One down, four to play. We move on to Lord's on Saturday for game two. Australia deserved winners today. I'll leave the final words to Henry Morgan...

  3. Man of the match

Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, who scored 71 off 50 balls and took three catches: "Me and Mitchell (Marsh) just knuckled down and took our innings deep. I thought we might have been 10 or 15 runs under but our bowlers did well. It's great to be back in the team, I'm just trying to take my confidence into this series and play as well as I can."

Sumant Singh Bhatia: The difference between the teams was that Australia got the ball to reverse swing - BIG advantage to bat first

  5. Captain's reaction

Australia captain Steven Smith: "I thought the boys played nicely. We had a little hiccup in the middle order but Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh did well to get us to that score. With the new ball it came on nice but it was two-pace when the ball got older. We knew we would have to bowl well and we did that.

"This sort of attack has done well for us over a while. We are number one in the world so we have been doing a lot of things right. But you have to assess the conditions.

"We have to recover tonight, drive to London tomorrow and we are looking forward to playing at Lord's."

  6. Captain's reaction

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We lost it in the 10 or 15 overs in the middle of the chase where Australia bowled pretty well. We got off to a fantastic start and when we get off to a start like that we should be chasing down 305.

"We'll look back at our plans and execution and try and improve for Lord's. I was pleased with Adil Rashid, he has come on in leaps and bounds. For him to come out and hold his nerve, I was very impressed."

Alex Meissner: An enjoyable contest today but, once again, Australia's death bowling is something England need to replicate. From 193-6 to 305-6 tells me Australia have the calmness to bat at will, whereas England have crumbled. It still makes for a fascinating ODI contest!

  16. Australia win by 59 runs

It promised to be a dramatic finish. It looked at one stage that England were heading for victory. But some poor shot choices, coupled with some good middle-innings bowling from Australia, has given the tourists victory. Even Shane Watson bowled pretty well.

    Steven Finn runs

Steven Finn and Mark Wood eek out a few more singles but this does them no good. Finn is attempting a few heaves but missing. There is a very good reason he is last man in.

  22. Eng 241-9 (65 runs needed off 36 balls)

Poor Steven Finn is getting some treatment from the Australian pace attack. Pat Cummins follows him with a short ball but the big England man copes well. Cummins tries to repeat the trick but Finn stays where he is and England get a wide. If Pat can throw in 50 more of those, the home side might have a chance.

  29. WICKET

    Moeen c Marsh b Cummins 17 (Eng 232-9)

    Pat Cummins celebrates

Game over. Moeen looks to pull a short Pat Cummins ball but it is too quick for him and he skies it for Mitchell Marsh to catch on the leg side. It will be a miracle if England win this now.

  30. Eng 229-8

    Moeen Ali and Pat Cummins

Mark Wood is in and with only Steven Finn to come you feel like this is a game England are going to lose now. However, Moeen Ali is class and Wood is a fighter. He edges a quick Mitchell Starc ball to bring a very welcome four before his partner drives for another boundary. England will need plenty more of those.

  31. WICKET

    Rashid c Wade b Starc 11 (Eng 220-8)

    Adil Rashid

Just as England were starting to build a tiny bit of belief, Australia strike to bring an air of doom rushing back in. Mitchell Starc pitches up and Adil Rashid edges to Matthew Wade.

  32. Eng 220-7

Pat Cummins is back, no doubt with the intention of blowing the tail away. Moeen has other ideas, though, and hits the ball straight back over the bowler's head for four. He then launches another for two into the off side. The Worcestershire man is such a big asset coming in at seven, especially in these circumstances. Can he do this for England?

  33. Eng 211-7 (need 95 off 66)

Mitchell Starc bowls to Moeen Ali

These two were England's best bowlers and now it's their chance to be England's best batsmen. Moeen has won many admirers with the willow this summer, and it's easy to see why when he plays a straight drive off Mitchell Starc for four.

Ben Fox: 3... 2... 1... Cue the Buttler critics... Probably the same people that wanted Lyth in the Test team and now want him out.

Charles Duncan: Bet England wish they had Willey batting at 9 now, huh?

  35. Eng 206-7 (100 to win off 72 balls)

Adil Rashid gets a bit of luck with a toe edge that flies past Matthew Wade for four. Every run is welcome right now by England. The Yorkshire player steers a subsequent ball with greater purpose to a similar area for two more.

  36. Text 81111

Phill in York: Re. James Taylor batting in Tests. My solution all summer has been Moeen to open with Cook. He has seen off the second new ball many times now. Can play constructively or expansively. The solution is staring us in the face. Then the option of Taylor (or sticking with Lyth) becomes easier to manage down the order. Thoughts?

  37. Eng 199-7 (target 306)

Nathan Coulter-Nile helps England out with a wide, but they will need more than that. Adil Rashid is capable, which he shows with a checked drive through cover for four. It would be a stunning win from here for England.

