  1. Farewell

Right then. I'm not going to say that the first session in the morning is crucial, but...

We're signing off now, but keep an eye out for our report on the day's play and a Jonathan Agnew column.

We're back tomorrow for an earlier than anticipated start as we look to make up for time lost to the rain. So, play starts at 7:30 GMT and we'll be kicking off at 7:15 GMT. See you then!

  2. Player's view

South Africa bowler Dale Steyn, who has 3-29, on Sky Sports: "I've been wanting to get back for a while now after being injured in India. To bowl 16 overs, I'm pretty happy with how things went today.

"You always want to get the first wicket, especially if that's the captain. It felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. I was very excited - just to get going and spark the team a little bit. That's my role.

"The match is kind of even. We would have loved to take a wicket or two more. That big partnership put a dampener on our side but they didn't get away from us.

"Hopefully we can put them under pressure tomorrow. If we can hit our straps tomorrow morning hopefully things will happen for us."

Will Lindley-Nash: People were not complaining when Trott spent hours at the crease at number 3. Compton is doing a great job.

  4. Player's view

England batsman James Taylor, who made 70, on Sky Sports: "It's never ideal getting out, but so late in the day and with it getting dark, it was frustrating to say the least.

"On a whole we're pretty happy with where we're at. The way Compo applied himself was excellent. The conditions couldn't have been more perfect for the South Africa bowlers.

"I was trying to be as busy as possible and as positive as possible. I couldn't let Steyn settle."

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa might have been thinking it would be a great day after they had got three wickets, but it's been England's day, even though they lost Taylor at the end. England will be pretty happy with that tonight. I don't think they are in a winning position, but they're in a nice position. At 49-3 they might just have gone under. But they didn't."

Garth Dowson, in reply to Roland Denham's question about where the ball is kept overnight, writes...

"As an umpire who prides himself on being immaculate on the field of play, the last place a wet ball would go is in my pocket! Generally will live in the umpires room, locked up."

  11. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Compton is under a lot of pressure. He plays cautiously. But if someone gets us through a difficult period, I'm all for it. He solidified the possible hiccup England could have had and sealed one end. I don't care about strike-rates in Test cricket."

Rachel T: Well played England - intense contests need intense participants. Steyn v Compton!

Puv Samra: I bet South Africa would have loved to have had someone like Compton for the India series.

  13. Post update

Dale Steyn was the pick of the Proteas bowling attack. He bowled with pace and hostility to finish with figures of 15.1-3-29-3 for the day.

David Jones: In the era of batting collapses Nick Compton is exactly what we need - steady, focused and immovable rock at number three.

  15. Post update

Nick Compton ended the day 63 not out off 179 balls, but James Taylor was dmissied around 15 minutes before the close when he feathered the irrepressible Dale Steyn behind.

  16. 'Hales must tighten up'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Hales played a poor shot on his debut - he aimed an extravagant shot at a wide ball. It was a sucker ball. That's the way he plays. But it's that sort of ill discipline that will find out at this level. He has to take a little more care and attention with his defence. We won't judge him after one innings, but if he keeps getting out like that he'll have a very short Test career."

  17. Post update

When Joe Root was out lbw to rookie off-spinner Dane Piedt, England were 49-3.

However, County Championship stalwarts Nick Compton and James Taylor stepped up to the plate.

They gradually blunted the South Africa attack to record patient half-centuries.

  18. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"It was all about the pitch in the morning because it looked an uninviting time to be batting. When England were finally put in to bat, the pitch didn't play that badly."

  19. Post update

South Africa won the toss - I don't think One Direction had been formed when Alastair Cook last won one of those - and asked England to bat first.

Cook fenced at one from Dale Steyn and was out for a duck, while Alex Hales was caught behind.

  20. Post update

And what a day it's been. Proper cricket, if you like.

It's been more hard-fought than a night out in Wigan, but England just about have their noses in front.

  21. Bad light stops play

That's your lot, everyone. England march off for the day having scored 179-4 in the 65.1 overs possible because of rain delays.

An excellent question, Roland. Does anyone know the answer?

  25. Eng 175-4

Ben Stokes is off the mark with a single into the off side. The Durham man has been clubbing runs for fun in the warm-up games and seems to relish the quicker wickets of the southern hemisphere. He just has to stick around tonight, though.

  26. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"It's one of those where if you bowl that ball often enough in the corridor, you create enough pressure for people to make a mistake. Taylor played a nice innings - it's a slow pitch, you don't get full value for your shots, so I thought he worked very well."

  27. Post update

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC Test Match Special

"Taylor can barely drag himself away. He walks off, head down. He has played really well but there's no maiden Test century. It was an innocuous ball."

