Night of dreams for Northern Irelandpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 3 August 2022

    Men's 1500m freestyle final

    Michael Morrow
BBC Sport NI at Sandwell Aquatics Centre

Unprecedented on a number of levels.

Daniel Wiffen smashes his PB by the guts of six seconds with a sensational 14:51.79.

It isn't gold, but for a country that had never won a medal in the pool before Birmingham, that'll do just fine.

Magnificent from Wiffen. Eireann Nugent has also booked her place in the quarter-finals of the boxing by the way, so that's five medals NI have guaranteed today - with Kate O'Connor lying second in the heptathlon with one event to go.

It's a night that will go down in history for 'our wee country'.

  2. silver medal

But what, what a swim from Daniel Wiffen of Northern Ireland who takes the silver and breaks his PB by six whole seconds.

Wow that's some effort! Luke Turley takes bronze for England.

I know just how much that will mean to Eilish McColgan. No wonder she is in tears, and she's not the only one...

The BBC Sport columnist has talked about the different feeling she has running for Scotland, how she is running for her home town, for the people she has known since she was a wean.

And, of course, she has that hinterland of her mum Liz and her Commonwealth Games achievements, winning this 10,000m race in 1986 in Edinburgh. Now she's matched her. Astonishing.

Mightily impressive from Sam Short who led from the off and comes away to win it in 14:48.54!

Gold medal - Scotland - Eilish McColganpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 3 August 2022

    Women's 10,000m final

    What. A. Finish.

Eilish McColgan is roared through the line by the crowd. That was some finish and she sets a new Games record in 30 minutes 48.60 seconds.

She had to grit her teeth and fight for that. The facials between her and Irene Cheptai down the home straight smack of pure pain.

Does McColgan have enough? She is just itching to go past and she probably has her mum's voice in her head - trust your kick, because you can kick.

Sam Short is starting to create a bit of daylight between himself and Daniel Wiffen, but the NI man is so, so far ahead of Luke Thomas Turley in third.

That podium is getting closer with every touch of the wall.

Sheila Kiprotich is looking really laboured just behind her. Is she carrying an injury?

Are we seeing two Kenyans and a Scot in what is quickly becoming a three-way battle?

McColgan has worked so hard to tire out the rest of the field and now she is in the fight for a medal if she can live with the two Kenyans Kiprotich and Cheptai.

The gap between them and the defending champion Chesang is becoming unbridgeable.

Wiffen goes for the podiumpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 3 August 2022

    Men's 1500m freestyle final

    Michael Morrow
BBC Sport NI at Sandwell Aquatics Centre

Daniel Wiffen became the first Northern Irish and Irish swimmer to break the 15-minute barrier in the 1500m at the World Championships in June.

His time of 14:57.66, if replicated tonight, would put him right in the frame for a medal. He was far slower in yesterday's heats by design, cruising through as the fourth-fastest qualifier.

A medal here would cap a sensational, unprecedented Games for NI's swimmers.
