But that's it for today. England are series winners in South Africa, even if they looked anything but winners today.

The first ODI is a week on Wednesday, 3 February. Put your pyjamas on and join us then.

  2. Post update

Your next fix of England Test cricket is in May, when Sri Lanka will be the visitors. Before then, there's the ODIs and T20s against South Africa and the small matter of the World Twenty20 in March.

  3. Post update

Is there much more to say? It's the end of England's Test winter, and a 10-month period where they have racked up 17 Tests, appointed a new coach and won the Ashes.

Andy Baber: Spineless performance from England. Pathetic performance from the batting line-up when a result was still up for grabs.

It's just been suggested to me that we could repeat today's live text, in real time, for those who have missed it. In fact, we could probably do it three or four times.

    Alex Hales

"I wouldn't pick Hales, I don't think he has got the technique. A good selector watches the county scene, watches a batsman's feet and hands and wonder if he can step up to Test cricket."

  10. Final scorecard

England 101 all out (34.4 overs) - SA won by 280 runs

    England won series 2-1

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"You can't always be consistent but your mind can. They've been nowhere near the standards they set at the Wanderers a few days ago. I thought they'd be more consistent than this."

  13. 'Maybe there is a dearth of quality'

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"There are questions marks over the number two, three and five positions. Woakes is a big question mark about whether he is good enough to get wickets. We can only pick what we have. It's up to the selectors to get the best ones - maybe there is a dearth of quality."

  14. 'I'll be doing something to sheep soon'

England captain Alastair Cook: "In this Test we lacked variety in our attack, we'll learn from that going forward. We've got options and it's all there for the bowlers in they want it.

"I'm looking forward to getting home and, within a week, I'll be back doing something to sheep.

"It's been a long eight months. Some of the older guys are looking forward to this time off and they will be ready to go in May."

  15. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"It was almost like one-day cricket - they gave up."

  16. 'Stokes and Bayliss just swear at each other'

More from Alastair Cook: "It shouldn't take anything away from the guys. South Africa in this match showed what a good side they are.

"Ben Stokes has thrived under Trevor. They have an unusual relationship of just swearing at each other; they seem to get on.

"He's had a tough time and learned what he needs to do. He went home from Abu Dhabi with his arm in a sling and he's worked hard physically.

"It's no coincidence that in the games we won we caught everything. It's not just Jonny Bairstow, but he knows he needs to take chances. It takes me back to when Matty Prior first came in. He dropped a few chance but worked incredibly hard on his keeping and proved people can improve."

  17. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Get your head down and save the match. But there was no effort this morning. Coming out and playing shots, does that excuse you after winning the series? No. There's no excuse for that. You have to be professional. That's not good enough."

  18. 'This is just a blip'

Alastair Cook, speaking to Sky Sports: "We're nowhere near the finished article. There's a huge amount of work to do on our batting and our catching.

"You can probably afford Tests like this if you keep winning series. We spoke honestly about how we were going about this week; we tried not to do what we did against Australia.

"A lot of time, under pressure we produce outstanding performances. That's the really exciting thing. This is just a blip and incredibly frustrating.

"You have to give the guys a little bit of leeway. For us to be at number one, we do need to start gutsing these out."

  19. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"England receive all the credit for winning the series. I take my hat off to them. Winning abroad, winning anywhere is good.

"What is disappointing is, after winning the series, playing like this this morning. It's attitude more than anything. It isn't that the team can't bat or bowl."

  20. Post update

  21. 'This shows how much work we have to do'

More from Alastair Cook: "We didn't get the balance right today. I can't really fault the lads too much, because if you'd said we'd win the series 2-1, we'd have taken that.

"Today is a blow and shows how much work we still have to do.

"We have players who can change the game quickly, especially with the bat. With the ball, we can get a roll and be hard to stop.

"We need consistency, especially with our fielding. Taking catches will make us a better side.

"We'll enjoy winning a series away from home."

    Alastair Cook
  22. Post update

England captain Alastair Cook: "It's been a disappointing five days; we haven't been on it. We hung in there without ever getting on top.

"Trevor just described it as a limp performance, which sums it up.

"We spoke about trying to build partnerships, trying to get their bowlers into second and third spells. It proves sometimes you can talk too much."

  23. 'I still prefer batting'

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who scored 411 runs at 58 and took 12 wickets at 29 in the series: "I still prefer batting but it's nice to be contributing with both. Consistency is something I've been lacking so it's good to get in some good performances.

"The role I've been given is to come on and take some wickets - going for some runs isn't something I've been too fussed about. So it was nice to get a few important wickets."

  24. Man of the series

Who else could it have been? Well played, Ben Stokes.

