Solid start for England's Brodie Williams as he wins the first heat of the men's 200m backstroke in 1:57.88.

Williams is going for a medal double after claiming silver in the 100m backstroke on Saturday.

Aussie Bradley Woodward is second in 1:57.99 while Scotland's Craig McNally will have to wait to see if his third-placed time of 1:58.36 is enough to progress. Jersey's Isaac Dodds and Guernsey's Samuel Lowe came fifth and sixth respectively.

    Hockey

It's all over in the top-of-the-table women's Pool B match between Australia and New Zealand - and it's the Hockeyroos who leapfrog their rivals to the summit with a 1-0 win.

Kaitlin Nobbs' penalty strike after just eight minutes proved the difference in a game of very few chances although Australia did have to survive a late goalmouth scramble.

It's three wins out of three for the Aussies, while New Zealand slip to a first defeat but are still favourites to progress in second place. Scotland sit third but a 1-0 loss to New Zealand earlier in the group means they have it all to do.

There are 10 more gold medals up for grabs at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre on Tuesday - but all 10 finals take place during the evening session including Adam Peaty's quest for redemption in the men's 50m breaststroke.

This morning, meanwhile, it's all about the heats, beginning with the men's 200m backstroke where England's 100m silver medallist Brodie Williams (above) is eyeing the chance of a medal double while compatriot Luke Greenbank bids to add Commonwealth success to his Tokyo Olympics bronze.

Wales' Alys Thomas begins the defence of her 200m butterfly title, while England's Ben Proud will start his bid to retain the men's 50m freestyle crown - but 2018 men's 1,500 freestyle silver medallist Dan Jervis, of Wales, has been forced to pull out of his heat due to Covid.

We will have the mixed 4x100m medley relay heats too which are always good to watch. England and Scotland go head-to-head in heat two - three of the Olympic title-winning Great Britain team swim for England and one for Scotland.

The action is about to begin with the men's 200m backstroke heats scheduled for 10:30 BST.

Could England land a first clean sweep of the heptathlon medals? Based on pedigree, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Holly Mills and Jade O’Dowda should be right in contention.

Reigning champion Johnson-Thompson surrendered her world title in Oregon but felt she regained her desire after finishing eighth, 533 points behind the medal places and 759 adrift of the British record she set to become world champion three years ago.

“This time I actually feel I’ve got my hunger back,” she said afterwards. “I want to put in the work and get back to where I was. It’ll be motivation for me through the winter.”

Meanwhile, Mills says she is "definitely going for a gold medal" after she set a personal best and 2022 British-leading score of 6260 points in Gotzis at the end of May.

Though O’Dowda, 22, is making her major championship debut, she is ranked second in the Commonwealth this year with her personal best of 6,224 points in Bedford - a performance which included her best distances in the shot put and javelin.

'I couldn't have been happier or prouder'published at 10:03 British Summer Time 2 August 2022

    BBC One

It was a pep talk from her mother which inspired Laura Kenny before her gold-medal ride in the scratch race on Monday.

Kenny told BBC One's Breakfast show that she had been struggling for motivation in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games after her challenging year.

"It just felt like it had been a rollercoaster and then after the points race [in which Kenny finished 13th], I realised I just didn’t have it, I just didn’t have the legs to be in that bike race," she said.

"I went home and my mom and dad have been looking after [son] Albie for us and I just said to them, I don’t know whether this is it, I don’t know whether I’ve got it any more, whether I’ve got the motivation any more.

"And my mom was like ‘just go out and ride that bike race as if it is your last, just ride your socks off'.

"When I stepped onto the track I went in with a completely different mindset. I went in telling myself I was good enough, of course I was good enough – just because I didn’t have the legs I wanted or the legs I had at the Olympics, it didn’t mean I was rubbish all of a sudden.

"I just couldn’t have been happier or prouder when I crossed the finish line."
