Takayasu's signature "shoulder blast" in action. His powerful tachiai (initial charge) was key to many of his 794 professional career wins (out of 1382)

Look out for the judge's wooden fan (gunbai) when the rikishi meet at the centre of the dohyō. If he's pointing to the side, it's not time to go yet. When the gyoji points his gunbai to the middle, the tachiai (initial charge) can start.

We're having a rematch!
The moment a bout ends, the judge (gyoji) has to point his wooden fan to the side of the ring of the winning rikishi.
The result is not always straight-forward, however. Ring-side judges, dressed in black and sitting on the side of the dohyō, can raise their hand to object to the judge’s call if they think it’s wrong or needs to be carefully reviewed -a mono-ii.
The judges confer at the centre of the dohyō, and they receive support by others who can watch the replay. The judges can they confirm the gyoji’s decision, reverse it, or even call for a rematch if the bout is too close to call.
The rematch - torinaoshi - is usually cheered by people in the stands who get to watch the two rikishi having another go.
