  1. Goodbye

So we will leave it there for the live text commentary on a fantastic night for Amir Khan. He dominated against durable American Devon Alexander on his way to a wide points victory. Next year may well bring Khan that fight with Floyd Mayweather that he so desperately craves.

The Khan v Alexander report is live on our boxing pages so thank you for your comments and we will see you soon. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Bye for now.

  2. 'I would be too skilful for Mayweather'

    Amir Khan

More from Amir Khan: "Floyd Mayweather is the ideal fight for me. I think he is the best pound-for-pound boxer and it would be a game of chess, but against Mayweather I would be too skilful. I have the skill and movement to beat him.

"I feel better now than I did when I was 25. I'm dedicated to the sport and I know there's a few years left in me. I'm going to try and force that fight with Floyd Mayweather. He will not be able to hurt me. He does not have the skill for me."

  3. Post update

Former undisputed heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis ‏on Twitter: I would love to see Mayweather v Khan or Mayweather v Pacquiao in May. Best case scenario: Mayweather v Khan in May and if FM wins then Mayweather v Pacquiao in September as Grand Finale.

  4. Get involved on #bbcboxing

Rick Power: Not only has Khan taken Alexander to school but he's passed the exam and is heading towards a graduation against Mayweather.

  5. Boxer reaction - Devon Alexander

    Devon Alexander

Beaten fighter Devon Alexander says: "I don't want to make any excuses. He was the better man and I wasn't good enough tonight. I was supposed to follow the game plan, but this is a loss and no one wants to lose."

  6. 'I want my chance at Mayweather'

Asked if he deserves a fight with Floyd Mayweather, Amir Khan replies: "I really believe I've earned my shot against the best boxer in the world and that's Floyd Mayweather. We will come back here and take the belt. I want my chance."

  7. Boxer reaction - Amir Khan

A very happy Amir Khan says: "I trained very hard for this fight. I knew I had to make a statement tonight. It was against a tough, very skilful guy, but it was one of my best performances.

"I'm the best boxer and have the quickest hands in the world. I've just turned 28 and I'm getting better and getting quicker, I just had to become smarter.

"It's in my blood to fight, but today I was able to reset myself. I've got the best jab in the business."

  8. KHAN WINS BY UNANIMOUS DECISION

    Amir Khan

Scores of 119-109, 118-110, 120-108. One judge says Khan won all 12 rounds in Las Vegas. The other two judges give him the victory by 10 and eight-round margins.

  9. Post update

Alexander should be throwing everything at Amir Khan in the last, but instead tries to pick him off with single punches and it is a strange tactic for a man surely miles behind on the scorecards.

At no stage is Khan in trouble in the last, but a durable Alexander, despite taking some punishment, hears the final bell and deserves a lot of credit for that. We go to the judges' scorecards.

  10. Post update

"Why you letting him do what he wants to do?" asks a pretty unsupportive Alexander corner.

Amir Khan and Devon Alexander in round six

He is trying, but quite simply he has not been good enough. Alexander is not having much success with the jab and Khan, faster and more intelligent, just has to avoid a knockout in the last to win this one.

  11. Post update

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who wants Khan to fight Kell Brook next, writes on Twitter: Amir has blistering hand speed and is always wide open in exchanges - always great to watch.

  12. Post update

Is it enough to get him a fight with Floyd Mayweather? Maybe? Maybe not. But Khan has produced a highly professional performance. Devon Alexander needs one magic punch. If it goes the distance than the Briton's arm will be the one raised.

More from Khan's trainer Virgil Hunter: "He is having to come forward, but he's not effective when he does so."

  13. Post update

Devon Alexander's corner know their man has to do something special to win this. 'You have to turn this around' is the bit we can write from his corner after the ninth. Some quotes, we couldn't repeat.

Not the most eventful round of an entertaining contest, with Alexander reduced to huge, speculative rights looking for a knockout punch.

  14. Post update

Peter Fury, trainer of British heavyweight Tyson Fury on Twitter: Lovely boxing from Khan. Devon no answer to the speed and movement. Easy night's work.

  15. Post update

    Amir Khan

Full credit to the American, who may well have just got his first round on the board. He lands three right hooks with his best work of the contest, and also has success with the left.