  28. WICKET

    Taylor c De Villiers b Steyn 70 (Eng 174-4)

Dale Steyn of South Africa celebrates taking the wicket of James Taylor

A superb knock is ended by a champion fast bowler. While the rest of his team-mates seemed to have their mind on dinner reservations, Dale Steyn had other ideas and delivers a little tempter which James Taylor nibbles into the hands of the keeper. Ben Stokes is the new man to the crease.

  29. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"What a piece of timing. For all the money in Durban you just thought he was trying to flat-bat that along the ground. But it sailed away..."

  30. Eng 174-3 (Taylor 70 off 134)

Dean Elgar is bowling some rubbish. He drops short to James Taylor, and the man with the bulging biceps muscles a maximum over mid-wicket.

  34. Eng 163-3 (Taylor 63, Compton 59)

The Kingsmead pitch is a dirty dark brown in colour and looks to be holding enough moisture to keep the bowlers interested. England are taking few chances so close to the cut-off time of 16:00 GMT. Just some good running between the wickets.

  35. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Morne Morkel has got other strings to his bow, but in South Africa he reverts to type and bangs it into the middle of the pitch. He's more of a caught-behind man than a leg-before man."

  43. Eng 154-3 (Taylor 61, Compton 52)

That's either stunning judgement of his off stick, or Nick Compton just got away with one. He leaves the ball on length - Mike Hussey-like - but the cherry sails perilously close to knocking over the yellow stumps. The bowler, Morne Morkel, can't believe it.

  44. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"England have dug themselves out of a hole. However, when we played here in 2009, batting was very easy on days two and three when we batted - and we won."

  45. Eng 153-3 (Elgar 3-1-5-0)

Dean Elgar took four wickets in the first innings of the first Test in South Africa's recent tour of India, including Che Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. He's no mug.

He grunts as he releases the ball, like a tennis player returning a heavy serve, but Nick Compton is on easy street. Just a single.

  49. Eng 152-3 (run-rate: 2.71)

James Taylor is such a powerful pocket dynamo. He brings up the 100 partnership, off 227 balls, with a crunching cut through point. He's got Popeye-like muscles - and it shows in his ability to wallop a cricket ball.

"The South Africans just seem to be willing to sit back and let something happen here."

  56. Eng 144-3 (Compton 48, Taylor 56)

Am I allowed to say that there's comparisons to be drawn between James Taylor and Joe Root? Like Root, Taylor is busy at the crease, runs well between the wickets, has a solid defence and appears to have an appetite for runs. South Africa have run into a brick wall here. England's middle order hasn't been this solid since Paul Collingwood hung up his blocker.

"Compton's bound to feel extra pressure because he's been left out, he's got back and he'll be wanting to make some runs and keep his place. But his natural inclination to be more defensive."

  62. Eng 142-3 (Compton 46, Taylor 55)

  67. Eng 138-3 (partnership 89)

Ben Stokes is the next man in and he's caught napping by the television cameras. He retained his dignity though - no wide-open mouth, sticky out tongue or saliva dripping from his chin. It feels like England are beginning to play for the light now. Nothing silly, take the singles when they can.

  68. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"I can see the problems with England's batting. Some of them have been found out in their techniques. You can't go on having collapses and keep expecting to win Test matches. They've been inconsistent.

  69. Eng 136-3 (Compton 45 off 128)

Kyle Abbott looks like somebody who might have played for Wimbledon in the early nineties. I don't know what it is, but he looks like he's had a few pints down the years with Mick Harford, Alan Cork and Vinnie Jones.

He's a good bowler, mind. As third seamers go, there can't be many better. He's angling the ball back into the right-handers. Just one from the over.

  71. Eng 135-3 (Steyn 11-3-24-2)

I'm glad Dale Steyn has consigned the long hair and headbands to the dustbin of history. It just detracted from his menace.

Nick Compton looks like he's going nowhere fast. He's playing a fine hand, and is only denied a cover boundary by some typically athletic South African fielding.

    Eng 133-3

    James Taylor celebrates his 50

Dale Steyn is sporting a fluorescent pink strip on his elbow. Like he wore it for a party and has forgotten to take it off. He's tearing in, sending the ball down at around 93mph. Not that James Taylor is too bothered. He drives the fast bowler down the ground to bring up another half-centry.

  101. Tea

    Eng 121-3 (40 overs)

A boundary, England's first for 10 overs, as Taylor gets down on one knee to sweep Piedt powerfully. And another one, making room to cut through point. A scarcely believable 10 off the over and the worry lines on Hashim Amla's face grow a tad more pronounced. And that will be tea.

A finger stinger. Morkel extracts lift from this pitch and Taylor is struck on the bat handle or bottom hand as he blocks. But he's still there.

