You know that wall you repeatedly clatter into when you go ice skating? Tonight it's used to filter the masses into their seats.

Interestingly, there are a lot of couples here. Boxing seems to have crossed over into a romantic night out.

Word is Gavin McDonnell personally sold 600 of the 3,000 or so tickets for tonight. There's a very local vibe on offer.

They'll have everything crossed for the Doncaster fighter. He's roughly two inches taller than his opposite number and you'd think he has to use that range to off set the iron-like punch Rey Vargas packs.

This lot pack a bit of punch too though. Their screams rattling off the steel backboards with the zing of a Storm Doris gust.

Sweet Caroline is normally the five-minute warning for these events and Vargas is heading to the ring as I type.

Sweet Caroline plays = Hull party.

They loved that. You can feel an energy in here now as the main event nears. Pundits look like balls of energy, the ring has been swept and now the lights dim...

  5. 'Win at all costs'published at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2017

    McDonnell v Vargas

Gavin McDonnell tells Sky Sports: "I've prepared well and I can see he means business, and you can't expect anything less as he is fighting for the world title.

"He is going to put everything into it but so am I and that means it will be a good fight for the fans.

"It is win at all costs. I'm putting it all on the line, I will give it 100%."

At around 19:45, between fights on the undercard, Gavin McDonnell and trainer Dave Coldwell came to the ring so the fighter could get a feel for his surroundings. A few jabs, a few feints, job done.

"Go on Gav," was the cry from the masses.

There are no fountains, no neon lights and there's no desert sun.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said this week that Hull's Ice Arena is "down and dirty" with a "bear pit" atmosphere and there's calculation behind his assertion.

This fight could have been in Mexico, but Hearn wanted Rey Vargas to feel "uncomfortable" in his surroundings.

Some 3,500 fans will be here as Gavin McDonnell makes his ring walk. He needs "every advantage" he can get according to Hearn. So will the underdog make the big-punching Vargas uneasy in these rugged surroundings? Or will the Mexican chill out when he sees a cinema next door and a retail park over the road?

    He may well love it.

  9. Brothers in armspublished at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2017

There is a bit of a trend in boxing. That is when one brother puts on the gloves, any others in the family tend to follow suit.

The McDonnells are identical twins but they are not alone in the sport. The American Charlo brothers, Jermell and Jermall, (confusing, I know) already hold IBF and WBC world titles in the light-middleweight division.

And they are certainly not the only British boxing brothers as the Smiths from Liverpool - Callum, Stephen, Liam and Paul - became the first family quadruple to win British belts.

And of course, the Selbys from Wales, Lee and Andrew, will be confident of following the McDonnells lead for dominating their respective divisions.

Gavin McDonnell told BBC Sport: "It's a good thing in boxing because it shows it's a great family sport. The Smiths and the Selbys are both very good but it's nice for me and my brother to be at the top."

  12. 'My brother's done it and now it's my turn'published at 21:21 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2017

Should he win tonight, Gavin McDonnell (pictured below left) will join his twin Jamie in becoming the first British twins to hold world titles.

Jamie is the current WBA bantamweight world champion but Gavin says if he claims the WBC super-bantamweight belt tonight, Jamie will be the 'number two twin.'

The pair are quite competitive in everything they do and you can read about their charismatic double act in more detail here.

Hello and welcome to BBC Sport's live text commentary as Great Britain's Gavin McDonnell aims to win the vacant WBC super-bantamweight world title.

He is up against Mexican Rey Vargas, a fighter with a perfect unbeaten record and a history of finishing his fights inside the distance.

It is certainly not going to be easy.

BMX bike. I want one too.

    Computer. I want one too.

World boxing title. I want one too.

There is already one world champion in the McDonnell family with Jamie, and now Gavin wants to become one as well.
