  1. 'That is good for Dubois'published at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2022

    Daniel Dubois v Kevin Lerena

Dubois' promoter Frank Warren to BT Sport: "I'm proud of what Daniel has done. He got caught in the top of the head, and I could see something was wrong with his leg. Shane did a fantastic job in the corner.

"That in some way is good for him [Dubois], shows he's got heart, I take my hat off to him.

"Lerena is no mug, he fancied the job and caught him with a good shot. But Dan did the business, we will assess and get him out early in the next year. I'm absolutely proud of him."

  2. 'We will have to get a scan'published at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2022

    Daniel Dubois v Kevin Lerena

Dubois' trainer Shane McGuigan to BT Sport: "I think he's done a ligament in his knee. We will have to get a scan. But it's sink or swim, and he swam.

"I just said, you have to walk him on to shots because he has no power in the back leg. It was heart in mouth, but he got a great knock out.

Who will Dubois fight next? "We've mentioned Dillian Whyte, Dan needs a big name, to be headlining these shows. But we will get the scan, see how long he will be out. Ligaments can take a long time."

The first on-air swear of the evening from Dubois there. Sure it won't be the last.

Also, big claims from Frampton on Dubois' corner. We won't have heard the last of that.

  4. 'I have the heart of a warrior'published at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2022

    Daniel Dubois v Kevin Lerena

WBA (Regular) heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois speaking to BT Sport: "It was amazing. He caught me on the top of my head. I feel my knee went.

"But I have the heart of a warrior, and I just thought, calm down. S*** happens, doesn't it?

"I was looking for shots that weren't there, I had to recover and come back out. I saw the opening, went for it and the rest is history.

"I felt a bit rusty, like I wasn't there in the first round. But at least I was able to land my shots.

"I've never boxed in front of as many people, hopefully many more to come."

  5. Should Dubois have been pulled out?published at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2022

    Carl Frampton
Former world champion on BT Sport

If you’ve got a fighter saying 'what happened there', that’s when the corner needs to say ‘no more’. For me that’s a corner who didn’t have the fighter’s best interests at heart.

  7. Dubois survives huge scarepublished at 20:49 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2022

    Dubois stops Lerena in third

What a recovery from Daniel Dubois, who was faced with the real prospect of suffering a devastating defeat.

Down three times in a truly remarkable first round, the Briton managed to keep hold of his WBA regular belt thanks to some brilliant shots in the third, which floored Kevin Lerena.

He got up, but then an onslaught from Dubois, including a truly brutally brilliant uppercut saw Howard Foster dive in to stop it.

Every time that uppercut has been shown on the huge screens here, there has been a massive roar / gasp. A stunning shot and one that has helped him stay on the verge of greatness.

A huge scare but, if Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk can't be sorted out, Dubois may just have a chance to fight Usyk in 2023 and Dubois would need to be so much better than here.

However, a great recovery tonight, maybe a career-saving one.

I think Dubois was more surprised by how his ankle gave way in round one more than anything Lerena did, and it took him a little while to get back in the right place mentally.

But once he did, his sheer power and pace showed. And Dubois has shown he can win at 50%, and overcome unexpected adversity.

Blimey, that turned in an instant.

Dubois' trainer Shane McGuigan told his man to keep calm, walk around the ring and throw jabs for the next couple of rounds after that stunning opener when Dubois went down three times.

Dubois did as he was told - but in the final minute of round three, he unleashed a gigantic right to floor the South African, before following it with a flurry to end that bout comprehensively.

It looks as though Dubois went over on his ankle as he lost his footing in the ring, rather than because of any big hit by Lerena.

"What happened," he asks his trainer. He has as little idea what happened there as the rest of us.

Definitely one to keep an eye on for the rest of this fight.
