A silence has descended over the Monaghan support after all their pre-match optimism that they could surprise Donegal.

In truth, Donegal's fans have been fairly muted too as if what has unfolded so far is exactly what they expected so why should they be getting too excited.

Donegal's fans appear to be resting their lungs for future trips they anticipate making in the coming months.

Micheal Bannigan lands a free just as the hooter sounds and it's a six-point deficit for Monaghan at half time after a dominant Donegal display in the opening 35 minutes.

Monaghan have a mountain to climb but it's not impossible in the modern game with two-pointers on offer.

Ciaran Thompson lit up that half for Donegal. Five points for him and some fine contributions from Peadar Mogan, Daire O Baoill and Michael Murphy have Jim McGuinness' side well on top at the mid-point.

    Monaghan 0-7 Donegal 0-14

Ryan Wylie concedes a free and Ciaran Thompson lashes the free over the bar.

Lovely display of shooting from the experienced Thompson so far.

A minute to go until half time and it's double scores.

  19. Postpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time

    Monaghan 0-7 Donegal 0-13

Donegal pick up where they left off before that break in play as Ciaran Thompson improves his tally to 0-4 with another heat-seeker.

Fine response by Ballybay's Dessie Ward, however, who smashes over a two-pointer. That's exactly what Monaghan need.

  20. Substitutionspublished at 14:35 British Summer Time

    Monaghan 0-5 Donegal 0-12

Ryan McHugh looks in a great deal of discomfort after colliding with Rory Beggan and the game will be stopped while the Donegal man receives attention.

It'll come as a much-needed breather for Monaghan, who have been under the pump from the first minute. Indeed, Gabriel Bannigan opts to introduce Jack McCarron with David Garland making way.

McCarron is certainly capable of knocking over a few two-pointers.

Gavin McPhillips is also on for Micheal McCarville.

McHugh cannot continue for Donegal and he is replaced by Odhran McFadden Ferry.
