Cricket - India lose first wicketpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    India 30-1 v Australia

Five overs in and there's plenty of action at Edgbaston.

India opener Smriti Mandhana races to 24 off 17 balls before feathering one behind to the keeper.

And that wicket has ever so slightly slowed down India with batters Shafali Verma and Astika Bhatia struggling to find the boundary and settling for singles.

This feels like a crucial point in the race.

World number one Hayden Wilde is part of a three-strong breakaway group on the bike leg. Alongside him is fellow New Zealander Tayler Reid and South African Jamie Riddle.

They have 16 seconds on the chasing pack after the first lap.

Hockey - Early goals in thrilling startpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    South Africa 1-1 Scotland

Scotland capitalise on a flurry penalty corners finally making one count with a slip left to Charlotte Watson.

The forward is calm under pressure, slotting the ball between the onrushing keeper's legs.

But less than a minute later South Africa are back level as Lisa-Marie Deetlefs bundles home a rebound.

    Not a bad first quarter.

I say finest. South Africa's Henri Schoeman, the defending champion, is a late no-show.

The first out of the water is New Zealand's Tayler Reid, with England's Alex Yee not far behind.

Jersey's Daniel Lee is the early fan favourite here at Arena Birmingham courtesy of an excellent display in the first rotation of the men's team final and individual qualification.

He leads the all-around standings with a score of 78.050 having secured the top-score on the floor, rings and parallel bars.

A few Northern Irish voices making themselves heard in the arena as they prepare to see their three athletes in the second rotation which begins at midday.

Among them, of course, is defending pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan.

    The Downeys

The Downeys are down from Cumbria.

Who are they supporting? Well, it's complex.

Mum Helen insists Team England, but dad Richard, from Northern Ireland, is a little bit of a reluctant recruit to the cause.

He just about brought himself to wear a white and red British and Irish Lions training top. That far and no further. You have to have certain lines don't you.

Interesting feedback for the organisers by the way. They would have liked to buy tickets for the swimming as well, but found with Shay, Isla and Orla rounding out a family of five, they couldn't get seats all together.

They unrestricted seating of the grandstand means no such problems here at the triathlon.

    Gaenor and Helena Coy

Gaenor and Helena Coy have come down from Ikley to support their son and brother Dominic, who is competing in the men's race for Wales today.

They say they haven't heard from him this morning, but that is more likely to be typically laid back approach to family communication rather than any pre-race jitters.

"I am probably more nervous than he is," says Gaenor.

Big props for sister Helena, herself a keen triathlete, who produced a felt-tip draining piece of artwork in support of her sibling. A couple of hours work in there...

There will be no gold medal for England's Laura Kenny, Josie Knight, Maddie Leech and Sophie Lewis.

Their time is only good enough for the bronze medal final, where they will face Wales.

The Welsh line-up of Megan Barker, Ella Barnwell, Anna Morris and Jessica Roberts clock 4:20.398.

That race, coming up in the later session today, will be a feast for the home crowd!

It's Australia v New Zealand for the gold.
