  3. Aberdeen chairman calls for claritypublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has urged the football authorities to "put a stake in the ground" this week with regards the resumption of the Scottish game.

Football in the country has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus crisis, with no firm date for it to start back.

The pandemic has had financial implications and the Dons chief fears a £5 million shortfall for the club if there is no more income from football over the next few months.

He told STV: "It would be good to get some clarity from UEFA or the authorities as to where we go from here. I think everybody is in a difficult position.

"In an ideal world, with sporting integrity, we would play all the games. That's what everybody wants. The reality is, as the days and weeks go on that becomes really, really difficult."

  4. Root expecting talks over pay cutspublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England captain Joe Root expects talks over a temporary pay cut for the country’s top cricketers to take place soon as the sport continues to face up to the impact of a heavily disrupted season.

The entire campaign is postponed until at least 28 May due to the ongoing spread of coronavirus, with the likelihood of further delays, and Root, speaking to journalists from lockdown in Sheffield via the Zoom videoconferencing service, says: "I’m sure at some point in the coming weeks there will be a discussion.

"I’m also aware they are discussions that will take place between the Professional Cricketers’ Association and the ECB. That’s not my area of expertise.

“I’ve been in touch with the guys at Yorkshire but not a lot of the talk has been around money, to be honest. It’s been about trying to keep each other up, conversations flowing, have a bit of fun."

The Sunday Times reported yesterday, external that leading England players such as Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler would take £200,000 pay cuts.

Root will be a guest on tonight's Tuffers and Vaughan programme on BBC Radio 5 live from 20:00 BST.

  5. WSL clubs want season finished - Hope Powellpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

Brighton Women's manager Hope Powell says all players and coaches "want the Women's Super League season to finish" but the health and safety of everyone involved is "absolutely paramount".

"We don't have a crystal ball so nobody knows how long it is going to last and when the season can resume," said Powell. "I think everybody from an athlete and coach perspective, of course, wants the season to finish.

"We need to leave it for those decision-makers who are in constant contact with medical advisors. They will make the best decision and base that on people's health and wellbeing and safety, I am sure."

Brighton defender Felicity Gibbons said all clubs would have to "accept whatever the outcome is" but suggested finishing the season "would probably be the most fair outcome".

"There's a whole bigger picture at the moment and health and safety is more important than football," she added.

Newcastle have become the first Premier League club to place their non-playing staff on temporary leave because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Managing director Lee Charnley emailed club employees on Monday to say the decision was taken to safeguard the future of the club.

Staff, including those from the club's academy and foundation charity, have been instructed to apply for the government’s job retention scheme.

The chancellor Rishi Sunak announced earlier this month that workers can claim 80% of their wages up to £2,500 a month.

  8. England hockey extends suspension to 30 Junepublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

England Hockey has extended the suspension of all hockey activity until 30 June.

Hockey was originally suspended until 15 April but a statement on Monday said: "With the continuing social restrictions caused by Covid-19, this extension is pragmatic in the circumstances and provides clarity for our clubs, players, officials and volunteers.

"We have asked that this national position is replicated at a local level by counties, leagues and independent hockey providers.

"It is hugely disappointing to curtail hockey activity in this way and there will be many league and cup competitions which will not now reach their natural conclusion."

  9. Finance expert's warning over not completing seasonpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

The Premier LeagueImage source, Getty Images

Premier League clubs could reach "crisis-talks stage" of redundancies and ripped-up contracts if they cannot complete the current season, football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson has warned.

The top-flight is currently postponed until 30 April due to the coronavirus pandemic but that suspension is likely to be extended.

"Football clubs don’t tend to plan long-term financially, and that’s why they are being found out a bit now," Dr Wilson told the Press Association. "You will see Premier League clubs becoming more and more stressed as this goes on, because they simply haven’t planned for that downturn in trade. And they should have.

"Too many clubs lead that hand-to-mouth existence. As soon as you see a problem, all of a sudden they are scrambling around because they have got no money coming in."

    BBC rugby union correspondent

The British and Irish Lions say there will be no "direct clashes" with the Tokyo Olympic Games next summer.

The rearranged Olympics will run from 23 July to 8 August, which overlaps with the Test series against the world champions South Africa.

However the Lions Tests are understood to be 6pm kick offs local time (17:00 BST), which is 1am in Tokyo.

"Fans should not miss out on any action," said Lions boss Ben Calveley."We are determined to play our part in what will be an extraordinary summer of sport."