  25. Post update

  26. Man of the match

Man of the match Kagiso Rabada, who took 13-144 in the match: "It was a bit up and down so the key was the hit the deck and bowl the ball in a good area and I believed you'd get your rewards."

AB says South Africa were ready to go to 5.30 in the afternoon. England weren't ready to go to 11.30 in the morning.

  28. Post update

More from AB de Villiers: "To take seven wickets in the time that we did was not part of the thinking. We were ready to go to 5.30 today.

"I've really enjoyed being captain. I'm keen to move forward. The team is in a really good space and it's a bright future for us.

"We've got a long way to go. It's a rebuilding phase for us."

  29. Post update

South Africa captain AB de Villiers: "I thought the boys were very fired up for this. It's been a while since we've won, so we'll enjoy it.

"I'm very excited about some of the guys that have come through and taken their opportunities. I'm very proud of Kagiso.

"It was a great team performance. We showed a lot of character."

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"That's not good enough. There are no dead rubbers in Test cricket. To lose seven for 43 in 10.5 overs, you can't be having that."

  32. Post update

We should put the series into context. Winning in South Africa is a fantastic achievement by this England side, even if today's capitulation leaves a sour taste. To beat the number one side in the world away from home is a brilliant effort.

  33. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Guts - Hashim Amla yesterday showed them, his thumb was dripping blood.  As soon as England hear anyone question that they had the guts and the determination to fight on a wicket with a bit of spark it'll hurt them."

"Some of those shots this morning were not the shots of a team that was thinking we can really win this Test match. It's the old adage of 'it's the way we play', regardless of the situation."

  34. Post update

I wonder what is being said in the England dressing room at the moment? Does Trevor Bayliss own a hairdryer?

"You don't mind losing a Test match, but to lose a Test match like that... To be bowled out in the first hour of play...

"They've got a way to go to get to number one in the world. You've just got to show a bit of guts."

  41. Post update

I take the point that this match was probably lost on day one - South Africa did get too many - but where was the fight today? Yes the pitch did a bit, but only two men - Alex Hales and James Taylor - were got out.

  42. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

  46. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I get so frustrated when I see this. England have got to be very careful. You can't just show up on morning one of a game and expect to play in the same vein as the week before.

"Have they been cocky this week? I don't know. They haven't been on it. Whether you're winning the series or not, if you're a good team you don't relax.

"It's the same feeling we had a Australia at The Oval in 2015. England were winning the series but they put in such a flat performance."

  47. Post update

A lovely moment as Kagiso Rabada leads South Africa up the stairs, met by a hug and a handshake from his father. We've seen the arrival of a world fast bowling star.

  48. Post update

England lost seven wickets in less than 70 minutes this morning. A total collapse of 7-43. I don't care if you've already won the series - that is awful.

  49. South Africa win by 280 runs

Well that was an absolute disaster, wasn't it?

  50. South Africa win by 280 runs

Anderson lbw Rabada 0 (Eng 101 all out)

    Kagiso Rabada

All over! James Anderson is lbw first ball, the review showing he got no bat on and it would have crashed into leg stump. South Africa win by 280 runs and Kagiso Rabada, the 20-year-old, takes 13 wickets in the match. A wonderful, wonderful performance.

  51. Umpire review

    Eng 101-9

Then again. There's no edge. This could be all she wrote...

  52. Umpire review

    Eng 101-9

James Anderson, the last man, hit first ball. It doesn't look out, but South Africa somehow decide to have another look. I'd be surprised...

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"This has been very disappointing. It's almost like the white towel has been thrown in. They've batted on a pitch with a bit of spice on but they've shown no heart."

  54. WICKET

    Broad c De Villiers b Rabada 2 (Eng 101-9)

There are no new ways to describe an awful shot, or that England have surrendered. Wide from Kagiso Rabada, who now has 12 in the match, Stuart Broad slashing to slip. I hope Trevor Bayliss has them in the nets after this...

  56. Eng 101-8 (SA need 2 wickets)

Two Moeen boundaries bring up the 100 - there's a reason to celebrate. Of all the England batsman this morning - and admittedly most of them have been like Lemmings into a lake - Moeen has looked the least likely to fall on his sword.

  57. England's winter in three words

    #bbccricket

    Anton Muszanskyj: Up, Up, Down.

    Tom Birkin: Explosive but fragile.

    D: Make it stop !!!

  58. Eng 93-8 (Rabada 10-2-32-4)

In less than an hour's play, England have lost five wickets. They might as well as hung a pair of white Y-fronts off the dressing room balcony in surrender. Kagiso Rabada has 11 wickets - even he can't believe some of the gifts. Stuart Broad is the new man. He'll dig in...

