Carl Frampton secured a hard-fought points win over Mexican Horacio Garcia at the SSE Arena on his return to the ring after 10 months out of action.

The Belfast boxer was made to battle all the way but was awarded a unanimous decision on the judges' scorecards.

The two-weight world champion was fighting for the first time since his split from Barry McGuigan's Cyclone Promotions during the summer.

It was also his first contest since losing his WBA title to Leo Santa Cruz.

The bout was fought at a frantic pace but Frampton emerged victorious to clinch a 24th win from his 25 professional contests.

Boxing trainer Dave Coldwell had Frampton winning by two rounds.

Promoter Frank Warren talks up the possibility of Carl Frampton fighting for a world title at Windsor Park next summer.

"Josh (Warrington) is fighting Lee Selby that is probably going to take place in April," says Warren.

"We don't want Carl to not fight for 10 months so he will fight again and then we will be in Windsor Park for a big fight in the summer. That is what we promised and that is what we will do."

Asked who will be in the other corner in Windsor Park, Warren just replies "a world champion".

Trainer Jamie Moore, who worked in Frampton's corner for the first time, gave his performance on Carl Frampton's performance.

"He was OK, but he could do better," said Moore. "It was a great fight and it will do him no harm as he has got some tough rounds in and he will need that against someone like Santa Cruz or Mares."

Carl Frampton says: "I thought it was a good fight and everyone would have enjoyed that more than me. I was boxing lovely at the start then I let him drag me into a fight. I wanted it to be a hard fight, that has got the rust off, the cobwebs have gone and I want one of the big boys.

"I had all the input on that opponent, maybe I will let the team decide who I fight next.

"(Leo) Santa Cruz and (Abner) Mares are fighting and (Josh) Warrington and (Lee) Selby will probably fight in the spring so I will have to wait."

On the knockdown, Frampton said: "To be fair to Victor Loughlin, I slipped, but on the way down he caught me with a shot so it probably looked a knockdown.

"I have had a terrible few months."

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez was ringside and got into the ring after the fight. He was cheering on Garcia, but also had a selfie with Frampton.

Andrew Priestley: All three possible outcomes are on the table here. This could go either way, with a draw not out of the question. My gut says that Garcia has caused an upset, but will home advantage sway the judges?

A good final round for Frampton. He smiles at the end, thinking he has done enough and raises his arm to the delight of the home fans. But all credit to Garcia, he dug deep and produced a surprisingly entertaining contest.

We go to the judges scorecards, and remember Frampton was adjudged to have been knocked down in the seventh, even though it looked like a slip.

"Suck it up," screams Frampton's coach Jamie Moore at the end of the ninth. Remember, this is only a 10-round contest. That may well be a good thing for Frampton.

We were expecting this to just be a tune-up fight, a chance to get rid of the ring rust before moving on to bigger and better things, but with two rounds to go here, Carl Frampton is in danger of losing this.

What a disaster that would be for his career and his dreams of returning to world title level.