The camera focuses on Amir Khan's dad, Shah Khan, who looks a bit worried. His son is still well ahead on points, but this round is a warning that the job is not finished just yet.

  16. Post update

It is a masterclass from Khan so far, surely one of the best performances of his career to date, in this his 33rd professional fight.

Khan is landing more, although Alexander tries to make a dent with some body punches. But it is another round for Khan. He looks relaxed, and in total control.

  17. Get involved on the BBC Sport Facebook page

The best British pound-for-pound boxer over the last 20 years?

Shaun McAllister: It's got to be Joe Calzaghe. And if he was to make a comeback he would still beat Carl Froch on points. He is still young enough to make this British fight of all fights. PS I love Carl the Lion Heart my second best hard and nails fighter in the last 20 years.

    Naseem Hamed

Stefan Domingo Lanigan-Macedo: For the 10-minute walk in against Kevin Kelly in his first fight in America, predicting to his face in the weigh in he would knock him out in the fourth and then knocking him out in the fourth. Prince Naseem will always be my favourite.

  18. Post update

A lovely left hook from Khan, quicker to the punch, rocks Alexander but the Brit can't capitalise against a durable opponent, who is taking a fair bit of punishment.

Amir Khan and Devon Alexander in round one

With 40 seconds of the round a left-right Khan combination also finds the face of the American. He is well behind on the scorecards, but still in there.

  19. 'You're beating him up'

The closest round of the contest so far, but did Alexander do enough to win it. I'm not sure. Khan is trying to avoid getting into a brawl and goes defensive as Alexander produces some of his best punches.

"You're beating him up, he won't be able to take this for a few more rounds," screams Khan's trainer Virgil Hunter.

  20. Post update

It is entertaining so far. But Khan is proving too good. However, it is an exciting contest, with a huge hook from Khan drawing gasps from the packed crowd at the MGM Grand.

All going to plan for the Englishman so far.

  21. Elsewhere in Vegas...

    Andy Lee

It has already been a sensational night for London-based Andy Lee, who has clinched the vacant WBO world middleweight title.

The 30-year-old, who represented Ireland at the 2004 European Championships, won the belt with a sixth-round stoppage victory against previously-unbeaten Russian Matt Korobov.

Lee has now won 34 of 36 fights, with 24 of those victories coming inside the distance.

  22. Post update

Alexander is already looking frustrated with a shake of the head in the third round as Khan's quickness is again causing the American problems. A perfect start for Khan, who has probably taken all three opening rounds. Quick, fast and hard from an excellent Khan so far.

  23. Get involved on the BBC Sport Facebook page

We asked who is the best pound-for-pound British boxer over the last 20 years. Here are some of your answers from the BBC Sport Facebook page.

Lee Ifans: Joe Calzaghe. His record speaks for itself.

    Lennox Lewis

Michael Williams: Hands down Lennox Lewis. Anyone who says Khan knows nothing about boxing.

Jamie Rossiter: Ricky Hatton and Carl Froch for excitement. Lennox Lewis and Joe Calzaghe for legacy. Difficult to pick just one.

  24. Post update

Amir Khan's trainer Virgil Hunter tells his man after the opening round 'don't get wild, stick to the plan'. It is an impressive start from the British boxer, who looks too quick for his opponent, with Alexander unable to get his jab working.

But then a right-hand from Alexander stings Khan, to remind him he might not have it all his own way.

  25. Khan keen to sparkle

    Fight Label
Image caption: Amir Khan's shorts feature white leather, silk and a 24-carat gold thread waistband

Not only does Amir Khan want to impress in the ring in Las Vegas, he wants to look the part inside and out of it as well - by wearing boxing's "most expensive shorts".

The shorts, made of white nappa leather, silk and featuring a waistband made of 24-carat gold thread, are reported to be worth at least £20,000. Sheffield company Fight Label, who made the shorts, said Khan "wanted extravagant and we've delivered".

Sophie Whittam, who designed the shorts, told BBC Radio 5 live: "I think it's possibly the most expensive shorts ever made.

"We worked closely with Amir's team. For around four to six weeks we've been working on designs and colours and obviously Amir and his family had a little bit of input, but at the end of the day it's what we think is going to look best. It is a very involved process."

  26. Post update

Amir Khan has already shown his quick hands with a powerful combination in the opening minute of the contest as he looks to unsettle his opponent.

