  1. First bogey for Rorypublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 12 June

    McIlroy -1, Lowry +4, Rose +4 (10*)

Rory McIlroy drills his tee shot off the first but is just a touch short with his approach - he should've putted it like we've seen players doing on the practice days!

He's left with a dangerous putt down this hugely sloping green, and despite barely breathing on the ball it rolls and rolls and goes well beyond the flag.

And McIlroy can't make the par save coming back so that's a first bogey of the day - which is a huge blow after such a smoking tee shot.

  2. Postpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 12 June

    DeChambeau E (10)

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau finds the fairway and is in position A on the 11th.

He's hit six of nine fairways from the tee so far today.

If DeChambeau can combine his incredible power with that kind of accuracy for the remainder of the week, expect him to be contending at the business end of a major once again.

  3. Spaun saves parpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 12 June

    Spaun -4 (12*)

JJ Spaun sends his approach to the third hole over the back of the green, but our leader scrambles well from the greenside rough to save par.

  4. Postpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 12 June

    DeChambeau E, Schauffele +2 (10)

Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele narrowly miss birdie attempts from distance on the 10th so it's a par apiece for the American duo.

  5. Detry loves a US Open testpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 12 June

    Detry -2 (7)

Thomas Detry played really well in the US Open last year, finishing 14th at Pinehurst, and he's started nicely again with two birdies in his first seven holes.

The Belgian has got serious game and obviously it stands up well in the toughest test around.

  6. Mickelson back to level parpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 12 June

    Mickelson E (8*)

Phil Mickelson, in what might be his final US Open, made a double bogey on the 15th but has clawed both of those shots back with birdies on 16 and 17.

The veteran left-hander is back to level par.

  7. Solid front nine for McIlroypublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 12 June

    McIlroy -2, Lowry +4, Rose +4 (9*)

Rory McIlroy pars 18 to hit the trun in two under, with two birdies and no bogeys on his card so far - that's some effort in for just nine holes at Oakmont.

More importantly, he's not been in too much trouble apart from on 17 so it's all been rather controlled and that's a really good sign.

Shane Lowry and Justin Rose though have both had nightmares in their opening nine holes, as they both make bogeys on 18 to make the turn four over par and in big trouble already.

  8. Postpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 12 June

    MacIntyre E (8)

The par-three eighth is the hole that all the players have been talking about, with tournament organisers the United States Golf Association promising it will play 301 yards at some point this week.

It's just the 276 yards today and Bob MacIntyre finds the dancefloor with his tee shot. He's perhaps 25 feet from the hole and his ball has a good look at the hole as it sidles just past the left edge.

  9. Bogey for Abergpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 12 June

    Aberg -1, Scott -2 (10*)

Ludvig Aberg starts his back nine with a bogey on the 1st hole thanks to a visit to the rough off the tee. It really is crucial to try and find as many fairways as possible, and when he's on the short stuff Aberg is threatening the hole almost every time.

  10. Bryson drops backpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 12 June

    DeChambeau E, Schauffele +2 (9)

One of the shots of the day from Xander Schauffele, after finding himself in trouble off the tee and having to play out sideways onto the fairway.

His approach from 160 yards lands within 12 inches of the cup and it's a tap-in par for the 2024 US PGA and Open champion.

Bryson DeChambeau, meanwhile, misses a short-ish par putt and drops back to level par for the tournament.

  11. Par saves!published at 15:16 British Summer Time 12 June

    McIlroy -2, Lowry +3, Rose +3 (8*)

After all that, both Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy save their pars at 17 - Lowry chipping in from the fringe and McIlroy sinking a testing par putt as they both sign for eventful fours.

  12. Birdie for Bobpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 12 June

    MacIntyre E (7)

A rare sight at Oakmont... a 30-foot putt dropping in the hole. Bob Mac take a bow. The Scot is the man with the putter in hand, watching his ball track beautifully across the seventh green and he's back to where he started.

  13. Moldovan fades after eagle startpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 12 June

    Moldovan +3 (9)

American qualifier Maxwell Moldovan started his round by holing his 189-yard approach for eagle on the first hole, but he's made three bogeys and a double bogey on the rest of the front nine and he's three over par at the turn.

  14. Shot gone for Tommypublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 12 June

    Fleetwood +2 (9)

Tommy Fleetwood holes a seven-footer for a five on the par-four ninth. That gives him a total of 37 at the halfway stage of this opening round and as we've seen with the likes of JJ Spaun and Rory McIlroy, there are birdie opportunities on the inward stretch.

  15. In-form Griffin starts wellpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 12 June

    Griffin -1 (9*)

Ben Griffin has been in sensational form recently - a top-10 finish at the US PGA was followed by victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge and second position behind Scottie Scheffler at the Memorial.

He's one under after nine holes of his opening round at Oakmont, with no dropped shots and just the one birdie coming on 17.

  16. Lowry losing his cool, Rory in troublepublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 12 June

    McIlroy -2, Lowry +3, Rose +3 (7*)

Rory McIlroy finds the rough on 17 and can only hack it out into the greenside bunker, which doesn't look too bad from above, but then you see McIlroy in this huge trap that's deeper than he is tall!

He flips it out and has a tough putt for par.

Shane Lowry is on the other side of the green in more rough and when he flubs his effort the rage starts to build as he bots the microphone sat by the green in anger.

  17. Spaun maintains leadpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 12 June

    Spaun -4 (10*)

Another solid par for JJ Spaun on the first - his 10th hole of the day having started on the 10th.

He holes his par putt from 12 feet to stay a shot clear of Gary Woodland and he remains one of the few early starters without a bogey on his scorecard.

  18. Postpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 12 June

    Ballester +5, DeChambeau -1, Schauffele +2 (8)

On the long par-three eighth, Bryson DeChambeau putts from the fairway in front of the green to within three feet and knocks in for par to stay one under.

Xander Schauffele makes an excellent par save after failing to find the green with his tee shot - a good response after that double bogey on the previous hole.

  19. Fine starts by Aberg and Scottpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 12 June

    Aberg -2, Scott -2 (9*)

Textbook birdie on the 18th for Ludvig Aberg, smashing a drive and finding a fairway, and once on the short stuff he's got a great iron game so it's no surprise he sticks his approach close and the strokes home the birdie putt

That's three birdies and one bogey for Aberg in a first nine holes of 33 for him.

His playing partner Adam Scott is also out in 33 with a birdie on the 18th. That's five birdies for the Aussie - who said Oakmont was tough?

  20. Double for Lowrypublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 12 June

    McIlroy -2, Lowry +3, Rose +3 (7*)

    Shane LowryImage source, Getty Images

A safe enough par three for Rory McIlroy after a steady enough tee shot - but it's all going horribly wrong for his playing partners.

Shane Lowry makes a double bogey five here after finding the bunker and then missing a five footer for bogey, while Justin Rose misses from four feet for par.

That's now three bogeys in a row for Rose.
