Summary

  • Debutant Jess Jonassen 95 not out

  • Anya Shrubsole takes four wickets

  • Australia were 95-5 before fightback

  • Australia lead multi-format series 4-2

  • 4pts for Test win, 2pts for a draw

  1. Australia 59-0 (Bolton 24, Villani 29)published at 12:14

Lucky for Nicole Bolton. With debutant Georgia Elwiss replacing the excellent Katherine Brunt, Bolton gets an inside edge and looks around frantically hoping to see if her wicket is still intact. It is, but only just. Hands on heads from English fielders. The frustration increases as Villani later adds a four to the total.

The television cameras again pick out Mitchell Starc, who again fails to raise a smile. Can't think why he is not too happy.

  2. Australia 54-0 (Bolton 23, Villani 25)published at 12:11

As Stuie says, England have done well with the ball, probing, missing the bat and unlucky not to get an early wicket. But you get the feeling Australia have weathered the storm and are starting to impose themselves on this match. Nicole Bolton clips Kate Cross to deep square for four to bring up Australia's 50. It is 54-0 after 16 overs.

Stuie Neale:, external Been a great start by English bowlers. I have been glued to this series. It's a good watch.

  4. Australia 47-0 (Bolton 19, Villani 23)published at 12:03

Elyse Villani cuts one away for four to move her on to 23. Not normally a total to mention, but it is her highest Test score of her career, although, to be fair, she is only playing in her second Test match.

But Katherine Brunt keeps it tight for the rest of the over, and has very impressive figures of 8-3-23-0. On another day that last figure would not be reading zero. How much longer can she go on for though before she comes out of the attack?

  5. Australia 43-0published at 11:57

There are signs of sloppiness coming in from the England players. A misfield at cover gifts Elyse Villani her fourth boundary of the match. Nicole Bolton also scores a boundary as 10 runs come off the over. Australia are starting to look a bit dangerous and England will be starting to get anxious and feel they need to break this partnership soon.

  7. Australia 33-0 (Bolton 14, Villani 14)published at 11:55

As Charles says, it has been a fine opening spell from Katherine Brunt, but she will not be happy with her efforts in the 13th over of the match. Nicole Bolton punches the first ball of the over away to the boundary with a further three runs also coming off the over.

  9. Australia 25-0 (Bolton 8, Villani 12)published at 11:51

So a reminder of how the Women's Ashes series works. It is a combination of three one-day internationals, this one and only Test and then three T20 matches. England won the opening ODI by four wickets then lost the next two, by 63 and 89-run margins.

Two points went to the winner of each ODI, so Australia hold a 4-2 lead with four points on offer to the winners of this Test.

  10. Australia 25-0 (Bolton 8, Villani 12)published at 11:45

Elyse Villani rocks back on to the back foot and pulls it away in front of square for four, despite Laura Marsh's valiant attempt to stop it. That's the only scoring shot of the over and Australia are starting to get the scoreboard moving after a tough few overs from the England bowlers. It could be a long day for the hosts.

It is our first look of the day at 23-year-old Lancashire bowler Kate Cross. She has only taken one wicket in the two one-day games she has played in this Ashes series. Two runs come off her first over, to take Australia to 21-0 off 10 overs. A solid, if unspectacular start, from the Australians.

This is a hugely impressive opening spell from Katherine Brunt. Yet again she asks an lbw question, but once again does not get the wicket. It was probably nipping over the top. She then gets one to swing back, only just missing Villani's off stump. Another maiden over from Brunt, who is unlucky to have not picked up an early wicket.

“A fair few Australia fans have turned up in Kent today and there is a sort of positivity amongst them, with one fan claiming if their side get to Friday and lose it will still be a marked improvement on their male counterparts' efforts.

“The crowd are still making their way in but the first rendition of Jerusalem is belted out half an hour into the innings by one of the members of the Barmy Army and still receives generous applause despite skewing off key as it comes to end.”

We've all been there. When the radar is not working as well as we would have hoped. And it is a moment for Anya Shrubsole to forget as she bowls it wide, very, very wide. Wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor flings herself to her right but can't get anywhere near it as the balls races away for four wides.

"After these two there is a lot of batting to come. It is important to get one of these two out or Australia could really lay into England later."

  18. Australia 14-0 (Brunt 0-8, Shrubsole 0-6)published at 11:23

Mitchell Starc has not had the best of summers. And the Australia paceman doesn't look too happy when he is captured by the television cameras. But, at least he does not have to worry about playing today. He is an interested spectator at Canterbury as fiance Alyssa Healy is the Australian wicketkeeper.

Australia move on to 14-0, Villani punching one away to the square leg boundary off a short delivery from Katherine Brunt.

"Bolton is falling over slightly. She needs to try to hit straight. I think early doors in your innings you really need to settle in and save the big shots until later."

Katherine Brunt is in the mood today. She again appeals for lbw against Nicole Bolton, but again umpire Alex Wharf refuses to raise his finger. Only three balls later Wharf again denies Brunt, this time Villani is the one who survives. Three runs scored off the over, but an encouraging start for England. It has been a good line and length from the English bowlers, and the tourists have struggled to find the middle of the bat.