  38. Hat-trick ball

    Eng 194-7

    Nathan Coulter-Nile

There's no extra catchers for the hat-trick ball, which is a low full toss and Adil Rashid gets a leading edge which drops to safety.

    Nathan Coulter-Nile celebrates

Three wickets in four balls and Nathan Coulter-Nile is on a hat-trick. He's ripped the heart out of the England batting with this double strike, Chris Woakes chasing a short ball down leg and feathering behind.

He was man of the match in the semi-final and final of the Champions Trophy in 2009. Don't recall many smiles since then.

  44. Eng 194-5 (112 needed off 84 balls)

Moeen Ali is the new man. He is more than capable but he pats back another dot with his first ball. Every ball is vital now as that run-rate edges up. Well done Shane Watson, though. That has not been said often this summer.

Did you know Nathan Coulter-Nile's nickname is River? You do now...

  52. Eng 183-4 (need 123 off 96)

    Eoin Morgan

The innings played by Matthew Wade for Australia is looking more and more important as this game goes on. England need a similar effort from one of their players. Will it be Eoin Morgan? Maybe. He plants one foot and hammers the first ball from the returning Shane Watson over mid-off for four - the most significant blow of a decent over. That'll be drinks.

  53. Eng 176-4 (need 130 off 102)

England's chances of victory are now rated at just 21% according to WASP, which is based on a par score set by the commentators at the ground and then takes into account how previous run chases have unfolded from this position. Jos Buttler is England's new batsman and he fails to see a Mitchell Starc yorker from round the wicket. He's a lick of paint away from having his off stump splattered.

  56. WICKET

    Stokes c Burns b Starc 13 (Eng 172-4)

    Mitchell Starc celebrates

I'm handing that wicket to Australia captain Steve Smith for perfect fielding placing - Ben Stokes trying to whip Mitchell Starc through the leg side but hammering it straight to the man at short mid-wicket.

  57. Eng 172-3

    Ben Stokes

England are getting bogged down here and it is giving encouragement to Australia. Ben Stokes looks to change that by hammering a short Glenn Maxwell ball to the midwicket boundary. Stokes is hitting it very hard but is picking out fielders with frustrating regularity.

  58. Eng 165-3 (need 141 more to win)

Pat Cummins is taking time between deliveries to sign autographs for local schoolchildren. His fast bowler partner in crime Mitchell Starc is trying to blast into the England middle and lower order but Ben Stokes stands firm, reducing the target with a single into the leg side.

Nothing else risky from Ben Stokes, who drives for a single to deep cover. No run from the last ball.

  62. Umpire review

  64. Eng 161-3 (Morgan 19, Stokes 3)

Ben Stokes does away with the tubular bandages when batting, so it must be of some use when he's bowling. Happy to play himself in, he drives a single down the ground - Steve Smith's sprawling stop preventing a boundary. Just that single from Michell Starc's first over back in the attack.

  67. Eng 160-3 (target 306)

The Aussies are interested again now. Nathan Coulter-Nile has an extra zip in his step and he finds a good line for four balls before Eoin Morgan decides he has had enough and comes to plant a drive over mid-on, one bounce for four. The captain knows it is his turn to take responsibility for this chase.

    Australia players celebrate

Should we assume from Shane Watson's send-off that he doesn't like batsmen charging him? Does he still think he's sending them down at 88mph? Ben Stokes is the new batsman, with Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali to come. Still no need for England to worry.

  71. WICKET

    Taylor b Watson 49 (Eng 152-3)

James Taylor is bowled by Shane Watson

Taylor goes. After inside edging Shane Watson to fine leg for four he dances down again and is cleaned up. Stupid shot. Watson scowls and offers some choice words as the batsman departs. That was a shot born of over-confidence. Class it in the same bracket as Jason Roy - unnecessary.

Oh, luck for Eoin Morgan, who inside edges one off Pat Cummins just past his own stumps and then past Matthew Wade for four. That could not have been closer. We're talking millimetres. It may even have clipped the stump. It keeps the scoreboard moving, though.

  81. Who does Blowers look like?

Henry Blofeld's purple attire today (see 44th over of Australia innings) has provoked plenty of lookalikes...

  82. Eng 128-2 (Taylor 34, Morgan 4)

"But, runs now appear somewhat harder to come by as the task changes for England, who now must look to build another solid partnership.

"The crowd also sense this is an important period. Despite the rather chilly evening (eight degrees Celsius by some reports), not many are leaving their seats."

