Jose Mourinho has confirmed, via the club's official website, external, that Michael Carrick will miss Manchester United's Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The club captain was also ruled out of the Reds' 4-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini also missed the trip to Russia after picking up injuries in the 1-0 victory over Southampton last weekend.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner: “This is the first time we meet an opponent with this quality. It’s the next step & we are excited to see if we can make the step.

"We will have the same group with us from Burnley. No new injuries and no-one has returned from their rehabilitation.

"Our one small advantage against Tottenham is our supporters. They have to be behind us from the first whistle.

“I think our players have adapted to the Premier League & they have shown they are capable. We have deserved all nine points."

Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield manager David Wagner: “We want to play against these sides; we will play Tottenham at the John Smith Stadium and we are looking forward to it.

“We want to pull them down to our level on Saturday and then neutralise their offensive abilities.

“It’s important that we play for three points against Spurs; we will try everything to do that.

"We have to know everything about Spurs and then give our players the best ideas on how to hurt them."

Southampton

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says defender Virgil van Dijk is edging closer to a start in the Premier League.

The Dutchman requested a transfer to Liverpool in the summer and is yet to start for the Saints this season.

Pellegrino also hailed the impact of Shane Long but says "the onus is on everyone in the team to improve in the final third".

Southampton

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says Stoke City will be a tough test, but was buoyed by the second-half showing against Manchester United.

The Saints pushed Jose Mourinho's side close but ended up losing narrowly 1-0.

"We have been working well this week. Every single game is an opportunity to show how we are. We will do our best to win."

Michael Atkins: This has to be the worst England squad ever. Why is Kane being spoken of alongside Ronaldo and Messi? Not that good.

Carl Collen: Options limited but without Lallana our midfield is desperately short of creativity. Sooner Harry Winks progresses the better.

Shamim Miah: Why has Southgate chosen 4 goalkeepers for two games I don't get that.

Sean Guy: Decent squad but time to let Hart go, Forster and Butland are the future. Hart has been found out - Kompany made him look good.

So, there were recalls for Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph and Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who replaces Tom Heaton.

Delph’s last cap came against Spain in November 2015.

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire retains his place following his call-up for the matches against Malta and Slovakia earlier this month.

"Sampson has been a great part of that momentum and it's a great shame that the focus has been taken off that.

"The women's game has been growing and it's a shame this has overshadowed that."

England manager Gareth Southgate: "Every country is the same, we live on an island. You are dealing with young sportsman who need time to switch off. They are then goaded and aware of protecting themselves.

"We have not got time for socialising next week so I do not see it as a problem. There is a massive spotlight on us all the time so if we have down time, we need to manage it carefully.

"Young people have to relax at some point but you have the responsibility of being a sportsman. If is not natural for any sports person to let their hair down but they have to be careful. Everyone has a camera phone and can lob it onto the internet. It was easier in my time."

England manager Gareth Southgate on behaviour issues across several sports: "We look very carefully on when we might give players free time.

"The most important thing is the commitment of players and them understanding what our guidelines are.

"I prefer to give people trust and see how it plays out."

England manager Gareth Southgate on Jamie Vardy: "Heneeds an injection and it will rule him out of our matches. He has not been training and he has been playing with lots of pain.

"It's not ideal from our point of view. We have a very high level of injuries but we have still got some good quality in that squad.

On Fifa world rankings: "The ranking is a good guide but it is not the be all and end all if we were ranked seventh or eighth in the world at the moment.

"We are an improving team. Getting continuity of selection would help that but we have things we still need to do."

England manager Gareth Southgate: "It is great we talk about Harry Kane under the company of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a different player, Harry is an out and out number nine, they are attacking forwards.

"I don't know a better finisher at the moment. He has a real hunger and wants to be the best player in the world. Some do not have the commitment with their lifestyle, but he does. You want players who want to be the best."

England manager Gareth Southgate: "Fabian Delph is a really good player. He was very important for a period under Roy Hodgson and he has had injury issues. He has forced himself back into the Manchester City side and played well. We have a situation in midfield where we need more competition and more alternative. He can provide that."

Gareth Southgate on Mark Sampson sacking: "That is not my place to comment on. Those decisions are made elsewhere."

Sampson was sacked as England women's manager following evidence of "inappropriate and unacceptable" behaviour with female players in a previous role.

England manager Gareth Southgate: "We have not heard anything at the moment from Fifa on Dele Alli. We run the risk of being a shambles because he might have to be withdrawn. We hope common sense prevails.

"We have given our side of events, Dele has given his, we have to see what happens next.

"I have had a good chat with Dele about different things, he is disappointed to miss football. He recognises the responsibility and we still have to qualify. We hope to have him available.

"Old people make mistakes, so young people will do. Hopefully something like that will not happen again."
