Good afternoon from a scorching University of Birmingham, where England's women take on Australia for hockey gold under the beating sun in around 20 minutes time.England have won a medal at every Commonwealth Games hockey has been contested at - but never gold. Could today be the day to change that?

Australia, on the other hand, have won four of the last five Commonwealth finals. Like England, they have won all of their games in the tournament so far and only conceded one regular time goal between them, but they both needed shootouts to get through their semi-finals.

An unsurprisingly game effort from McNaul but she is well beaten by Zareen Nikhat of India in the final, who takes gold with a mightily impressive unanimous decision.

A second successive Commonwealths silver for McNaul, who underwent two surgeries and suffered a broken femur since the 2018 Games. All told, it's not a bad return from the east Belfast fighter.

We are into a decider as England's Ben Lane & Sean Vendy draw level with Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, taking the second game.

The NEC has been such a joyful arena throughout the netball.

But the same flattening feeling of defeat felt in yesterday's semi-final seems to be settling on the crowd again. It's a long way back for England in this final quarter.

Helen Housby is just receiving a bit of treatment on the bench, it looks like we're seeing some strapping going on her ankle.

Jo Harten, who has not looked very mobile herself in this tournament, is on at goal shooter and Ellie Cardwell has moved out to goal attack.

60km to go. It looks like it's game over for the peloton and Mark Cavendish.

The lead group of 15, featuring Wales' Geraint Thomas, England's Fred Wright, Sam Watson and Ben Turner, Scotland's Finn Crockett and Sean Flynn, Northern Ireland's Matthew Teggart, the Isle of Man's Ben Swift and Guernsey's Sam Culverwell, now hold a four minute 40 second lead over the main group.

Scotland's Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart have dug on to win the second set and level with England's Adrian Walker and Daryl Selby. It's a testy encounter, this, with Lobban especially right into it. A tense decider is coming right up...

• Boxing: 16 titles are being decided across the day at Birmingham's NEC, with plenty of home nations interest.
• Hockey: England face Australia for hockey glory in the women's gold medal match at 15:00.
• Beach volleyball: Joaquin and Javier Bello will attempt to make history by becoming the first England team to win a Commonwealth medal in beach volleyball.
• Diving: At the diving, the men move up to the 10m platform, which features England's Matthew Dixon and Noah Williams, while the women's 3m springboard has Scotland's Grace Reid.
• Netball: Australia meet Jamaica for the gold medal at 20:30.

Northern Ireland's Carly McNaul is really up against it versus India's Zareen Nikhat in the light-flyweight final.

Nikhat is world light-bantamweight champion and dropped down for the Commonwealths, but still packs a lot of power. She takes the first round 5-0 on the judges cards, McNaul is going to have to get on the inside if she wants to find any joy in this one.

Ellie Cardwell sinks her shot, screaming and clapping to encourage her team. That is more like the England we have become accustomed to seeing - fired up, up for it.

There are four minutes left on the clock, can England close the gap enough to set up an exciting final quarter?

Players have been loose about the definition of 'non-contact sport' all week at the netball.

England captain Nat Metcalf takes a shove so strong it sends her sliding on her back across the floor.

The crowd boos, naturally.

Good pressure from Geva Mentor and she forces the turnover. England manage to take it to goal and they need a few more of those to be back within touching distance.

YES - Imogen Allison is there to pick up the fumbled Silver Ferns ball on the next centre pass and just like that England are within four goals.

It has been a tight first game between Malaysia's Aaron Chen and Soh Wooi Yik and England's Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. Nip and tuck throughout but it is Malaysia with one foot in the gold medal match, taking the first game 21-18.