The Irish Open, scheduled for late May, has become the latest European Tour event to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Rolex Series event - won last year by Spaniard Jon Rahm - was scheduled to take place at Mount Juliet from 28-31 May, with former US Open champion Graeme McDowell as tournament host.

The Northern Irishman said: "As important as the Irish Open is to all of us, everyone's health is our only concern.

"My thoughts are with everyone affected by the crisis and I hope everyone keeps safe and well during these difficult times."

I understand MPs have contacted the sports minister to ask for intervention regarding the expunged non-league seasons.

An open letter has been signed by 64 clubs - from steps three to seven in the men's non-league pyramid, as well as clubs from the respective women's leagues - which will be going to the FA imminently.

In the letter, clubs criticise the "inexplicable haste", "unacceptable" communication and "no consensus" over the decision.

  13. Hundred’s ticket window delayedpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

The England and Wales Cricket Board has delayed the next two windows for tickets sales for The Hundred, which were due to open on 2 April (subscribers to The Hundred) and 8 April (general sale).

There will be no cricket in the UK until at least 28 May because of coronavirus, and the ECB’s managing director Sanjay Patel said: “In the midst of an epidemic which is affecting the nation in unprecedented ways, it would be wholly inappropriate for us to promote and sell tickets to The Hundred.

“We appreciate this may cause some disappointment to fans and when it is appropriate to go back on sale, we will of course offer the same ticket offers and accessible pricing.

“Like the rest of the nation, we all hope that it is not far away before cricket returns to our screens, stadiums, parks and clubs.’’

  14. 2021 Lions Tests to go ahead as expectedpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

All three British and Irish Lions Tests against world champions South Africa will go ahead next summer, despite the rescheduling of the Tokyo Olympics.

The first match is on 24 July, the day after the Olympics begin, with the second on 31 July and the final Test on 7 August.

Lions managing director Ben Calveley said: “The priority right now has to be the safety and wellbeing of all those affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are determined to play our part in what will be an extraordinary summer of sport.

“There should not be any direct clashes with Lions matches and Olympic events, given the time difference between South Africa and Tokyo, so fans should not miss out on any action.

“We are expecting a fantastic series against the world champions.”

  15. London Stadium will be ready for footballpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

West Ham have been assured the London Stadium will be ‘configured for football’ even if there is a clash with other events this summer.

The London Stadium is due to host two Major League Baseball matches on 13 and 14 June and also the prestigious Anniversary Games athletics event on 4-5 July.

Although there are major doubts either event will take place given the coronavirus outbreak, if they do, it could create a problem if the Premier League season is extended into the summer as the stadium has to be changed, with seats used for football being removed.

It sparked fears the Hammers would have to play matches with an athletics track round the pitch, lengthening the distance even more than already exists.

However, after talks with Lyn Garner, chief executive of E20, the group that run the stadium, the Hammers have been assured that is not the case.

“Competitive matches take precedence over other activity at the Stadium,” said the Hammers in a statement.

“E20 recognise that the Concessionary Agreement contractually obliges them to move or postpone other events at the stadium to ensure our matches go ahead.

“We want to reassure our supporters that, as and when the Premier League resume the season, the London Stadium will be configured for football matches and not inappropriately set up for an athletics meeting or a concert.

"Our contract with the Stadium requires E20 to provide the Stadium configured for football if the football season is extended. It also requires them to work with UK Athletics and others to reschedule their meetings so that there is no clash with West Ham’s fixtures.”

West Ham say they will make ‘every effort’ to assist in the staging of other events but were not prepared to compromise first-team league matches.

  16. Walkden 'glad' to have new Olympics datepublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 30 March 2020

Three-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist Bianca Walkden says she is "glad" that a new date for Tokyo 2020 has been confirmed, with the Games starting on 23 July 2021.

"I’m glad it’s been confirmed so that we can plan and focus on our new training programme, moving forward.

"Prior to the announcement, I had already thought it would probably be during a similar time but in 2021, so it’s good to know so quickly.

"I’m just happy that it’s still going ahead, we as athletes need to remember that we’re lucky that the Games weren’t cancelled and were only postponed.

"Hopefully by then the World will have recovered from Covid-19 and be back to the way it was before.”

Spurs have held discussions with Haringey Council, the Greater London Authority and the NHS about making use of their 62,214-capacity arena.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: "As a club, we have always been clear about our commitment to the wider community – never has this been more important than it is now.

"We are immensely proud of the efforts of everybody involved in the fight against Covid-19 and see today as just the start of what we can do as a club to assist."
