"All of these persons are now at home, in good health and obeying self-isolation measures," said a Valencia statement.

"Besides providing further information over the coming hours, the club reiterate our support for the health authorities and their social awareness campaigns, and emphasise to all of the population the importance of staying at home and continuing to follow the previously published hygiene and illness-prevention measures.

"Likewise, Valencia CF reiterate our confidence in the Spanish health system, and in the recommendations made by the Ministry of Health for cases of coronavirus infection such as these."

  3. Olympic torch relay goes behind closed doorspublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2020

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games flame handover in Athens next week will be done in an empty stadium amid the coronavirus outbreak, Greece's Olympic Committee said on Sunday.

Greece on Friday cancelled the remainder of the domestic Olympic torch relay through the country to avoid attracting crowds a day after the Tokyo Games flame was lit in ancient Olympia.

"The Hellenic Olympic Committee has decided that the handover ceremony for the "Tokyo 2020" Olympic Games, on Thursday, March 19, will take place at the Panathenaic Stadium behind closed doors," it said in a statement.

The central Athens stadium, site of the 1896 Games, usually attracts thousands of spectators to the handover ceremony to the next host city of winter and summer Games every two years. Greece had three fatalities from the disease and 228 confirmed cases by late Saturday.

  5. Detroit Pistons to self-isolate after forward tests positive for coronaviruspublished at 12:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2020

Detroit Pistons say all their players and staff will "self-isolate until further notice" after Christian Wood became the third player in the NBA to test positive for coronavirus.

Utah Jazz duo Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell both tested positive earlier in the week.

In a statement the Pistons said that Wood "will remain in isolation and under the care of team medical staff". The NBA was suspended on Thursday following Gobert's positive test.

All major sport in the United States has now been suspended amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Wood, who is in his first season with the Pistons, had experienced flu-like symptoms before scoring a career-best 32 points against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. The 24-year-old also scored 30 points in their 111-105 loss at the Jazz on 7 March, a game in which he was frequently paired up against Gobert.

  8. Van Dijk will be 'gutted' if fans miss titlepublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2020

    Van dijkImage source, Reuters

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk admits he would be "gutted" if the coronavirus crisis prevents fans from watching them win a league title for the first time in 30 years.

The Reds lead the Premier League by 25 points but football across the country is suspended until 3 April.

The prospect of playing matches without fans has been raised as one of a number of ways to complete the fixture list.

"No one wants to play games without the fans," said Van Dijk, 28. "If we won it in an empty stadium and the fans weren't there, I'd be gutted for them," the Dutch international told newspapers.

"Obviously, if there are no fans at Anfield, then it will be a bit of a blow. Until a decision is made on how we go on from here, then we just have to deal with it. But when it happens, we are still bringing the title to our fans, definitely."

  12. Footballers in England were treated like guinea pigs - Rooneypublished at 11:32 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2020

    Wayne RooneyImage source, Getty Images

Wayne Rooney says the government and football authorities have treated footballers as "guinea pigs" during the coronavirus outbreak.

Elite football in Britain has been suspended until at least 3 April, with the Premier League saying "conditions at the time" will determine its return.

"For players, staff and their families it has been a worrying week," he said. "One in which you felt a lack of leadership from the government and from the FA and Premier League."

Writing in his column in the Times, the former England captain said: "The rest of sport - tennis, Formula 1, rugby, golf, football in other countries - was closing down and we were being told to carry on.

"I think a lot of footballers were wondering, 'Is it something to do with money being involved in this?'. Why did we wait until Friday? Why did it take Mikel Arteta [Arsenal manager] to get ill for the game in England to do the right thing?

"After the emergency meeting, at last the right decision was made - until then it almost felt like footballers in England were being treated like guinea pigs. I know how I feel. If any of my family get infected through me because I've had to play when it's not safe, and they get seriously ill, I'd have to think hard about ever playing again. I would never forgive the authorities."

  13. 'I have tested positive for the coronavirus,' says post on Garay's Instagrampublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2020

A post on Ezequiel Garay's Instagram page suggests the Valencia and Argentina defender has tested positive for coronavirus.

"It is clear that I started 2020 badly," says the post. "I have tested positive for the coronavirus, I feel very well and now it only remains to pay attention to the health authorities, for now to be isolated."
