European champion Howell enjoyed the better of the contest but Beauchemin-Pinard weathered the storm and takes the gold.

The heptathlon continues tonight with England's Katarina Johnson-Thompson having a narrow 17-point lead after two events.

The 29-year-old, who won the 2019 world title, was fifth after an underwhelming 13.83 seconds in the 100m hurdles.

She topped the high-jump rankings with a clearance of 1.84m to give her 2032 points in total.

Australia's Taneille Crase is second and England's Holly Mills third on 2000 points.

The shot put and 200m take place tonight.

There's an all-England semi-final in the women's squash at 17:45 BST.

Georgina Kennedy plays 2018 silver medallist Sarah-Jane Perry before England's defending champion James Willstrop takes on Wales' Joel Makin in the men's semi-finals at 18:30 BST.

"We'll both be massively up for it," Perry said yesterday.

Birmingham-born Perry added she would "absolutely love to get to another final" after she won silver on the Gold Coast four years ago.

"I'm in really good shape, I'm moving well," she said. "I feel like I'm the fittest I've been for a long time, so this is the event we wanted to peak for and I really believe that is what we have done."

Plenty still to come today, with the evening's athletics and swimming getting under way shortly after 19:00 BST.

There are six athletics gold medals on offer in the first night session at Alexander Stadium, where England will be looking to Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw in the women's pole vault, Sophie Hahn in the women's T37/38 100m, and Hannah Cockroft in the women's T33/34 100m.

In the pool, England's Adam Peaty will be hoping to make amends in the men's 50m breaststroke final, after finishing out of the medals over 100m on Sunday, while the men's 100m butterfly includes defending champion Chad le Clos of South Africa and England's James Guy.

There's also Judo and 3x3 basketball medals, among others, to be decided!

This is a tight gold medal match!

Scotland's Garry Brown and Kevin Wallace are up against Australia's Damien Delgado and Chris Flavel in the Para-lawn bowls men's pairs B6-B8 showdown.

Australia had led 4-2 but Scotland have edged into a 5-4 lead after six ends.

A tweet of approval from Geraint Thomas, who has been following the lawn bowls as he continues his recovery from the Tour de France.

It was a tense finale, but Daniel Salmon and Jarrad Breen held their nerve to win gold for Wales.

Men's parallel bars gold medallist

Birmingham gymnast Joe Fraser told BBC One:

"We’ve got lion our on leotards and on our chests so I feel pride. I’m proud to say I managed to deliver a routine out there, alongside someone I consider as my brother, Giarnni (Regini-Moran).

“It’s his birthday today and we both went out there and gave it our all and managed to walk away with the one and two – it’s absolutely incredible.

“Being in this arena has filled me with so much joy and I just want to give so much more in my training. Every major I do, I feel that – that I want to give more and more and more.

“But this one has hit me so different, being in my hometown with a home crowd, delivering routine after routine. Yeah I made a mistake on the high bar but it’s swings and roundabouts, and performing out here has been one of my proudest moments to date."

The home nations managed eight judo medals between them last night at Coventry Arena, and that's the maximum amount they can come away with tonight.

We're in for a treat if the atmosphere is anything like it was in today's earlier session, when a trio of English protagonists whipped the crowd into a frenzy as Gemma Howell, Daniel Powell and Lachlan Moorhead booked a place in their respective finals.

All three go for gold this evening while Northern Ireland are eyeing three more bronze medals having secured two last night.

Keep an eye on Eoin Fleming, who has been waiting for this moment for eight years having lost his bronze medal match back at Glasgow 2014.

First up of the home nations though is Wales' Jasmine Hawker-Jones, who will be out very shortly looking to win bronze in the women's -63kg.

It might be easy to get a little bit sniffy sometimes about 'only' getting a bronze medal, but I wouldn't fancy giving it that patter in earshot of Scotland's men's 3x3 basketball quartet right now.

All four are on their haunches under the stands at Smithfield, exhausted and distraught after losing 13-12 to Canada in a tense encounter.

They've done well to finish fourth, Kyle Jimenez has just told BBC Sport Scotland, but that will do little to salve the pain at the moment.

Earlier, goals from Giselle Ansley, Tess Howard and Hannah Martin helped England to a 3-1 win over India in women's hockey.

Here's how they made it three wins out of three in Pool A.
