South Africa captain Hashim Amla on Sky Sports: "There will be something in the wicket but we would have batted first. The guys have handled themselves very well after the match in Durban.

"Steyn and Abbott are injured so Morris and Rabada come in, with Quinton de Kock keeping wicket. Morris has done well in the domestic set up and ODIs and he's shown he has what it takes to make it in Test cricket."

England captain Alastair Cook: "It looks a really good Test wicket. It might do a little bit this morning and, with the cracks, it might turn later on. But as we saw in Durban the toss is pretty irrelevant.

"Jimmy Anderson is back, which is tough on Chris Woakes, who did really well in Durban without much luck. It's a tough call but when you've got someone with 420-odd wickets then you've got to pick him."

  5. Three changes for Proteaspublished at 08:05

A few changes to tell you about with the South Africa side. Injured fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Kyle Abbott are replaced by Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada while Quinton de Kock relieves AB De Villiers of the wicketkeeping gloves and JP Duminy makes way.

You did read that right. Alastair Cook has won a toss of the coin. I don't have the stats to hand, but he's been a notoriously bad tosser in recent times.

The skipper also confirms James Anderson will play. He replaces Chris Woakes.

The toss is coming up very shortly... but will England be able to field a fit-again James Anderson? Has the Burnley Express passed his New Year MOT?

  10. SA in decline?published at 07:59

So here we are. Waiting for the toss of a coin at Cape Town, on the back of England's 241-run success in the first match.

South Africa appear to be a team in steep decline. They were bedraggled in Durban and resembled the England Test team of the nineties: injuries, in-fighting and batting collapses.

I hope for the Proteas' sake they don't have to resort to calling up Mark Ealham, Mark Lathwell or Aftab Habib.

  11. Reasons to be cheerfulpublished at 07:56

Morning all. Did you enjoy welcoming in 2016? Excellent.

Now you might think I'm being a tad optimistic with my opening entry and that the festive brandies are still having an effect.

But let's look at this logically: England might go 2-0 up against the world's best Test team, on their own patch, in the next few days.

The T20 team appear to be shaping up for something big based on last year's performances, while the 50-over lot whacked 408 against the World Cup finalists, New Zealand, back in June.

Suddenly, anything appears possible with this bunch of gifted cricketers. Apart from finding an opening partner for Alastair Cook, it seems.

Soon, they'll be advertising that particular job in the local rag.

A new year, and plenty of new possibilities for the England cricket team.

Could they end 2016 as the best Test team in the world? Possibly.

Could they win the 2016 World T20? Possibly.

Can they become the first team to post 500 in an ODI? Mmm...
