Bethany Firth took Northern Ireland's first Commonwealth gold in the pool - and the nation's first at Birmingham 2022 - a little earlier on.

Six-time Paralympic champion Firth added Commonwealth gold to her collection in the 200m freestyle S14.

1500 metres. A long way to swim isn’t it? Four-and-a-half Eiffel Towers, nine-and-a-half Blackpool Towers, more or less a mile. You’d be looking at 60 lengths of your local baths.

Of course Australia will be favourites here with Sam Short and Kieran Pollard flying but Daniel Wiffen has designs on a medal for Northern Ireland after he became the first Irish swimmer to break the 15-minute barrier recently, clocking 14:57.66.

Reigning champion Stella Chesang is likely to be one of Eilish McColgan’s main challengers this evening, although the athlete from Uganda finished almost 30 seconds down on the Scot at the World Championships in July.

Irene Cheptai of Kenya has not really pulled up any trees yet this season either.

In sharp contrast to the women's 100m semi-finals, next up is a battle over 10,000m.

Nobody in this 14-strong field has run a 25-lap race quicker than Scotland’s Eilish McColgan.

Kenya’s silver and bronze medallists at the recent World Championships, Hellen Obiri and Margaret Kipkemboi aren’t in Brum, so could this be the perfect chance for McColgan to collect a first major title?

Her mum, Liz of course won gold over this distance at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 in Edinburgh and in 1990 in Auckland.

Daryll Neita does a little jig of delight. As well she might. An absolutely smoking 10.90 personal best, all long strides and loose, relaxed upper body.

She is the fastest into tonight's final. The 25-year-old hadn't been below 10 seconds before 2021. She has broken that barrier nine times since, including a windy-assisted 10.80 to win the British title in June.

In a world in which Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce is running PBs in her mid-thirties, there is still plenty of time for the Englishwoman to emerge as an international powerhouse. Maybe it is already happening in front of us.

A win over Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah in tonight's final at 21:45 BST would make it hard to deny.

Daryll Neita that is brilliant. The British champion sets a new PB with a run of 10.90 seconds and has clear daylight to Rosemary Chukwuma, who also qualifies automatically.

It's Mollie O'Callaghan who gets the silver ahead of fellow Aussie Kaylee McKeown.

Medi Harris was just 0.04 seconds away from a medal.

So far, so good for Joel Makin. The Welshman takes the first game 11-3.

Makin, who lives in Birmingham, reached the bronze medal final four years ago but has guaranteed himself a medal this time around.

New Zealand's Paul Coll, on the other hand, won silver at the last Commonwealths and 'Superman' will be looking to go one further at the 2022 Games. He's won five of his last six meetings with Makin.
