"With great sadness, the KNVB Thursday learned of the death of Johan Cruyff. Words are hardly to be found for this huge loss," read a statement from the Dutch Football Association.
"Johan Cruyff died in Barcelona on Thursday at the age of 68 in front of his family, to whom go our thoughts at this time. The greatest Dutch footballer of all time and one of the world's best ever, even while seriously ill. Cruyff was born on 25 April 1947 in Amsterdam and played 48 times for the Dutch national team, scoring 33 goals.
"Our condolences go to his wife, family, friends and the entire football world at home and abroad. We wish everyone a lot of strength in this difficult time."

Celebrities and former players remember Johan Cruyff's memorable performance during the 1974 World Cup, as he led the Netherlands to their first ever final.

Former Netherlands, Ajax and Barcelona winger Johan Cruyff is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all-time.
He was a three-time Ballon d'Or winner and also won three consecutive European Cups as a player with Ajax.
He helped his country reach the World Cup final in 1974, where they lost to West Germany.
As a manager he led Barcelona to their first European Cup win in 1992 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1989.
They also won four consecutive La Liga titles from 1990-91 to 1993-94.

Just last month, Johan Cruyff said he was "2-0 up in a match" against lung cancer.
The three-time Ballon d'Or winner was told of his illness in October.
"The results have been very positive," he said. "Thanks to the excellent work of the doctors, the affection of the people and my positive mentality.
"Right now, I have the feeling that I am 2-0 up in the first half of a match that has not finished yet," he added. "But I am sure I will end up winning."