That flourish is as good as the round gets. But the Brit, the more aggressive, has probably done enough to take the opener.

  27. Calzaghe backs Khan

Former super-middleweight world champion Joe Calzaghe on Twitter: Good to be back in Vegas. Looking forward to the big fight tonight I go for Khan points win.

Calzaghe, who won all 46 of his professional fights, defeated American Bernard Hopkins on a split decision in Las Vegas in April 2008.

  28. Post update

    And here we go...

  29. Brook waits for his chance

But where does Amir Khan go next if he wins today and does not get a bout with Floyd Mayweather?

Well, what about sharing the ring with Sheffield's unbeaten Kell Brook, the IBF welterweight champion. Brook certainly is keen.

    Kell Brook

He said: "Carl Froch's fight with George Groves at Wembley was massive. And this could be another packed Wembley fight in the summer.

"Khan has only had one fight at welterweight and doesn't deserve a fight with me - he doesn't deserve a shot. But everywhere I go people say 'when are you going to fight Amir Khan'. Forget egos, we should just sign the contract and make it happen. It's a fight everyone wants to see."

  30. Mayweather's curve-ball

The talk in the build-up has been that Amir Khan may fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, if the Brit beats Devon Alexander.

Well, Mayweather has thrown a curve-ball into the mix in the last few hours by saying he is interested in fighting Philippines' Manny Pacquiao, an eight-weight world champion. However, a bout between these two has been repeatedly talked about for years and never materialised.

    Manny Pacquiao

But in an interview with Showtime Boxing, Mayweather said: "I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao - we're trying to make the fight happen. Floyd Mayweather is not ducking or dodging any opponent. Now it's time for us to talk, we want to fight. Let's make it happen. May 2, let's do it."

  31. Post update

The fighters are in the ring and Jimmy Lennon Jr announces the fighters to a packed crowd at the MGM Grand. "It's showtime," screams the excited ring announcer.

  32. Viva Las Vegas

    MGM Grand

Las Vegas has become a second home for Amir Khan in recent years. Four of his last six fights have taken place there. His first three came at Mandalay Bay, but now he has returned to the amazing MGM Grand, the venue for his points victory over Luis Collazo in May.

Anyone who has been there will know the hotel is a huge maze, where you spend hours unsuccessfully trying to find your hotel room so decide to head to one of the numerous bars, restaurants, casinos or nightclubs instead.

British fans will certainly not be short of options for things to do there. But now is not the time to visit the lions enclosure and the Cirque du Soleil show can wait for another night. Tonight, the action comes from the 16,800-seat Grand Garden Arena, nestled in the bowels of the building.

    Devon Alexander v Amir Khan
  35. 'I don't see anything special'

    Devon alexander graphic

Will those comments come back to haunt Devon Alexander?

  36. Khan's opponent

The man in the opposite corner tonight is 27-year-old American Devon Alexander, a former two-weight world champion.

    Devon Alexander

Alexander, with 26 wins and two defeats from his 28 professional contests, has held the IBF and WBC titles at light-welterweight, before moving up to welterweight.

He is looking to get back to the top of the division after losing his IBF world welterweight belt to Shawn Porter last December.

  37. It won't be easy

We have already mentioned that Khan has set his sights on a potential showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But any hopes of fighting the American, who is unbeaten in 47 fights and the current holder of the WBC World welterweight, WBA Super World welterweight and WBC World light middleweight titles, will be smashed to pieces if Khan loses in Las Vegas.

And it is not going to be easy for the 28-year-old from Bolton.

  38. Wakey, wakey

Hello and good morning. Whether you're bleary eyed after setting your alarm clock for an early start, or just coming in after a fun Saturday night out, thanks for joining us and welcome to BBC Sport's live text commentary on what could be a huge night in the career of Amir Khan.

  39. Could Khan hit the jackpot?

"I want the boxing fans around the world to demand a fight between me and Floyd Mayweather."

    Amir Khan

Britain's Amir Khan holds the WBC Silver welterweight title, but is not satisfied. What he wants more than anything is a shot at the unbeaten American, regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

    Floyd Mayweather

Khan fights today in the gambling capital of the world.

A stunning, impressive victory, could just lead to him hitting the boxing jackpot.