  88. Eng 116-2

There is a lot more energy about the Australian field now. They've been given an inch and are eager to take a mile. They are nearly given another wicket but George Bailey's throw is not taken cleanly by Matthew Wade and James Taylor, who would have been miles out, is able to get home. The England opener has been positive throughout his innings but that was a shot too many as he looks to loft a drive over the off-side field and miscues his effort to Warner at point. Jason Roy

Roy continues to play the aggressor. He latches on to short balls from Mitchell Marsh but doesn't quite connect and has to settle for a couple of twos. Taylor succeeds where Roy fails, pulling powerfully and just beating the diving Joe Burns at backward square. England pass 100.

  101. Don't look down on Taylor

People slight James Taylor because of his size but, as Simon Hughes points out in this piece, being short can bring advantages to a batsman...

  102. Eng 94-1 (Target 306)

Jason Roy is not one for being dictated to. He scores another boundary with a back-foot punch through midwicket off Mitchell Marsh. It is clearly rubbing off on James Taylor, who gets in on the action by dancing down to hammer the ball back over Marsh's head for six. With Marsh towering over Taylor, that is David v Goliath stuff. Well, if you live by the sword, you die by it as well. Alex Hales rocks back to an average short ball and looks to pull but succeeds only in hammering it straight down Shane Watson's throat at midwicket. That is about as good as it has got for Watson in this game. First blow for England in their response. The big question is how will they respond? James Taylor has a cracking platform to build on.

  113. Eng 70-0 (Target 306)

First signs that the pace of Pat Cummins and the light - which is that odd combination of fading natural combined with floodlight - could cause the batsmen some problems as Alex Hales plays the wrong line and misses. No problem for Jason Roy, though, who steers a short straight ball down to the third-man boundary for four before swivelling on another to help the ball fine for a boundary. Another bowling change sees Mitchell Marsh come in to the attack. He's another broad-shouldered unit. Jason Roy shows a lovely touch to deftly flick the second ball fine for four. The opening batsman follows it up with another shot to leg, which he tucks between fine and square leg. Roy ends the over on 40 - his highest ever ODI score, amassed from 42 balls. 128. Eng 20-0

What a crazy three balls. Mitchell Starc's first ball is not that full but there is width and Alex Hales is on it in a flash driving square for four. Hales then has a moment of madness, taking a quick single to Glenn Maxwell, who would have run the batsman out if he had hot with a throw to the non-strikers' end. The next ball? Shane Warne said he only ever bowled two deliveries - a leggie and a straight one - but he'd tell everyone who would listen that he had six or seven variations so that the batsman would get tied up in looking for any subtle deliveries in the run-up and delivery. These two at the wicket know a lot rests on their partnership so they knock the ball into gaps and Mitchell Marsh ends the over by chipping to the extra cover boundary.

    Shane Watson

Watson's tour took another turn for the worst with his failed football antics to try and boot the ball away from his stumps in the T20 but he has a chance to do something positive for his side here in conjunction with Maxwell. The pair start their building process with singles as Wood works his way through his seventh over. England's wickets have been timely.

  198. Aus 182-4 (Aus won toss)

Before today, the last Australian batsman to be dismissed in an ODI by Adil Rashid was Michael Clarke in 2009. The Yorkie has waited a long time for a second chance at international cricket. However, he now has his second four-wicket haul for England of the summer.

Shane Watson is the new man at the crease. Get the quicks on, Eoin. And get ready, umps.

At the other end, Glenn Maxwell looks a little embarrassed as he plays all around a nicely-floated turner. He recovers to end the over with a cut shot which brings three.

"Smith smashed his pad with his bat. He just had to play it straight. It was a full toss and dipped so he ended up dragging it. That is a good breakthrough for England as Smith was looking ominous. This is what the leggie can give you - the option of wickets during the middle overs."

    Adil Rashid and Jason Roy

The full toss is becoming a key part of Adil Rashid's armoury today - he gets a second wicket with the delivery when Steve Smith tries to go downtown but picks out Ben Stokes running round to cow corner. Big wicket that... Australia will have wanted Smith to bat through to allow a solid platform for the big hitters to come.

  206. Aus 164-2

The projected score suggests that eight an over from here gets Australia 315. They will want more than that with so many wickets in the tent and the likes of Maxwell and Marsh to come. Smith looks to get his side motoring and dances own to hammer Rashid over long-on for six.

    George Bailey

Moeen is the holder, Rashid the aggressor in this England attack. The leggie offers a half-hearted appeal for lbw against Bailey but the umpire isn't interested. The batsman then latches on to a full ball and hammers the first six of the innings into cow corner. That ending releases the pressure that was building nicely for England. Wickets needed for the home side or they'll be chasing a big un.

Who pays the electricity bill at Hampshire? They'll be fuming. More one and twos from Australia who, from looking at 350 earlier, might have revised their expectations.

