On a ground-breaking night in Glasgow, Hannah Rankin was victorious as she retained her WBA & IBO Super-Welterweight world titles.

A close fight in the opening rounds began to go the way of the Scot as she showed her boxing pedigree.

Mexico's Alejandra Ayala put up a stern test but the fight was stopped in the tenth, and final, round as Rankin began to connect with a succession of powerful straight shots.

On her in-fight tweaks to her technique she added: “It’s stuff I've been working on in the gym coming together and paying off."

A round of applause ripples around the Hydro, and in the ring, as Alejandra Ayala returns to her feet after a lengthy break as she received some medical attention in her corner post-stoppage.

The referee stops it towards the end of the tenth and final round in favour of Hannah Rankin.

Ayala was on the ropes for all of the round as Hannah Rankin punished the Mexican fighter who appeared to have run out of steam in the final round.

Rankin began to roll off a succession of combinations and her straight jab consistently punctured Ayala's guard, forcing the referee to stop the contest.

Ayala remains persistent with her jab but Rankin has sussed it out and doesn't let her off the hook.

The Scot is keeping her opponent busy as she unloads a few heavy overhand rights.

Could a stoppage be in the offing in favour of Rankin after her dominant eighth round?

Ayala leaves herself open to a counter with every jab and Rankin has managed to exploit a few times.

The Scot lets the hands go too as she backs her opponent in to the corner.

As Ayala continues to lunge in, Rankin manages the distance between her and her opponent well.

Rankin's swelling has appeared to settle down a touch too.

A tight round again, yes, but the fighter from Mexico is persistent.

The crowd are continuing to grow more vocal as Rankin rounds of the end of that one landing a few solid combinations.

The Scot landed a precise jab on Ayala, leaving her cut.

Pre-fight it was reckoned this one was set to go the distance and it certainly seems to be heading in that direction right now.

Another tight round of boxing, with Ayala possibly shading it.

Hannah Rankin's left cheekbone has some swelling and is increasing rapidly, possibly the result of an accidental clash of heads.

The fighter's eye could end up closing soon if it continues.

Ayala opened the round well with impressive speed.

After the referee stepped in to separate them halfway through, the Scot began to rally the crowd as she pushed in on her opponent.

Rankin is connecting well with a couple nice one-two combinations.

Ayala's jab seems to be her weapon of choice but the Scot is rolling out of it well and popping up sharply to counter.

Still not much between the two, certainly not the easiest to score yet.