  108. Eng 101-3 (36.1 overs)

Morne Morkel returns to the attack, Compton pulls a single to take England to three figures and wicketkeeper AB de Villiers takes one on the body as he tries to collect the throw from the outfield. It's notable only because South Africa have been so tidy in the field today.

Paul Hawkins: This partnership is Taylor-made, straight outta Compton.

Scott Fowler: Compton has many Trott-like qualities. If he turns out a run machine like Trott then it's a big bonus for England.

Shamim Miah: Players dropped by England often return with big performance & determined. Both Compton and Taylor looking good.

  110. Eng 99-3 (Compton 31, Taylor 28)

Taylor unfurls a deft paddle-sweep before Compton brings up the fifty stand with another single. Well batted, chaps. Tea is 20 minutes away. Can they make it?

  111. From the press box

  112. Eng 97-3 (35 overs)

The fair-haired Van Zyl, a solid-looking character who you suspect would be a handy rugby player, continues with his probing line on or outside off stump. Compton treats him much like he would a bowling machine: front foot forward, firm drive, admire the shot, no run.

  113. 'Compton looks jittery'

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Compton is not looking comfortable at all at the minute. He looks jittery and his timing has gone."

  114. Eng 97-3 (34 overs)

Oooh. A scuttler from Piedt keeps low and Taylor jams his bat down on it - French cricket-style. Compton survives an appeal at short leg - not bat there - before he makes the most of a rare misfield at square leg to gather a single and move to 30.

  115. 'Some players come back stronger'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Some players come back stronger and better after being left out. It doesn't follow that it is the end of your career after being dropped. Compton spoke to me in the summer, asking what he had to do to get back in the side. I said I didn't know - the only person who does is Andrew Strauss. The lad had desire to play so he needed to talk to the man who had the say."

  116. Eng 95-3 (33 overs)

Wicket keeper AB de Villiers catches the ball after England's batsman James Taylor swung

Is this a sign that South Africa are struggling for answers to the Compton-Taylor conundrum? Stiaan van Zyl, opening batsman and part-time medium-pace trundler, is thrown the ball. Actually, he's lucky to be called medium-pace. Graham Gooch-esque. But good enough to beat Taylor's outside edge with the final ball.

  117. 'Still a precarious position'

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"England's position is still precarious. After being put in it is the worst scenario you would accept. I don't think Compton has quite got the balance yet of occupying the crease and also taking the game to the bowlers. When you have 20-odd off 80 balls it is when the pressure starts to build, as you feel you should be scoring more. South Africa will know the reason Compton got dropped and will want to keep the pressure up."

  118. Eng 92-3 (32 overs)

James Taylor almost looks sub-continental at times, such is his penchant for the leg side with those rubbery wrists. I bet he has a mean table tennis forehand. One off that over from Dane Piedt.

  119. From the press box

  120. Eng 91-3 (31 overs)

    James Taylor of England bats

Compton and Taylor deserve immense credit. Coming together at 49-3, they have helped avert a collapse with a watchful partnership that is approaching 50. Against the best pace bowler in the world. And his not-too-shabby mates. On a seamer-friendly track.

Ben Thapa: England need one of these two to make a ton if they're going to post a competitive first-innings score.

Adam Napthine: Can anyone explain why Compton (an opener) is at 3 and Hales (bats at 4 for Notts) is opening?

  122. Eng 89-3 (Compton 26, Taylor 24)

Dane Piedt is getting the odd one to rip - which can worry a batsman more than playing on a raging Bunsen in Mumbai. After James Taylor is deceived against one such delivery, the right-hander uses his feet to get to the pitch of the ball. When the bowler drops short, he stays back and pulls four. Make that two fours in the over. Good batting.

  123. Eng 77-3 (29 overs)

Nick Compton of England plays a shot

Compton in a nutshell in that over: five dot balls followed by a forcing shot off the back foot behind point for four. Patience followed by punishment. Cool as you like.

There's no sign of the turn Piedt found to get Root. Taylor blocks, Taylor dances down the pitch and thinks about a single, Taylor squirts one to mid-wicket. A maiden.

  126. Eng 77-3 (27 overs)

South Africa need a wicket. Who do they turn to? Off-spinner Dane Piedt, of course, he who removed Joe Root with his first delivery earlier on.

Jay: Compton is exactly the sort of batsman England have been missing for a while. Grind it out, bore the opposition to death, score.

Charles Duncan:Choice to switch Compton and Hales? Compton is calmer at the crease could make sense. But feel sorry for Cook now.

Russell Anderson: Looking at Root's dismissal, imagine the damage a left-arm seamer's footmarks could have done bowling last on this....