  213. Aus 135-2

    David Warner

Warner's dismissal was a testimony to the pressure England have built. They have been patient - not a quality England teams of the past have possessed in abundance. Australia almost lose another wicket as Smith just makes his ground - courtesy of half of his boot - so that Steven Finn's throwing down of the wickets at the non-strikers' end doesn't end his innings. 216. Aus 132-1

Moeen is doing a fine job for England. He is halfway through his 10 and has gone for just 19. England have a man in short and straight to Warner on the leg side, looking to cut off a scoring avenue and frustrate him out. He takes a quick one to Morgan, who is deeper in the leg side and shys but misses as the opener scampers home.

    Joe Burns

You can be forgiven for not knowing who Joe Burns is, as this is only his fourth international match in any format (two Tests and two ODIs). However, as one of Australia's most promising batsmen, Test and ODI recognition has long been in the offing for the 25-year-old. Burns scored 140 on his Sheffield Shield debut in the 2010-11 season and hit 69 a week ago on his ODI debut against Ireland. Not as explosive as Aaron Finch, whose injury left the opener spot free, but more than capable of providing a fitting foil for David Warner at the top of the Aussie order.

And don't get me started on James Taylor. A consistent and classy performer who deserves to stay at number three for an extended period.

Paul Mitchell: After T20 match demoting Moeen and dropping Willey makes zero sense. MA should be in top 3 instead of Roy or Taylor, DW at 8.

Chris Jones: Moeen down at 7! Should be opening or 3. Below Buttler who is out of nick is madness.

Martin Davies: Why on earth are England reverting back towards their World Cup team? What happened to the brave new dawn?

"England make four changes from their last ODI, a three-wicket victory against New Zealand to clinch that series 3-2 at Chester le Street in case you couldn't think back that far.

"One of them is the match-winner from that day, Jonny Bairstow, who is absent from the squad this time as Jos Buttler returns from the injury that ruled him out back in June.

"Bit of a surprise in the bowling as Chris Woakes is favoured ahead of David Willey, while Sam Billings makes way for the returning Moeen Ali and James Taylor slots in at three for the rested Joe Root."

    Eoin Morgan and Steve Smith

Australia are the favourites with the bookmakers, but you won't get a very good price on England - which is madness when you consider that Steve Smith's men are the world champions and, in the same tournament, Eoin Morgan's side were knocked out at the first hurdle.

But impressive performances against New Zealand earlier in the summer and a change in conditions levels the playing field for tonight.

"Australia name the same team which beat Ireland at Stormont last month. However, it looks like they'll be some changes in the batting order. Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh exchange places while Pat Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile do the same.

"There are just five surviving members of the side which beat New Zealand in the World Cup final back in March: Warner, Smith, Maxwell, Watson and Starc."

sam: No Billings? Why change a successful team?!

DrHolmes: c'mooon Moeen is wasted down at 7.

  297. Australia's final chance

Of course, this is the final format in which Australia have a chance to win a series before they head down under. The Ashes are safely in England's hands and the solitary T20 played between the two sides on Monday was won by Eoin Morgan's men.

  298. Captain's view

England captain Eoin Morgan: "The wicket doesn't change a lot here. We probably would have batted first.

"We needed a sixth bowler and Moeen Ali is out best option for an all-rounder. James Taylor is in for Joe Root and hopefully he can carry on where Joe left off.

"You might see a lot of slower bowling in the last 10 overs because of the new regulations."

  299. Captain's view

Australia captain Steve Smith: "It looks a pretty good wicket, it is pretty dry and they are playing two spinners so hopefully we can get them out of the game early.

"We are confident in the way we play one-day cricket. The boys are looking to start well."

  300. Teams

    James Taylor

A bit of team news for you - England bring in James Taylor to bat at number three and Moeen Ali is down to come in at number seven. We'll also get our first look at Chris Woakes in international cricket this summer.

Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, David Willey and Joe Root are the men to step aside from the last ODI which England played.

Australia: Warner, Burns, Smith, Bailey, Maxwell, Watson, Wade, M Marsh, Starc, Coulter-Nile, Cummins.

England: Roy, Hales, Taylor, Morgan, Stokes, Buttler, Moeen, Rashid, Woakes, Wood, Finn.

    The toss

Australia win the toss and will bat first...

  302. Boundaries, bails & bouncers

And today, the world champions are in town for the beginning of a five-match series.

Expect big things and, as England skipper Eoin Morgan bluntly put it, an end to the "dull cricket" of the past.

If England are going to go down in this series, it's going to be in a hail of boundaries, bails and - mainly for my alliteration purposes - bouncers.

  303. Afternoon!

Remember those days of 50-over cricket where England worked to a template?

Solid openers, nurdlers in the middle order and then one or two who could give it a good whack at the back end of the innings?

Those days are gone. You can only watch them on VHS, DVD or via the internet.

This is a brave new world for England in T20 cricket - one where totals of 400 are possible and where big-hitting batsman follows big-hitting batsman...
