career at Waterlooville. He was capped three times by England, scoring twice.

Tello leaves Barca

Barcelona forward Cristian Tello has joined Fiorentina on loan until June.

The 24-year-old Tello, who was loaned to Portuguese club Porto last season, made his Barca debut in 2011 and scored 20 goals in 86 appearances for the club.

"Thank you Fiorentina for the trust and for giving me the opportunity to play in the most beautiful city in Italy. I will not disappoint you," Spaniard Tello said on Twitter.

'Special atmosphere'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "I've heard about the special atmosphere at Anfield in semi-finals and I am really looking forward to it.

"Let's take the whole power of LFC and take it to the final.

"Reaching a final is great, but at the end it is only memorable when you win it and that is what you have to do.

"You should not waste the opportunity of winning something and I know for the players it is really important - they really want to go to the final."

Arsenal to sign 17-year-old midfielder

The Evening Standard is reporting that Arsenal are on the verge of signing Nigerian 17-year-old Kelechi Nwakali.

The midfielder helped Nigeria win the Under-17 World Cup last year and, according to his brother, is set to join the Gunners.