  128. Eng 77-3

Taylor scampers like no batsmen I've ever seen, a hamster in a wheel as he sprints a single and is almost taken out by Dale Steyn's throw from mid-on. Compton latches on to a rare half-volley from Kyle Abbott, the ball fizzes past mid-off for four and he affords himself an insouciant lean on his bat as he and Taylor shoot the breeze.

  129. Patience the key

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"You feel if the batsmen don't make mistakes, it might take them longer to get the runs - say their first 40 or 50 - but once the newness of the ball goes it will be difficult to bowl a team out."

  130. Eng 72-3 (Compton 17, Taylor 18)

Morkel full and fast. Taylor working to leg. Missing. An appeal from the slips. Less confident much from the bowler. A shake of the head from the umpire. Taylor and Compton keep it ticking over.

  131. 'Don't give it away'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Taylor just needs to be careful here. He has ability and confidence from playing in the one-dayers, but don't go too much and give it away."

  132. Eng 68-3 (25 overs)

TV cameramen working on Tests in South Africa are never short of material in the crowd - let's just say they seem to pick out the ladies working on their sun tans. This time, they find three chaps wearing vests with a leopard-skin design. Hmmm. A crunching cover-driven four for Taylor, off Steyn no less.

  133. Eng 64-3 (Morkel 7-1-23-0)

Nick Compton of England just makes it back safe

Brilliant work from Temba Bavuma at short leg. For the second time in the match, Compton has to hurry back into his ground as Bavuma gathers then flicks the ball towards the stumps - it flicks the bails but Compton's bat is over the line. Close. Very close.

  134. Eng 63-3 (23 overs)

Compton, his left shoulder pointing to mid-on as he stands bolt upright, sees off another testing over from a fired-up Steyn. A play-and-miss off the final ball. That scowl could make children cry.

  135. 'This suits South Africa'

Tom in Zurich: A reminder that the average first-innings score here is just 301. So being put into bat and struggling initially against the best pace attack in the world is hardly a disaster.

  137. Eng 61-3 (22 overs)

What on earth was that? Morkel, one of the tallest bowlers in the world, is pulled straight back down the ground by one of the smallest batsmen. The ball ended up flying between bowler and non-striker for four but Taylor was in control, no doubt about it. David 1, Goliath 0.

  138. Eng 55-3 (21.1 overs)

Morkel pins Compton above the pad on the back thigh with one that nips back off the seam. Compton and Root can compare bruises at the dinner table later on.

  139. Eng 55-3 (21 overs)

    Nick Compton of England bats

Morne Morkel to Nick Compton. Play.

  140. Is Smith considering a comeback?

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I have signed to play in the Masters Champions League and a lot of it has come from that. Retiring at 33 leaves you with that feeling in the back of your mind that you could still do it. It is not something I am thinking about and I would have to have an unbelievable Masters to even consider it."

  141. Busy, busy, busy

    Joe Root
  142. It has stopped raining

As the tractor drags the rope round the outfield, news reaches us that play will resume at 12:18 GMT. Very precise.

  143. Compton's second coming

    Nick Compton of England bats

One of the accusations levelled at Nick Compton in the nine Tests he played before he was dropped was his pedestrian scoring rate - he managed only 34 runs per 100 balls. But his obduracy has been invaluable for England today. He has faced 45 balls for his 12, and struck one boundary in 18 overs at the crease after coming in at 3-1. Most importantly, he has an asterisk next to his name on the scorecard.

  144. Pint-sized prize guys

    Root & Broad

Just what do they look like?

That's Stuart Broad and Joe Root if you hadn't realised already. The pair sat down with BBC Sport recently to discuss England's Ashes victory for a special 5 live programme.Watch it here.

  146. Post update

So while we wait for the rain to stop, what have we learned today? Alastair Cook can't bat for toffee, Alex Hales is not up to Test cricket, Joe Root is on the slide, Dale Steyn is pretty good.

  147. Post update

There's a big blob of rain on the camera that's perched on top of the cherry-picker crane high up above the ground. Hands up who wants to give the lens a wipe...

  148. Rain stops play

    Eng 55-3 (21 overs)

Ground staff cover the playing surface as play is suspended

Oh dear. Just as it was getting interesting, the rains starts to fall again. The fact the players are merely ambling off tells us it's not heavy, but that's not what anyone wanted.

  149. Eng 55-3 (21 overs)

Spare a thought for Dane Piedt - one over, one wicket, one run, then: "Take a blow."

  150. Drinks break

    Eng 55-3 (21 overs)

A short leg comes in to Taylor, whose response is to produce the shot of the day, a firm pull off the world's number one bowler that fizzed to the square-leg fence. Emphatic. Dale, shall we say, doesn't look best pleased.

