Geoffrey Boycott's hopes of rejoining the Yorkshire board appear to have suffered a setback after members' committee chairman Stephen Mann ruled out support for his nomination.

Former Yorkshire and England opener Boycott is one of four candidates standing for election.

"The committee members are speaking with club members all the time, and the feedback we've been getting is that members aren't in favour of Geoffrey," said Mann.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli's suspension from Thursday's Europa League match against Borussia Dortmund could prove to be a blessing in disguise for the teenager, according to his boss.

During a stellar season, Alli has suffered knee and ankle injuries, however but his suspension from the round of 16 first-leg game in Germany gives him the chance to rest before Spurs play bottom club Aston Villa on Sunday.

"He is an incredible athlete, yes. But he is not a machine. He has had problems with his ankle and knee," said Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Maria Sharapova's former coach Jeff Tarango has been talking to BBC Scotland this morning and has said some interesting stuff.

“It is a little bit questionable to me that they are banning 20 athletes around the world for this one drug (meldonium). Is that they can’t get the other drugs? Is that what they are saying?” said Tarango.

"I think her personal physician, her agent, her coach, her physical trainer and chef should all be telling her when things change on the list, especially when they know she has been taking it for 10 years. It hasn’t been a secret.”

“The players that I coach now, I go through their tennis bags once every other week. I feel it is my responsibility to report to the parents what the juniors have their tennis bags. That is the responsibility I have.  When Maria started with me, she was reluctant to even take an aspirin.”

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren returned to work today but his future at the club remains in doubt.

McClaren arrived at the club's Darsley Park training headquarters early, ready to put his players through their paces as usual at 10:30 GMT.

There was a brief flurry of excitement among the gathered media when his car left again at around 09:00, but it emerged that it was his driver and not the 54-year-old who was behind the wheel.

The Press Association understands that McClaren is treating the day as business as usual, but that a decision on his future is likely to be made within the next 48 hours.

    Maria Sharapova latest

Russian Tennis Federation president Shamil Tarpishchev has called the Sharapova drug test scandal "nonsense" and said he thinks she will still play at this year's Olympics.

"The sportsmen take what they are given by the physiotherapists and by the doctors," he told the TASS news agency.

"I think Sharapova will play at the Olympics. However, we will need to see how this will develop."