  59. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"The impression very clearly by the England batsman has been: we've absolutely got no chance today so we might as well play shots."

  60. WICKET

    Woakes c De Kock b Rabada 5 (Eng 91-8)

    Kagiso Rabada celebrates

Oh for... what is going on? Chris Woakes, this isn't even a good ball. Miles wide of off stump, short. You're already eight down and getting steam-rollered. Just leave it alone, maybe? Instead, a waft at Kagiso Rabada gets you caught behind. Hard to put into words how inept England have been this morning.

  61. Post update

    Mark Boucher

Former South Africa wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"It would be interesting to pick England's brains and find out what their though processes were this morning, because they came out and played a lot of shots for s side supposedly coming out to play for a draw.

"I'm all for playing your natural game but you've also got to bear in mind your position in the game. I thought a bit more time would have been taken to play yourselves in."

  62. Eng 91-7

Moeen Ali actually looks quite calm out there, even if he is wearing a few on the body. Morkel, the giraffe, gets the speed gun near 90. Meanwhile, I'm told that Shaun Tait's first ball in the T20 between Australia and India is in the mid-90s. It's his first international in five years!

  63. Post update

  64. Eng 88-7 (SA need 3 wickets)

The England dressing room looks like the Green Room before an episode of Jeremy Kyle. A warring family not talking to each other. Paul Farbrace sits at one end, head in hand, literally staring in the opposite direction from everyone else. Miraculously, England get through a Rabada over without losing a wicket.

  66. Eng 87-7 (Morkel 10-5-26-3)

So England have lost 4-25 this morning. I've just heard someone say that it's hard to pick yourself up for the final Test when you've won the series with one game to go. Nonsense. Surely it's harder for the team that's already beaten to play again?

  67. England's winter in three words

    #bbccricket

    Simon Lewis: Series won? Capitulate.

    Brandon Q-Hicks: Try avoiding collapses.

    Jay: Need more gingers.

  68. Eng 83-7

Smashed it? He gave catching practice. I'm not having the fact he middled it as an excuse. You don't say that someone edged it well when he gets caught at slip, do you? Chris Woakes breaks off from his packing to become the next England rabbit in the headlights.

  69. Post update

    Mark Boucher

Former South Africa wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

    South Africa's players celebrate

"It's like a highlights package. Something seems to be happening every ball. Stokes tried the positive option - he actually smashed that."

  70. WICKET

    Stokes c Cook b Morkel 10

Are they trying to catch an earlier flight? I understand that Ben Stokes is trying to counter-attack, but surely some judgement comes into it? There's a man back on the hook and Stokes hoiks a Morne Morkel bumper straight to Stephen Cook on the leg-side fence. It's horrendous from England, who are having their bellies tickled.

  71. How's stat?!

    Andrew Samson

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Kagiso Rabada is the youngest South Africa bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test at 20 years and 246 days. The previous youngest was Hugh Tayfield at 23 days and 335 days against Australia in Melbourne in 1952."

  72. England's winter in three words

  75. Post update

    Mark Boucher

Former South Africa wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"Who would have put money on that? I wonder if Bairstow walked past the umpire and asked him to check the front foot again..."

  76. Ten-wicket haul for Kagiso Rabada

    Eng 83-6

Kagiso Rabada celebrates with his team

Well bowled, Kagiso Rabada, who becomes the youngest South Africa bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test match. He really has got something, the 20-year-old. ood pace, athleticism, but, above all, the ability to pound away on and around off stump and at in-between length. A real talent.

  77. WICKET

    Bairstow c De Kock b Rabada 14 (Eng 83-6)

    Kagiso Rabada

Words fail me. Can you believe it? From the very next ball, Jonny Bairstow edges behind. There's no saving you this time, Jonny. A decent ball, angled in and nipping away, but the same batsman being out twice in two balls pretty much sums up England's morning. Awful.

  78. Post update

    Mark Boucher

Former South Africa wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa will be disappointed with this. It's on the line and the line belongs to the batsman."

  79. Bairstow reprieved on 14

    Eng 83-5

No-ball! Jonny Bairstow should be on his way back, but Kagiso Rabada has not got anything behind the line. It was a loose drive from Bairstow, edging to first slip, while Rabada has to wait to complete his 10-wicket haul...

  80. England's winter in three words

    tms@bbc.co.uk

  81. Eng 78-5

I've just seen a replay of that blow to Stokes. It was like being punched by Carl Froch. When he lifts his shirt, there's a red mark on his stomach. Jonny Bairstow, who has seen the danger, calls for a chest guard. Stokes doesn't bother. Hard as nails.