  151. 'Another wicket could be a game-changer'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It looks like Hashim Amla has recognised that another wicket could be a game-changer by bringing back Dale Steyn. If there is one man who can get that wicket it is Steyn. The last thing you want to do is use Dale all the time. He is not that kind of bowler. Other people have to work for him so you can use him at the right time."

  152. Eng 51-3 (20 overs)

Phew, Morne Morkel is off. Oh, what's that? Dale Steyn is back on? Out of the frying pan and all that...

  153. Eng 51-3 (20 overs)

Abbott is finding a hint of swing back in to Taylor, who defends stoutly, albeit with a hint of bottom hand as he works it to leg. The oohs and aahs from the South Africa slip fielders can be heard after every ball. Gripping cricket - no freebies on offer here, Christmas or no Christmas.

  154. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"This England line-up is amazing. It's as though they bat down to number 12."

  155. Eng 50-3 (19 overs)

James Taylor, playing only his fourth Test, replaces Root. England are in the mire. 'Titch' has shown he's got the ticker for international cricket from what we've seen, but this is another level altogether. He's off the mark by using his feet to Piedt. The 50 up for England.

  156. 'Pressure off the skipper'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"That is a big boost for Amla and Piedt as well. For a spinner to roll up first delivery and take a wicket, especially a man in form like Root, takes an awful lot of pressure off you as a captain."

  157. WICKET

Root lbw Piedt 24 (Eng 49-3)

Dane Piedt of South Africa celebrates lbw for Joe Root

Has height saved Root here? Nope. Ball-tracking suggests the ball would have hit the top of middle stump. England's main man has gone. Inspired captaincy from Hashim Amla.

  158. England review

    Eng 49-2 (18.1 overs)

Joe Root is dismissed by a leg before wicket

Would you believe it?! With his first ball, Piedt finds turn. Root plays back. The ball strikes him on the back pad. And the umpire's finger is up... Root reviews it.

  159. Eng 49-2 (18 overs)

So, 18 in and we have spin in the form of offie Dane Piedt - the man who many thought would not play today and if South Africa had plumped for four seamers.

  160. 'Make life difficult for Root'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa just need to be patient, use your short balls effectively and play to your plans. But other than that you need to make life difficulty for someone who is in form like Root. You need to try and make him take something on that he otherwise wouldn't."

  161. Eng 49-2 (18 overs)

    Joe Root runs between wickets

After a minor problem with something behind the bowler's arm, Root ends the with a pinched single. Given the circumstances, England's running between the wickets has been impressive.

  162. Eng 48-2 (17.1 overs)

Take that! Abbott is a smidge short, Root rocks back and fairly wallops it over midwicket for six. That went flat. And hard. The counter-attack is on... Maybe.

  163. 'This session is vital'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"With Durban being cloudy you expect bad light to play a part later. So this session before tea is vital. It has been a slow bounce today and Root has looked class, including guiding that one down through gully. Batting is all about confidence and Root is a man who understands his own game and is in control."

  164. Eng 42-2 (Compton 12, Root 17)

Root could have done worse than bring a copy of the Yellow Pages to stand on today - both his feet are off the ground as he defends another lifter from Morkel. He follows it up with a controlled cut/force between point and gully. Lovely, Joe. The first boundary for six overs and only the third of the innings. Partnership worth 30 now.

  165. 'Intriguing cricket'

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It is intriguing cricket at the moment. Bowler-friendly conditions and they are putting them in the right spot. Root and Compton don't look entirely comfortable but they are weathering the storm."

  166. Eng 37-2 (16 overs)

Abbott continues to barrel in, his hair drenched with sweat. Or maybe he's gone for the wet-look gel today. Bang on the money - targeting the top of off stump. Slim pickings for the batsmen at the moment, the run-rate a mere 2.31 an over.

  167. World Cup finalists win again

    New Zealand

New Zealandcruised to victory in their opening one-day international against Sri Lanka overnight.

The visitors never recovered from being reduced to 27-5 and eventually folded for 188.

The Black Cats rattled along to their target, completing the chase in just 21 overs as skipper Brendon McCullum smeared 55 off 25 balls.

    The full scorecard ishere.

  168. Eng 36-2 (15 overs)

Compton just about evades another rip-snorter of a short ball, but is alert enough to push three wide of mid-off when Morkel goes fuller. Root then gets away with an edged drive wide of the three hungry slips. A blow to Compton's hip to finish the over. This is absorbing stuff in conditions that are firmly favouring the seamers. South Africa sense wickets.

