  1. 'Ugo was a beast, colossal'published at 09:29 British Summer Time 21 April 2017

    Ugo Ehiogu dies

He was a very unassuming, quiet and gentle soul. On the pitch he was a beast - colossal. His first tackle was in a Villa match at Witney Town and ex-Villa coach Gordon Cowans said to former manager Ron Atkinson, "Did you see that?".

He cost Villa £40,000, paid to West Brom. His first game I remember, against Norwich he had a shocker - losing 3-2. The next nine years he was a tremendous centre-back alongside Gareth Southgate.

He was unlucky with injuries - only four caps for England. Everybody at Villa would be amazed Ugo has succumbed at the age of 44.

He was always calm and reassuring.

He was not too vocal, but spoke when he needed to speak. He was a completely dedicated footabller. He loved the game. He got into coaching and coached at a younger level. What I know is that he was really respected at Tottenham.

It was a pleasure to play with him [at Boro]. Ugo suffered from injuries. He was right up there. Had he had more game time he would have added to his caps. He was the ultimate professional and someone I really enjoyed playing with.
