Down and Fermanagh are two of the favourites to lift this year’s Tailteann Cup, and they both strengthened their cases with emphatic wins this afternoon.
Down were always in control against Limerick in Newry, and had 14 points to spare at the final whistle.
The hosts went 0-9 to 0-1 ahead early on, with Pat Havern causing mayhem inside the Limerick defence.
They led by six points at the interval and in reality put the game beyond doubt when Daniel Guinness rattled the net early in the second half.
Limerick’s Peter Nash answered back with a goal of his own, but once Jamie Baynham was shown a straight red card there was no way back for the visitors.
Down claimed eight of the last nine points of the game, with substitute John McGovern particularly impressive – he scored three from play.
In the earlier of the two games, three second half goals saw Fermanagh trounce Wicklow by 16 points at Brewster Park.
The hosts benefitted from a spread of scores in the first half, with three from Fionan O’Brien helping them to take a 0-8 to 0-4 lead in at the break, but it was after the interval when Fermanagh did the most of their damage.
Sean Cassidy raised the first green flag to make it 1-10 to 0-5, and from then on Fermanagh never looked in doubt.
Conor Love was introduced from the bench in place of Cassidy, and he doubled his counterpart’s goal-scoring load, hitting the net twice in the space of three minutes to leave a very healthy winning margin on the scoreboard.
Elsewhere, Tyrone reached the All-Ireland Under-20 Football final with a 3-18 to 3-8 win over Roscommon at Breffni Park.
Shea O’Hare, Conor O'Neill and Eoin McElholm scored the goals for Paul Devlin's Tyrone.
The young Red Hands, who won the title in 2022, will face Kerry in next weekend's decider.
The Kingdom - managed by Kerry great Tomas O'Se - booked their first final berth for 16 years with a narrow 0-12 to 0-11 win over Meath in Thurles.