Dale Steyn of South Africa celebrates taking the wicket of Alex Hales

David: Why is Hales getting so much stick? Lost toss in bowling conditions played himself in a bit. Off for rain, very tough on debut .

Rob Meech: Writing off a man's Test career after one innings - is it 1995? Pathetic.

  170. Eng 29-2 (Abbott 5-1-13-0)

Compton, deep in his crease, is much as I remember him when he last played for England: compact, watchful, minimal yet precise foot movement, negligible backlift. He's drawn forward by Abbott.... and watches the ball zip past the outside edge. A puff of the cheeks all round.

  171. 'Hales will get a score'

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Disappointing for Alex Hales. It was a leaden-footed drive. It is fuel for his detractors. I wouldn't read too much into it, though. I'm sure he will have a good score this series."

  172. Eng 28-2 (13 overs)

Morkel, back into the attack after that change of ends, finds lift and has Compton taken at short leg. Or does he? That looked - and sounded - in real time like a regulation catch, but the appeal is muted and replays showed the ball missed the bat. Good job I'm not umpiring. Compton surviving. Just.

  173. How's stat?!

    Dale Steyn
  174. Eng 27-2 (Compton 7, Root 9)

Oooof! Abbott, replacing Morkel, finds extra bounce and Root - on his toes - is fending one off towards the slips. It lands short. The South Africa quicks have got steam coming out of their nostrils today. Maiden over.

  175. 'Compton earned that boundary'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"I thought he earned that boundary by playing straight and well. He's played and missed at a couple but if you stay in long enough you will get balls to hit. You have to limit your own mistakes."

  176. Eng 27-2 (11 overs)

    Nick Compton of England bats

Compton's first boundary, a searing cut as Steyn lets slip a rare wide one. Playing his first Test since he appeared against New Zealand in May 2013, Compton is looking as solid as can be expected.

  177. Eng 23-2 (10.3 overs)

The stump mic is certainly turned up in Durban - probably for the best that Australia aren't playing. "Wait there! Yes!" screams  Joe Root as he steals a single off Steyn.

  178. 'In the corridor'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"A wonderful ball from Morkel, just in that corridor, using his height. If he did nick it, it will have been so fine only the men behind the stumps would have been able to hear it."

  179. Eng 22-2 (10 overs)

So the responsibility for the rescue act falls on Joe Root again. How often have we said that over the past year or so...? Morkel goes short, Root goes back to defend. An inside edge on to his thigh shows it's far from comfortable out there. Should leave a nice bruise.

There's a muted appeal for caught behind off the last ball of the over. Compton survives and South Africa's faffing costs them the chance of a review.

Rt. Rev. Liam Reilly: I look forward to seeing Alastair Cook's 9th opening partner in the next series. Either that or Compton at 2 & bring in Hildreth.

  181. Eng 21-2 (9 overs)

Steyn charging, snarling, staring. He's arrowing the ball in to Compton's stumps here - quick and straight with a hint of late inswing. The Comp Dog is up to the task - and alert to singles as he drops another one into the off side. A good contest, as they say.

  182. How's stat?!

"Most consecutive Tests at an away venue without defeat: 18 - Australia at Lord's, 1934-2009; 14 - Eng at Auckland, 1930-2002; 11 - England at Durban, 1928- present."

  183. Eng 19-2 (Compton 2, Root 6)

As if to make matters worse for England, the towering Morne Morkel takes over from Kyle Abbott. Steyn and Morkel - not a bad little attack...

Jon Hyde: Cheers Cookie I’d had a lovely Boxing Day so far then that! At least Compton gets the chance he has deserved early doors!

Neil Hingley: Wakes up, blinks, sees Woakes in the side, puts pillow over head and cries.

"There are one or two umbrellas up in the crowd. The two umpires are looking away to our right, where there is a big dark cloud. Maybe they think they need to get them off to protect the pitch for what is coming? But I can't see any rain in the air."

  213. Post update

Alex Hales and Nick Compton of England walk off as rain returns

Hang on... now they're saying it's lightning which has stopped play.

  214. It's raining

Alex Hales and Nick Compton of England walk off as rain returns

Come on, fellas. We've had worse than this.

A few little spots of rain and the umpires send the players back into the dressing room.

"Everybody in, it's spitting." P Kay, circa 2004.

  215. Eng 12-1 (SA won toss)

Alex Hales' perceived weakness could become his strength. South Africa are striving for the magic delivery which nips back and rocks back the off stick, but their radar is off and the right-hander is flicking runs through the mid-wicket region in the manner of a chocoholic unwrapping the festive treats and tossing the wrapper in the bin. Easy runs.

Jack Beecroft:"Let's see where this Boxing Day roller-coaster England innings takes us, I'm dreading the automatic refresh already."

