McLaren's Lando Norris set the pace in Friday practice at the British Grand Prix from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

Norris, 15 points behind team-mate Oscar Piastri in the championship heading into his home race, was 0.222 seconds quicker than Leclerc.

Hamilton was just 0.079secs behind this team-mate, while Piastri appeared to be lagging behind Norris on Friday and ended it 0.470secs off the pace.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, complaining over the radio of a lack of front grip through Silverstone's high-speed corners, was fifth fastest.

  2. FP3 build-up from 11:15 BST on Saturdaypublished at 17:15 British Summer Time

Ferrari look ready to add their names into pole fight chat after today's showing. Charles Leclerc told his engineer the team need to maximise qualifying, but the set-up for the race is "pretty good".

However, can Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton produce a better lap than Lando Norris when it counts on Saturday? Is the Briton the favourite for the front-row spot on home soil?

We'll find out tomorrow, right after we've boxed off one more practice session. And the weather is forecast to be rubbish, so that should make things interesting.

Enjoy the rest of your Friday, folks, and we'll see you again at 11:15 BST start. Third practice gets under way at 11:30 BST.

    See you on Saturday!

  4. 'Ferraris are a real surprise'published at 17:07 British Summer Time

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent at Silverstone

The Ferraris look quick on one lap but Charles Leclerc is also the fastest over a long run, he's averaging one minute, 31.898 in the Ferrari and that's quicker than Verstappen.

For all Max Verstappen's complaints, the Red Bull looks competitive as you might expect it to. But I think the Ferraris are the real surprise, I think it's surprised them because they were nowhere in Austria, they've pretty much been nowhere compared to the front of the field, apart from the sprint in China. These races runs provide the most accurate picture at the end of Friday.

If you were Cadillac team principal, would you push for Valtteri Bottas, plus maybe a fresh rookie, as your 2026 line-up. Or would Sergio Perez be your choice as the expereienced driver to fill the seat?

Out on track, it looks like Max Verstappen, in a car that hasn't exactly been smooth driving so far, is quickest on the medium tyres in race trim.

  10. Bottas 'brilliant driver'published at 16:53 British Summer Time

    Rebecca Clancy
F1 journalist on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Silverstone

[Valtteri Bottas] was a brilliant driver, he's what you need. He is the sort of person who can pick up and take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself. He is very well known for the feedback that he can give about the cars and developing it.

  11. Is Antonelli a generational talent?published at 16:50 British Summer Time

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent at Silverstone

I think what's interesting about Antonelli is that he was billed as a generational talent. You hear about the test here at Silverstone in the wet, a first time in an F3 car when he was four seconds a lap faster than the other drivers. He'd never been in an F3 car or at Silverstone before. Those are the things that make people think he's the next Hamilton, Alonso, Verstappen.

Yes, he's 18 years old and his team-mate has an exceptional high calibre, but there haven't been any moments, apart from the Miami sprint pole, that make you go wow. When you've got a person who is going to be a generational talent, you get those moments quite early on. There might not be that many of them, but they happen.

  12. Postpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time

If this was end of qualifying on Saturday, Kimi Antonelli would still start in the top 10 but he would move from sixth to ninth on the Silverstone grid. Up at the front, it would be a Lando Norris-Charles Leclerc front row.

The soft tyres have finished their shift for the day, so now it's time to bolt back on the medium compound and head out to gather more data with some long running.

  13. ICYMI: Three-place grid penalty for Antonellipublished at 16:45 British Summer Time

Kimi Antonelli has a three-place grid penalty for shunting into the back of Max Verstappen last time out in Austria. Wherever he qualifies, he goes back three places.

  15. Albon 'very good driver'published at 16:41 British Summer Time

    Rebecca Clancy
F1 journalist on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Silverstone

The thing with Alex Albon is everyone knows he he's been good for a really long time. Back in the go-karting days, he was taking fights with Verstappen and winning. He is a very good driver who deserves the drive he's got in F1. The second Red Bull promoted him, I thought this is being over-promoted. Albon is a fantastic driver, he got overpromoted at Red Bull and paid the price for that. He's brilliant, I really do rate Albon.

BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson sat down with Alex Albon on Thursday for a lengthy chat about his career, his new team-mate Carlos Sainz and his hopes for where Williams can be in the future. Albon also gave an insight into how feels to switch teams and adpat to a different style of car.

Charles Leclerc improves and goes second on the timesheets, a little bit closer to Lando Norris' marker, but still 0.222 seconds away from the McLaren.

  18. Hamilton up to P2published at 16:36 British Summer Time

Soft lap complete for Lewis Hamilton and his effort his good enough for second spot - but not quite special enough to beat Lando Norris' marker, which is three tenths quicker. Charles Leclerc said a few moments ago there was more time to be found in the Ferrari, so is it Norris versus the Italian team for tommorrow’s pole fight?

  19. Norris goes P1published at 16:34 British Summer Time

The crowd are cheering, especially in the Lando Grandstand, as their man Norris vaults to the top of the timesheets with a soft run of 1:25.816. Lewis Hamilton backed out of his lap, so we're yet to see what the seven-time world champion has for qualifying pace.

  20. Verstappen 'not happy' with carpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time

    Jennie Gow
    F1 pit-lane reporter at Silverstone

I have made my way to Red Bull, they're taping the front suspension on Max's car.

Fans are saying the car looks twitchy, it doesn't look comfortable for Max. Max is not happy with the car and the way it is reacting underneath him.
