Australia led the medal table on the Gold Coast four years ago and crossing the world has not stopped them doing the same in Birmingham.

The Aussies racked up more success today, extending their advantage to 52 medals by winning nine gold, five silver and six bronze.

England, with their golden success in swimming, triathlon and gymnastics, move above New Zealand into second place.

Scotland are well into double figures after finding silver lining in the velodrome, while Wales won their first gold of the Games.

It is heartbreak at the table tennis for the Wales women's team as they miss out on the gold medal match following a 3-2 semi-final defeat against Malaysia.

It proved a three-and-a-half hour epic which came down to the final set of the final match between Charlotte Carey and Ho Ying.

Wales will have to pick themselves up for the bronze medal match against Australia on Monday morning with Malaysia facing Singapore in the final.

It is still the highest Commonwealth Games position the Wales women's team have registered after finishing fifth on the Gold Coast in 2018.

Birmingham hasn't seen so much gold since the Jewellery Quarter's 19th Century heyday.

Another 24 pieces of bright, malleable metal have been dished out at the Games today.

• English swimmer James Wilby shattered team-mate Adam Peaty's hold on the 100m breaststroke title
• More English success in the pool saw Alice Tai put clear water between herself and the competition to take 100m S8 backstroke gold by more than four seconds

It's gold for South Africa in the men's rugby sevens - they beat Fiji 31-7 to win their first gold in the event since Glasgow 2014.

It was a joint effort from South Africa as tries came from five different players, with Muller du Plessis getting two.

For Fiji, this is their FOURTH Commonwealth silver and the wait for a gold goes on. They sink to their knees on the pitch, it's gutting for them.

England's 4x200m freestyle relay team have been reacting after securing the bronze.

Abbie Wood, who withdrew from an individual event to focus on the team event: "Sometimes you’ve got to make decisions and my breaststroke just wasn't on it this morning. So I didn't feel it was worth sacrificing the relay because it could’ve made the difference. I've still got the medley tomorrow so I just had t be a bit smart about it."

Tamryn van Selm: "It's amazing being able to compete in front of this crowd is a dream come true. So really enjoyed racing tonight and I’m really proud of these girls.

Competing against world record time, Freya Colbert said: "It was amazing when the girls were cheering for Titmus down the last length and the crowd when they finished, it was such a nice thing to be a part of."

Freya Anderson, on the battle with South Africa being close: "Yeah definitely, I kind of saw South Africa were biting at our feet a bit so I knew I had to get my head down, stay calm and get my hand on the wall.

England cyclist Matt Walls has been released from hospital after he was involved in a crash in which both he and his bike flew into the crowd.

He tweeted a little earlier to say he has come away with "no serious injuries".

Medi Harris, who won bronze for Wales earlier: "I’m so happy with that swim, it was a really good race. Hopefully as time goes on I'll be able to work on that back end and keep up with them.

"I’ve just got used to swimming heats, semis and finals. So I’m really happy that I was able to hit the same time as last night. Usually I'm used to swimming in the morning and warming up for the night, so I'm really happy with that."

All over in the netball and Scotland had a late resurgence in that final quarter with some more promising signs from the Thistles.

But ultimately Wales had already done the business in the first three quarters and managed to get themselves over the line to record their first victory of the Games in pool A.

Scotland are yet to win a match.

Australia are the world champions and favourites to win Commonwealth gold. Today they showed why with a stunning victory over Barbados.

After skittling Barbados for 64 all out, where Hayley Matthews was the only batter to reach double figures, the Aussies needed just 49 balls to reach their target.

Captain Meg Lanning hit an unbeaten 36, aided by 23 from Alyssa Healy as Beth Mooney's wicket was the only one to fall.

But a superb performance by Australia as they storm to gold with a new world record time of 7:39.29.

Canada take the silver.

Into the final leg and Australia are way ahead. Canada are second but Abbie Wood has had a great third leg for England and the battle with South Africa for the bronze is on.

The defending champions Australia have moved into the lead at the halfway mark while England have been overtaken by South Africa.

England are third after the first leg. Canada first and Australia second.