Tattz: Steyn is one of those bowlers you just love to watch, whoever you support. Massive game for Compton now that Cook is out early.

Scott Lennon: For me the decision to have Woakes means you have to bat SA out the game by scoring 500+. Catastrophic start.

  217. Eng 7-1 (Hales 6, Compton 0)

    Nicholas Compton plays a shot

England are living a charmed life here... Nick Compton edging Dale Steyn to first slip and the ball drops just short. If the number three can come through this test, he'll have proved a lot. Same applies to Alex Hales.

  218. Eng 7-1 (Hales 6, Compton 0)

Alex Hales topples over like a Jenga tower when he tries to lean into a very good yorker. He manages to dig it out, though. Just about.

His reply to the bowler, Kyle Abbott, is emphatic: a flowing cover drive for all-run four. Lovely.

Sanj:As expected, early wicket. Even worse that it was Cook. SA will be batting by the end of the day won't they?

Adam Davies: Things you regret on Boxing Day: That extra portion of trifle, getting the whiskey out and playing 2 foot away from your body.

Scott Henderson: That wasn't in the script! Ah well at least we can rely on the experience of Hales and Compton.

  220. Eng 3-1 (SA won toss)

Welcome back to Test cricket, Nick Compton.

His first delivery is an absolute beaut from Dale Steyn: a little short, a little movement and it shaves his armpit hair on its way through to the keeper. Jaffa.

  221. How's stat?!

    Andrew Samson

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"That's Alastair Cook's first duck since Perth 2013 against Australia - he went 22 innings without a duck."

  222. 'Not sure what Cook could do about that'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

Alastair Cook of England walks off

"It just bounced a fraction. It was around off stump and just left him a bit. I'm not sure what he could do about that. It was one of those, when common sense returns after sitting in the dressing room, I'd wonder if I could have played that any differently?"

  223. WICKET

    Cook c Elgar b Steyn 0 (Eng 3-1)

Morne Steyn celebrates taking the wicket of Alastair Cook

Oh Skip! Why are you playing at that?

Alastair Cook nibbles at the ball outside off stump like a reindeer would a carrot on Christmas Eve. A tentative push into the hands of Dean Elgar at second slip and the Proteas erupt. Dale Steyn almost bursts a blood vessel such is the ferocity of his send-off.

  224. Australia run hot...

    Australia v West Indies

    Usman Khawaja

Australia, not for the first time this winter, are enjoying themselves with the bat.

They ran up 345-3 on the opening day of the second Test against West Indies in Melbourne. Opener Joe Burns made 128 and Usman Khawaja - back after a hamstring injury - 144, his third hundred in three Tests.

The only surprise for Australia, who beat New Zealand 2-0 in November and lead West Indies 1-0 in this three-Test series, is that David Warner managed only 23.

    Latest scorecard

  225. Eng 3-0 (Cook 0, Hales 2)

That'll do nicely! Alex Hales is off the mark from his first ball in Test cricket when Kyle Abbott gets too leggy and the right-hander flicks a couple off his pads. The Notts man is also solid in defence early on. Promising.

  226. 'No pace from Steyn'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"If I'm sat in the England dressing room watching that  from Steyn I am pretty happy. There was no pace whatsoever. The keeper was taking them at kneecap height."

  227. Eng 0-0 (Cook 0, Hales 0)

Lots of chat from the South Africa fielders as Alastair Cook exercises some early caution outside off stump against Dale Steyn, who delivers the ball and then does an aggressive shuffle in his follow-through. A maiden to begin with.

  228. Eng 0-0

I tell you what... there's some big cracks on that Kingsmead pitch. If we get a bit of sun on it, it might be Waca-esque.

  233. 'South Africa must start well'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I think the series is 50/50 at the moment. I think South Africa need to start well. If they don't I think England will have the run of it for the series. The messages that have come out of the South Africa camp since India have shown a lack of confidence. The decision-making has been uncertain."

  234. Post update

I always like to see the random football shirts in the crowd at the cricket. My first spot today is Bradford City fans.

  239. 'Hales has to get the basics right'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"The two losses on both teams will be James Anderson and Vernon Philander. In these conditions Vernon Philander would have been snaking it around.

"In tough conditions you have to fall back and rely on something. Hales has to work out what his basics are and get that right. His natural attacking game will come through."

  240. Line-ups

South Africa:Dean Elgar, Stiaan van Zyl, Hashim Amla (captain), Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, Temba Bavuma, JP Duminy, Dale Steyn, Dane Piedt, Kyle Abbott, Morne Morkel.

England:Alastair Cook (captain), Alex Hales, Nick Compton, Joe Root, James Taylor, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, Steven Finn.

