  1. Alonso injury not as bleak as it soundspublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 1 August

    Andrew Benson
BBC F1 correspondent at the Hungaroring

It seems that Fernando Alonso’s injury situation is not as bleak as Aston Martin’s statement made it sound. The intention is very much for him to compete in the rest of the weekend. The idea behind him missing this session is that it’s one less hour of running that he needs to do, in the least relevant session of the three days. Felipe Drugovich is more than capable of running through Alonso’s programme, and Alonso is more than capable of getting up to speed in a couple of laps of the next session.

  2. 'No power' for Gaslypublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 1 August

Pierre Gasly claimed Alpine's only point of the weekend in Belgium but the Frenchman is on the radio straight out of the gate in Hungary with an issue. "No power," says Gasly, who is quickly told to box so the mechanics can take a look.

With Fernando Alonso watching on from the treatment table for this first hour, the debate has started about the Spaniard's age. He turned 44 on Tuesday, so is time catching up to him now? Or is this just a niggle that every driver gets and we just don't hear about it. Solidarity with Alonso from all us over 40s.

Felipe Drugovich is in the car, which has a small update this weekend, and is out on the hard tyres.

  6. What are the Hungarian GP tyres?published at 12:35 British Summer Time 1 August

For the last track action before drivers swap Formula 1 cars for jet skis, Pirelli has brought along the C3 (hard), C4 (medium) and C5 (soft) - the same as in Austria - as the trio of slick tyres for the 40th anniversary of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The green intermediates and blue full wets have also made the journey.

The temperatures in Budapest at this time of year can be blisteringly hot, with last year's race hitting the highest track temperature of the season at 58.6C, so thermal degradation will be high in the list of concerns this weekend.

  7. Aron in for Hulkenberg in FP1published at 12:32 British Summer Time 1 August

The 21-year-old is making another first practice appearance this weekend - we last saw him at Silverstone a few weeks ago - and is taking the place of Nico Hulkenberg in the opening hour of track running in Hungary.

If you're a George Russell fan who is hoping for a resolution in the British driver's contract negotiations with Mercedes, you might have to hang on a little bit longer.

“I mean, on the record, yeah, conversations have started, but we are now heading into the summer break," said Russell yesterday.

While he and team boss Toto Wolff have spoken "a lot" this week, the 27-year-old said the main focus of their chats has been how to solve the car's performance, which has frustrated the Silver Arrows of late.

"And I personally want to go into the summer break and enjoy the only two weeks off I have in the year. I don't want to be thinking about contracts," he added.

"And there isn't really a major time pressure now from my side, nor from Mercedes' side."

Max Verstappen doesn't like soap operas, so with all the commotion surrounding his future with Red Bull and a possible switch to rivals Mercedes, the Dutchman has finally confirmed where he will be driving next season.

Speaking on Thursday, he said he hasn't addressed the speculation because he has been focused on how the team can improve. "But yeah, I think it's time to basically stop all the rumours. And for me, it's always been quite clear that I was staying anyway," he added.

"I think that was also the general feeling in the team anyway, because we were always in discussions about what we could do with the car.

"And I think when you're not interested in staying, then you also stop talking about these kind of things. And I never did."

  14. McLaren ahead of Ferraripublished at 12:12 British Summer Time 1 August

Charles Leclerc's third place last week puts Ferrari in second on 248 points in the standings - which is still quite a way off McLaren's leading total of 516 points. If the constructors' champions keep going at this pace, they can retain their title as early as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September.

The midfield fight is still a close run contest. While Williams in fifth have breathing space from the rest of the pack, just eight points separate Sauber in sixth from ninth-placed Haas.

  15. Piastri leading the waypublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 1 August

Second spot on the grid proved to be the winning position at Belgian Grand Prix. Oscar Piastri's victory puts a 16-point buffer between himself and Lando Norris, while Max Verstappen, winner of the sprint race at Spa, sits 81 points behind the Australian.

Second-placed Norris is 65 points ahead of four-time world champion Verstappen in third, with George Russell and Begium podium finisher Charles Leclerc not too far off in fourth and fifth respectively.

Fernando Alonso is on the sidelines for this opening session in Hungary, as the Spaniard is nursing a muscular injury in his back.

Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich will take Alonso's place in first practice, then a decision will be made as to whether the 44-year-old, who has been managing the injury since the Belgian Grand Prix, can participate in the rest of the weekend.

Hello, folks. The Formula 1 season has reached the Hungaroring in Hungary - the final race before we all head off on our summer holidays - and it's a traditional weekend following last week's Belgian sprint event. So no extra points on offer.

First practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix gets under way at 12:30 BST.

Second practice then goes green at 16:00 BST.

Belgium last time out brought us heavy rain, a delayed start and another McLaren one-two. Oscar Piastri's sixth win of the campaign puts him 16 points clear of team-mate Lando Norris, who started on pole at Spa but was passed by the Australian early doors.
