David Cowlishaw, The Wizards of Drivel Podcast:  "Given our recent defensive problems, the signing of a Dutch international centre-half will be welcomed by most Stoke fans.

"Bruno Martins Indi has good pedigree, and has been linked with the likes of Liverpool in the past. Most fans would prefer a permanent deal rather than a loan, but beggars can’t be choosers at this stage.

"It will be interesting to see what happens to our German centre-half Phillip Wollscheid, a good defender but someone who divides the opinions of Stokies. It looks like he could very well be off when the deal for Martins Indi goes through."

Last Friday Jose Mourinho said there would be no need for helicopters to hover over Manchester United's training ground - and it appears the Portuguese will be as good as his word.

Of the eight players he decided were surplus to his first-team requirements following the club's tour of China, seven have left, either on permanent deals or loans.

The only one to remain is Bastian Schweinsteiger, who reiterated on Tuesday that he would be staying at Old Trafford.

So, barring a late deal involving someone like Marcos Rojo, that would create space for a replacement defender, or a loan move for one of his younger players, it seems Mourinho's squad will remain as it is.

  3. Do players like windows?published at 10:53 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

    Trevor Sinclair
Former England winger speaks to BBC Sport

For me personally I like transfer windows.

You either get your agent and say "I want to be out by deadline day" and if you're not out by then, you know you can get your head down, work hard, keep your professionalism and force your way into the team or assess for a few months down the line.

You want to be private, you don't want to feel like your agent is touting you to every club as it becomes a laughing stock. It's a tricky business but I think it's better having a deadline day rather than transfers all year long.

As of 08:30 BST this morning, Premier League clubs’ total gross spending stood at £1.005bn, according to Deloitte’s Sports Business Group. Premier League clubs’ net spending stood at £527m.

It's the first time Premier League clubs have spent more than £1bn in a single transfer window.

At the same stage last year, gross Premier League spending was £780m, and net spending £385m. Massive increase.

Liverpool signed goalkeeper Alex Manninger in this transfer window. Almost forgot about that one...

Jack Lusby of thisisanfield.com: "It doesn’t promise to be an enthralling deadline day for Liverpool supporters, as with Loris Karius, Alex Manninger, Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip, Marko Grujic, Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane already signed, Jurgen Klopp will be focused almost exclusively on outgoings.

"There should be a controversial loan departure for fan favourite Mamadou Sakho, while Mario Balotelli, Tiago Ilori, Luis Alberto, Lazar Markovic and Andre Wisdom are all expected to leave.

"Unfortunately, there is a clear demand for both a new left-back and strengthening in the defensive midfield role, but it seems that Klopp is content with his current options, and that six-strong group - plus some youngsters leaving on loan - are likely to be the where he busies himself until 11pm."

Mario Balotelli is expected to complete a loan move from Liverpool to Nice before the transfer deadline.

The 26-year-old has scored just four goals in 28 appearances since joining Liverpool from AC Milan in a £16m deal in August 2014.

He had a disappointing spell back on loan at AC Milan last season and has also held talks with Swiss side FC Sion.

Manchester City were still coughing up a serious chunk of Emmanuel Adebayor's money when he'd been gone out of the door a couple of years. That's why it's essential clubs get their recruitment right and stick within the framework the club has financially built otherwise they can get into serious trouble very quickly.