  241. South Africa's march to the top

    South Africa graphic
  242. 'England's batsman have more confidence'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"The Indian series for South Africa was quite debilitating in confidence for the batsmen. The pitches are nothing like here - they are deliberately made and turn square. But when you keep failing, it doesn't matter the circumstances, it damages your confidence. It is how they play this Test match. If they stay in the middle, get runs, their confidence will grow as they are on pitches they know. England are a bit better - players have made 100s and 50s. There is more confidence."

  243. Don't mention Jo'burg...

Of course, England will be hoping for a better start to the match than they made in the opening Test of the 1999 series when theyslumped to 2-4 inside three overs -Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Mark Butcher and Alec Stewart all dismissed to a rampant Pollock and Donald double act.

Gavin Hamilton made his only Test appearance in that game...

  247. Captain's view

England captain Alastair Cook: "What a chance for Alex Hales to make a debut - it's such a special day. It's a real reminder to all of us who have played a bit of cricket what a special occasion it is, to make your debut in the Boxing Day Test in Durban.

"We've started this tour pretty well; we've had a good build-up and got what we wanted out of it. And it's great to see so many English fans here - we got a great reception walking out."

  248. Captain's view

South Africa captain Hashim Amla: "Overhead conditions could play a part so hopefully we will get a few wickets. We are fresh and ready to go at home. Everybody is raring to go.

"It is lovely to have Dale Steyn back in the mix. He has been bowling well in the nets. To have the world's best bowler back in your side is really good."

  249. 'Steyn is at his best when he is full of work'

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"Dale Steyn's was the longest fitness test I've ever heard of. They drilled him for an hour and a half. As everybody knows, Steyn is at his best when he is full of work. He reacts badly to being wrapped in cotton wool. He was bowling at full pace in India but couldn't do 20 overs and that is his own benchmark."

  250. Post update

So, if Graeme Smith is to be believed, England need to dig in early on and then it will get easier.

A penny for the thoughts of debutant Alex Hales who has to go and face the music against Steyn, Morkel and Co...

  251. Toss

South Africa win the toss and will bowl first.Get padded up, Alastair.

  252. 'A toss you hope to lose'

    Graeme Smith

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

"For me it is one of those tosses you hope to lose. I think I would bat. For the first hour it will be tough but it will get flat, hot and dry and you have two innings."

  253. View from the middle

  254. Post update

The toss, let me remind you, is coming up at the top of the hour.

    Not long now.

  255. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa have got to decide between playing spinner Dane Piedt or Kyle Abbott, the fourth seamer. In this era, when captain Hashim Amla is very open, it's really surprising we don't know this. Right now, it's definitely a bowl-first pitch."

  256. No Anderson for England

South Africa, mind, don't have to worry about James Anderson this morning. England's main man is out injured, meaning Chris Woakes will join Stuart Broad, Steven Finn and Ben Stokes in the seam attack.

  257. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"As an opening batsman, it doesn't look that appetising. Sometimes bowlers don't get it right in condition like this, but I wouldn't be queuing up to bat here."

  260. The rankings don't lie...

    International Cricket Council Test rankings

    1. South Africa: 114 rating
    2. India: 110
    3. Australia: 109
    4. Pakistan: 106
    5. New Zealand: 99
    6. England: 99
    7. Sri Lanka: 89
    8. West Indies 76
    9. Bangladesh: 47
    10. Zimbabwe: 5
  261. How will England fare?

England, according to some, have got no chance in South Africa.

The Proteas do have AB De Villiers, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in their ranks... but there are plenty of form and injury clouds hovering.

England, in my very humble opinion, are a team on the up. Lots of talent, lots of potential and lots to be excited about.

  262. Weather forecast

BBC Weather's John Hammond does have better news concerning the weather, however:"Showers in the vicinity of Durban for the first day’s play, so I expect some interruptions – though hopefully not a washout. The cloud will suppress the temperatures too – low 20s Celsius.

"However the rain risk will diminish after today, so few if any interruptions from Day 2 onwards. It’ll warm up too – reaching the high 20s over the following few days."

  263. Start delayed - but not for long

Before we steam in from the Boxing Day Test End, however, let me tell you that play has been delayed by 30 minutes because of overnight rain. Therefore, we'll have the toss at 08:00 GMT, and play will begin at 08:30 GMT.

  264. Morning!

    Royle Family

We've had the presents, turkey and the red wine.

We're sick of listening to Wham, Cliff Richard and Shakin' Stevens.

The extended family are getting close to outstaying their welcome.

And the thought of heading to the Boxing Day sales is about as appealing as facing Dale Steyn on a green top in South Africa.

Shall we just sit on the sofa and follow the cricket?
