What we need to do is pursue a dynasty, rather than pursuing a championship. Together, we must make sports enjoyable for seasons to come, building our roster and strategically positioning ourselves to be more resilient in the future. A sports dynasty isn't built by an individual, but rather by a collective of athletes, supporters, corporate brands, management, ownership, and the power of innovation. We must address climate action with a similar mentality to ensure that we can continue to love (and love to hate) the dynasties that make sports great.

When I was in my 20’s, I was involved in creating a parody Olympic bid for my city, Salla.

We wanted to show the world that climate change could turn even the coldest places into summer destinations. Our team made a video and clothing line and a website for ‘Salla 2032’ with the slogan ‘Warm heart, we have it. Warm place, coming soon.”

We were excited about it, and it gained a lot of international attention.

But in the end it didn’t work.

Nobody was ready to listen to that in the 2020s. And sure, Salla wasn’t that warm in 2032, and maybe that was a bit aggressive, but by the 2040s, we could’ve hosted it. We could host it now.

In 2026, I became the first Olympian from the Caribbean to compete in ski cross. It was brilliant, a huge thrill. I used to spend half my year training in France, and the other half in New Zealand. But starting in the mid 2020s, events were getting canceled more often than they were being held.

    Quote Message

We’d travel all the way to a competition site, and end up sitting in the hotel because the winds were too strong, or there was a snowstorm that was too harsh, or there just wasn’t enough snow at all because it was too warm.

    Quote Message

Eventually, by the 2030s, my sponsors starting pulling back their funding, because I wasn’t competing much and there just wasn’t as big a following on the ski competition circuit since cancelations were so common. I had to retire because of it.

    Quote Message

I’ve skied recreationally ever since, but only about once a year, because I have to go to one of the higher altitude mountains in Austria or Switzerland to get good snow, and it’s just too expensive.

  4. 'Engagement programmes should be encouraged'published at 20:33 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

A current and future challenge with regard to recycling and processing waste is the regional difference between the waste infrastructure and processing plants. This means sport clubs and stadiums have to adapt to what their locality can handle whilst another similar stadium in a different part of the country may be dealing with their recycling in a different manner.

    Quote Message

The new construction and redevelopment of venues, stadiums, arenas could benefit from a clear and useful grant scheme that promotes building in a sustainable manner, which often is not the cheapest.

    Quote Message

The roll out of photovoltaics (PV) panels could also be greatly increased with the adoption of a clear and useful capital grant scheme which would see a return on investment and an increase in green energy production. Virtually all south facing stadium roofs could be utilised in this manner.

    Quote Message

The link and association between the sports clubs and their fans in developing a more sustainable lifestyle can be enhanced. Engagement programmes which centre around the club setting an example and the fans joining in should be encouraged – see for example Pledgeball.

    Quote Message

Sports venues should be encouraged to adopt the BASIS certification scheme which is simple and useful framework that helps clubs progress their operations sustainably. The framework assists and supports clubs to progress, in an comprehensive and holistic manner, a way of working that embraces sustainable principles.

40 years ago I learned to play baseball on this field. For all of us kids locally, we used to come here every day and play. Now we have more hurricanes, each one worse than Tropical Storm Bret, and the field has been destroyed. The baseball field has been flattened, the stands destroyed, the fences blown away. I can't teach my kids to play here, the way I learned.

Something that worries me is the lack of effort from major corporations and organisations in sport who have an immense impact. With large capital and power these organizations could have immense impact in a very short period of time.

  7. A vision of the futurepublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

Future news from a warmer world

Sport 2050 was conceived and created with the ambition of making the abstract future impacts of climate change more real for people by looking at how it might impact on their everyday lives.

Sport - one of the most universally relatable areas of life across the globe that raises passions like no other - presents an ideal opportunity to do this.

The imagined scenarios as part of Sport 50 are not predictions; they are creatively imagined and for illustrative purposes only - but are based on both the science and collective thoughts of how sport might adapt:
