    Judd Trump has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after his opening match win at the Championship League.

    "It’s all been a bit strange to be honest," he said. "It’s brilliant to have snooker back on TV and everyone involved has done an amazing job to sort off be the first sport back."

    Trump also talked about how he was tested on Sunday around 16:00 BST and they had to stay in their rooms until 11:30 today. The players had to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

    He added: "We are all on site here, not really a case of hanging out, I’ll probably go back to my room on my own and wait for my next match on my own.

    "I like watching TV and listening to music as well as watching some of the other games."

    World champion and world number one Judd Trump has made the ideal start in the opening match of the Championship League, beating David Grace 3-0 to top the group.

    Trump has further matches against Elliot Slessor and Daniel Wells to come but is sitting in a healthy position already.

    Chief Executive of the BHA, Nick Rust said: "I’m delighted to see the return of racing in Wales at Chepstow next month as ensuring that racing gets back up and running in all three nations of Britain has been a priority of the BHA in recent weeks as we look to maintain our nationwide footprint, and provide opportunities for trainers based in devolved administrations.

    "The focus of our plans is on returning safely and I believe the public can be reassured by the measures we have put in place. Our participants have made sure they understand all that will be asked of them when they attend a meeting. Their priority, like ours, is to ensure continued observance of social distancing rules and prevent the virus spreading.

    "I hope this is a vital first step towards a complete return for our industry in Wales, and we look forward to returning to race at Ffos Las, and Bangor-on-Dee later in 2020."

    Richard Fahey's Brian The Snail won the Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap by the narrowest of margins from Yousini.

    A promising sort as a youngster, he was bought by Godolphin having won both starts at two but has failed to reach the expected heights.

    Tony Hamilton was on board and he said: "He's a horse with a lot of ability, but he only ever does it every now and again.

    "His work at home is better than what he shows in the afternoon, but when he puts his best foot forward he's a nice horse.

    "Riding in the mask is not that nice, but we all know we've got to do it so we'll do it as long as we have to."

    Welsh courses and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) have announced racing will resume behind closed doors in Wales.

    "The first fixture is scheduled for Monday, 15 June at Chepstow racecourse," the statement read.

    "Initially, racing at Welsh courses will just be recommencing at Chepstow with no spectators able to attend.

    "Bangor-on-Dee will resume as part of the summer Jumps season which begins in July, and Ffos Las will reopen in October."

    Earlier on, Edraak was a comfortable winner of the third race of the day at Newcastle but his trainer (and owner) Mick Appleby was unable to see his horse win in person.

    Appleby is currently isolating having been to Sweden for a race meeting there but will have been cheering on the 16-1 shot from his Rutland home.

    Snooker also makes its return today with the Championship League event taking place in Milton Keynes.

    All eight players in action, including Judd Trump, as well as the 35 staff members on-site at the Marshall Arena have returned negative Covid-19 tests that took place over the weekend.

    Action gets under way from 15:00 BST on free-to-air ITV 4.

    Former champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa grabbed a winner at Newcastle as racing resumes in the UK.

    Art Power, trained by Tim Easterby, ran out a comfortable victor in the second division of the Betway Novices Stakes.

    The victory for the favourite made up for disappointment for the Brazilian in the previous race when Freedom Flyer refused to enter the starting stalls and was not allowed to run.

    Edraak takes victory in the first division of the Betway Novices Stakes at Newcastle.

    After close finishes in the day's opening two races, the 16-1 chance ridden by Ali Rawlinson and trained by Mick Appleby, showed an impressive turn of foot to win comfortably ahead of Blazing Hot and Bond's Boy

    There was drama at the start as the favourite Freedom Flyer refused to enter the starting gates and Ejtilaab also had to be withdrawn after becoming unsettled.

  14. Novices take centre stagepublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 1 June 2020

    Onto race three at Newcastle at 1410, which is the first division of the Betway Novices Stakes, run over six furlongs. The number of entries mean the race has been split into two divisions of 12 runners.

    Four of the 12 horses have raced a couple of times before but the rest are making their first competitive appearance.

    Here's the moment Zodiakos edged out stablemate Al Ozzdi to make history in the first British race since 17 March.

    The spectators would have loved it - had they been there of course - instead there's a photographer and a couple of course officials looking on from the finish line and a few faces in the main stand.

    Roger Fell, winning trainer of the first race had this to say after his horse Zodiakos won the opening race in Newcastle:

    “My instructions were to make it, to get on with it because he has one pace and he did that perfectly.

    “Lockdown has not been bad for us as we’re quite isolated, we’re not round lots of other people. A lot of the staff live on site so it’s quite easy.”

    "That has blown away the cobwebs,” Zodiakos's jockey Jimmy Sullivan told Sky Sports Racing afterwards.

    “It was hard work from about three and a half furlongs out but he galloped well and Roger had him spot on.

    “The ground is very hard and it played to his strengths at the end. Al Ozzdi got past me but in the last 100 yards my horse’s stamina kicked in.”
