Thankfully for all of the riders the weather has stayed dry today - particularly for the men with the extra lap and some of the twists and turns.

There's a lot of bends here - and research will play dividends.

Australia's Rohan Dennis is a two-time world champion and will set off immediately before Thomas at 14:28.

Scotland’s John Archibald, winner of silver on the track earlier this week, is off at 14:25, just before Dan Bigham, who broke the British national hour record previously set by Bradley Wiggins last October, at 14:26.

Mark Cavendish has left the Tour of Poland to focus his efforts on the Commonwealth Games, having completed five stages of the seven-stage race.

The Manx rider, 37, did not start Thursday's stage six as he looks ahead to Sunday's 160km road race around Warwick.

"I'm sorry to leave the boys and the race," said Cavendish. "But at the same time I'm looking forward to racing for the Isle of Man at this great event."

Cavendish won the Isle of Man's last Commonwealth gold medal in the scratch race at Melbourne in 2006, but he has not competed at the Games since 2010, where he finished seventh in the road race.

A well-executed inward 2 1/2 somersaults piked from James Heatly of Scotland moves him up to third and best from the home nations with one dive left.

72.00 for his fifth dive puts Jack Laugher up to fourth with Jordan Houlden in fifth.

These results will only count for tonight's diving order but if they're anything to go on there will be encouraging medal hopes for the home nations.

England's Gemma Richardson has moved into the semi-finals of the women's lightweight boxing tournament, meaning she will win at least bronze.

Richardson, who has won gold medals at both the Youth World Championships and European Youth Championships, produced a fine display to claim a 5-0 victory over Jade Burden - the first female boxer to compete at the Games from the Isle of Man.

Burden took a standing eight count in the second round but managed to reach the end of the contest, although Richardson recorded a wide victory on all five scorecards - 30-25, 30-25, 30-26, 30-26 and 30-27.

One of the slogans of these Commonwealth Games is 'sport is just the beginning'.

As well as putting on a show over the 11 days of action, organisers want to leave a lasting impact on Birmingham.

At various sports, they've got areas where fans can have a go themselves. The table tennis set-up is pretty cool.

They've got a speed gun to see how quick you can hit the ball and some target practice too.

Scotland's James Heatly is the best of the home nations so far and solidifies his spot in third after his third attempt.

Can Thomas recover from gruelling Tour?published at 13:37 British Summer Time 4 August 2022

    Men's time trial

Former champion Geraint Thomas said he was satisfied with his third-placed finish at this year's Tour de France, in which he "proved a few people wrong" with his overall third place.

The 36-year-old has endured a difficult few years, disrupted by crashes, injuries and bad luck.

Will he have enough left in his legs to take the Commonwealth Games time trial title today after his three gruelling weeks in France?

The second group will start to set off from 13:54 BST, with Thomas set for a 14:29 departure.

Walsh picks up a medal for the third Games in a rowpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 4 August 2022

    Boxing quarter-finals

For the third Commonwealth Games in a row, Northern Ireland's Michaela Walsh will collect a medal in boxing.

She has just defeated Keamogetse Kenosi of Botswana 5-0 to move into the semi-final in the women's featherweight division and guarantee herself at least a bronze medal.

Walsh already has two silvers to her name after losing to England's Nicola Adams in the 2014 flyweight final and then again to Australia's Skye Nicholson four years later at featherweight.

It could be a great day for the Walsh family as Michaela's brother Aidan also fights later on today, in the men's light-middleweight quarter-finals against Mohammed Akbar of England.