  82. England's winter in three words

  83. Eng 78-5 (require another 304 to win)

I don't suppose your mate is from Stoke-on-Trent, Chris? The North Staffordshire oatcake is a delicacy. Bacon, cheese and tomato ketchup. Morne Morkel has Ben Stokes hopping around, with the Durham all-rounder taking a blow just above the most painful place.

    England fans

The Barmies are having a right old knees-up, banging out some classics. A bit of Sweet Caroline now. Sing along, you know the words. Jonny Bairstow likes it, spanking Rabada through mid-wicket for four.

  86. Post update

  87. Eng 66-5 (target 382)

AB de Villiers got a bit of stick for not declaring yesterday, but he was spot on with his captaincy this morning. He had a hunch that Piedt would get Root and it worked. Now, Piedt is off and nine-wicket Kagiso Rabada is on.

  89. Eng 64-5

Sun out at Centurion, but it's pouring down in the England dressing room where Moeen Ali has had to rush to get his pads on. Ben Stokes won't die wondering here, he's rubbing his sticks together to fight fire with fire. A Morkel short ball, Stokes top-edging a hook over the keeper for four.

  91. Eng 60-5 (Piedt 7-2-11-1)

Just turning on? Where've you been? England really have lost two wickets in the first four overs. Firstly, the Taylor wicket. Great delivery, little he could do. If that's a sign of things to come, England are stuffed. Root's was an awful shot, driving and undone by the flight and lack of turn. Ben Stokes lost a batting partner before he even faced a ball and is joined by Jonny Bairstow.

    Joe Root edges to slip

"That was a poor shot. He got dropped first over - here he's driving to another straight ball. That was not the right shot, not when you're staying to save the game and you're the main player. They can't get out of playing shots, this side."

  93. WICKET

    Root c Elgar b Piedt 20 (Eng 58-5)

    Dane Piedt celebrates

Don't go anywhere because this could be over quickly. England lose a second wicket in the space of four deliveries, but this time it's a pretty loose shot. Joe Root, who had already edged Dane Piedt once this morning, plays a pretty airy drive and is held at first slip. England are in all sorts of myther.

  94. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"You can't do owt with them. You just have to put your hand and suck up your disappointment. Bowlers are entitled to bowl good balls."

  95. WICKET

    Taylor c De Kock b Morkel 24 (Eng 58-4)

    Morne Morkel

Gone! First blood to South Africa! It's an absolute brute from Morne Morkel, with not a great deal that James Taylor can do. It's just short of length, but rears alarmingly towards the face of Taylor. With the bat handle in front of his head, Taylor can only take the ball on the glove, with keeper Quinton de Kock able to take a simple catch. That was a snorter.

  96. Post update

    "He should have taken that."

  99. Root dropped on 19

    Eng 58-3

That's why Dane Piedt is bowling! Joe Root is dropped from his first ball of the day. Prod forward for turn that isn't there, an edge to keeper Quinton de Kock, who has cymbals for hands. The ball crashes to the ground and Root has a let-off.

    Gavin Irvine: Pietersen still required.

  101. Eng 56-3

"Here's a message from the South Africans - they're down the steps already as if to show they mean business."

South Africa are down the steps very early, waiting on the boundary edge, pawing at the ground. England are just finishing their prayer to the god of rain.

So what do you think? A time for heroes, or England to go quietly in to the night? And if they do get out of this one, who will be the man to hold back the South African tide.

And, as it's the end of the Test winter, feel free to send me your England report card. In three words, please.

"The way South Africa came out and bowled last night - they looked like a side that wanted to win. They look like the side that has taken full control of this Test. Where's this intensity been for the rest of the series?"

"There's more than enough for the South Africa bowlers if they land it in the right areas. AB de Villiers will have to look after the way he uses Rabada and Morkel. But there is turn there for Dane Piedt. I do see them winning this."

I would love to know what Geoffrey Boycott is doing in the picture below. Anyway, as the tweet tells you, TMS is up and running. Hit the live coverage tab at the top of this page if you want to listen.

Which is where we begin this final day of England's Test winter. Can Cook's men pull off another great escape, or will South Africa take a consolation victory?

A target of 382 on a pitch with more ups and downs than Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The top order as useful as wet toilet paper.

England 52-3 and staring down the barrel. The tourists need something special. Or rain.

England need a hero or two to get out of this mess at Centurion Park.

The spirit of rearguards past must be summoned. Mike Atherton, Jack Russell, Paul Collingwood, Graham Onions, even Monty Panesar.

    And there's always James Anderson...

I've no idea what is played on the stereo in the England dressing room before play. If I had to guess, I'd say that Joe Root likes One Direction, Alastair Cook would prefer a bit of Only Men Aloud and that Trevor Bayliss gets emotional at Perry Como.

This morning, might I suggest a bit of David Bowie...
