Joe Joyce has been mandatory challenger for the WBO belt since July 2021. He may have to wait even longer for his shot at champion Oleksandr Usyk, though.

The sanctioning bodies agreed to a rotation policy for mandatory defences at heavyweight, meaning Usyk will have to first defend against WBA mandatory Daniel Dubois and IBF number one challenger Filip Hrgovic.

But Joyce is not willing to just sit back and patiently wait for his shot.

He is taking on losable fights against the likes of former champion Joseph Parker and now the hard-hitting and dangerous Zhilei Zhang.

Speaking to BT Sport, Mikaela Mayer said: "She stepped in last minute, that was really gutsy of her. She was tough and durable, I see why she has the confidence to do that. Props to her.”

"I wanted to go attack, she would take that little step backwards. I like to fight on the inside. Once I knew she couldn’t outbox me, I tried to take it to her.

"I do believe Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will go for their rematch. If that happens, I believe it will, I will challenge the winner. I feel great, I want the toughest fights possible. Right now that’s Katie Taylor."

Solid job there from Mikaela Mayer. She boxed beautifully at times and cruised to victory in the end. Fair play to Lucy Wildheart - going the distance, and having some success, against a former world champion. She's done her reputation no harm.

No surprises here.

Lucy Wildheart has shown tremendous heart but this is a clear win for Mikaela Mayer.

She has thrown the better shots with more quality.

The white gloves of Mikaela Mayer are the busier of the two fighters in round nine.

From the head to the body and back up again. She has the full range of shots.

Into the final round...

Mikaela Mayer is two rounds from victory.

She is looking comfortable now but Lucy Wildheart is still trying to throw her shots. She will need the big finish to win this one.

She is throwing more combinations and is just more polished. The gap between the fighters is growing wider now.

Lucy Wildheart seems to be slowing a bit.

I'd say the first few rounds Mayer was doing a little more work. But the last few rounds she's really started to dominate, putting it on Wildheart.

Is Mikaela Mayer starting to assert her dominance?

The straight jab works well again and she is throwing the better shots.

But write Lucy Wildheart off at your peril. She is still very much in this fight.

Lucy Wildheart's weekend plans changed pretty swiftly on Friday. She got a huge cheer from this East London crowd on entrance and does not seem completely overawed in the ring. The more accomplished Mayer is showing her class and working well to the body, but Wildheart is fighting back. She is not here just to make up the numbers.

Crash. Bang. Wallop.

Neither fighter taking a backward step.

Nice shots from Mayer straight down the pipe. Displaying really nice skills - her amateur pedigree really coming through in that round.

The left hook is Lucy Wildheart's main weapon and she steps inside to throw to the body.

Having got through once, she tries it again but Mikaela Mayer times her counter well and probably just edges the round again.

It's a real battle.

Lucy Wildheart has certainly not come here to make up the numbers and she comes forward again.

But Mikaela Mayer connects with a right hand to the body and is more crisp with her shots.
