Paul Lambert expects Scotland to rise to the occasion in Friday's World Cup qualifier with England at Wembley.

Former Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk spoke to our reporter Kenny Crawford at the draw for the 2017 Women's European Championship in Rotterdam.

The former Netherlands international says, if the Scottish champions can secure third place in their Champions League group, that would be a satisfactory outcome.

“Third place I think would be a big achievement," Van Hooijdonk said.

"When the draw was made and you see yourself in the same group as Manchester City and Barcelona then you know it’s going to be an unbelievable task to qualify. That is not a problem, in my opinion, if that (qualifying from the group) doesn’t happen. But it would be great if Celtic could continue in Europe."

Van Hooijonk has been impressed with the start Brendan Rodgers has made to life as Celtic manager.

“I think he’s started really well," he said. "The way the team is playing, they are scoring a lot of goals, so it all looks good. 

"The game against Manchester City is still in the memory of many of us around the world. Everybody has seen the highlights or the live coverage of that game. 

"To see Celtic performing well against a team with so much quality and so much money was a fantastic job."

Former manager Craig Brown has urged Scotland to be confident of taking advantage of an English "wobble" at Wembley. 

Brown led Scotland to victory over a side including the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Alan Shearer on their last competitive game at the old Wembley Stadium in 1999. 

And he thinks the Scots can do likewise on Friday against a side with an interim manager, Gareth Southgate, in charge after the departure of Sam Allardyce.

"They have got to be brave and confident and not go down there with any feeling of inferiority, because England are on a wobble at the moment," he said of an England side who drew their last World Cup qualifier with Slovenia.

"They struggled in the last game they played and even the game they had with Big Sam, they weren't convincing at all. 

"So I think England are in a transitional period and they are not stable.

"I think it gives Scotland a great opportunity because we always rise to the occasion when we go to Wembley and I'm sure we will do that this time."

Partick Thistle midfielder Adam Barton is Premiership player of the month after an unbeaten October for his club.

"The whole country" needs Scotland to qualify for a major tournament again, says former Scotland midfielder Paul Lambert. 

The Scots last featured in a major finals at the World Cup in France in 1998 and Lambert says it's been "far too long".

"There's no way I thought that would've been our last tournament," he added. "We've got a chance going down there [against England at Wembley on Friday] and I guarantee their performance level will raise because of the atmosphere and the game they're playing in."

Liam Buchanan believes David Hopkin has played a big part in his strong start to the season - but wishes the Livingston boss would stop substituting him when he's on a hat-trick.

The 31-year-old striker has been named League One player of the month after scoring five goals in five games during October.

Buchanan, who joined Livi from Alloa Athletic this summer, has hit four doubles this season on his way to a total of 15 goals, but he has failed to complete three of those games.

"It's been great," he said of working under David Hopkin, who has also been named manager of the month. "And, if he stops taking me off when I'm on two goals, it'll be even better.

"He's one of the few managers that want to coach you as well, so you're always learning under him.

"You're never too old to be learning and I think this year he's turned me into a better player so I can only keep going."

But it looks like Charlie Mulgrew has been brought in as cover in central defence rather than left-back, where Lee Wallace is favourite to deputise in the absence of Andrew Robertson and Kieran Tierney.

Remember Mulgrew can also play a holding role in midfield. Re-united with former Celtic team-mate Scott Brown?

Responding to suggestions from Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam that Gordon Strachan isn't picking the best players available for Scotland, Lambert said: "It's really difficult for any manager to pick a squad and try to keep everybody happy.

"It's well-nigh impossible. People have got to respect Gordon's decision and he's picked who he thinks is the best squad.

"Charlie's playing well with Stoke at the minute and Gordon's got a difficult job picking a certain amount of guys to come in.

"So, whatever team Gordon picks on that night, you hope the whole country gets behind the team."
