Morris hasn't had a bowl yet. After Trent Bridge and some of the balls he bowled there. He got Cook and Root out there, he must be itching for a bowl.

And for those of you who missed it, here's how it all ended for Keaton Jennings:

While the players take drinks, all you Tom Westley fans can watch one of his fours. (And see what I'm talking about when I say he's got sticky tape keeping his helmet together).

A big appeal from Rabada against Cook, but that looked to be missing leg stump - hence why the keeper and slip don't join in the chorus. There's a cluster of pigeons on the square at mid-wicket, but Cook leaves them in peace as he pushes a single to cover. The Essex pair have earned a drinks break.

    Cook 27, Westley 16

South Africa turn to spin within the first hour of the Test - slow left-armer Keshav Maharaj has a slip and a short leg in place, but Westley gets forward well to slap him through extra cover for four, then unleashes an attractive, whippy on-drive for four more.

Dave Wood: Someone appears to have reminded the England batsmen that this is a five-day Test match. Progress.

MD‏: Cook leading the way with his footwork & timing. Captain or not, he's still the spiritual leader of this team

Cook looks to be setting in nicely, while Rabada is belatedly finding some line and length - just as Geoffrey on TMS wonders whether Chris Morris is worth an early spell after his success at Trent Bridge. Maiden over.

You have to bend your front knee so your body weight comes forward and your head is not only on the line of the ball but over the ball. That's basic technique, England's coaches should have picked that up.

In the last 11 Test matches, Alastair Cook hasn't got a fifty in the first innings.

Here he is hitting another four...

    Cook 27, Westley 8

As well as digging into Keaton Jennings' cricket technique, Geoffrey Boycott on TMS is having a grump about "these modern coffee cups with lids on them". Apparently, Boycs - whose name, lest we forget, is an anagram of Grotty Coffee Boy - prefers an old-fashioned china cup. Cook pokes a two past the slip cordon and nurdles a single to fine leg to move to 27 from 38 balls.

South Africa have a glimmer as Westley is rapped on the pad and they appeal... there's a suggestion of an inside edge which means they don't trouble the DRS for now.

I feel for Joe Root slightly. England are no better a side than they were when Cook was under severe pressure as skipper. The renewed optimism of the Root era has slightly papered over the cracks, and has set him up for a fall through no fault of his own. Tough school.

Rabada has started poorly, he might be fresh but he hasn't bowled for a while and it has all been down the leg side.

A lesson for any novice cricket fans - how do you concede five runs (rather than four or six) off one delivery? Here's how..

    10 overs

South Africa respond with a bowling change - Kagiso Rabada, who missed the Trent Bridge Test with suspension, replaces Vernon Philander at the Vauxhall End. He's not quite on the money straight off, firing his first two deliveries down the leg side (which would both have been called wide in limited-overs cricket), and then serving Cook a juicy half-volley on his hip which he guides away for four - that's tradtionally been one of his strongest shots.

A rare single brings Westley on strike, but his first ball from Rabada is way outside off stump. Rabada is perhaps a little rusty - not having bowled in a match for nearly three weeks.

Philander to Jennings in this series; 23 balls he has bowled to him, Jennings has scored two runs and been out three times.

Leaving the ball is very important because eventually it makes the bowler bowl straighter and you can get runs. It's cat and mouse.

Richard Stedeford‏: England would be helped by a right-handed opener to partnership Cook. More bad balls, fewer wicket taking deliveries. Mix it up.

Patrick Brennan‏: In defence of Jennings, he's opened for Durham, which given the conditions, means his 35 average is worth 40+ elsewhere.

    Cook 19, Westley 8

Westley is clad in a sleeveless sweater - I applaud England's return to cable-knit jumpers, but can't help but think that a cream shirt and a bright white sweater looks odder than a white shirt and cream sweater would.

Morkel posts a fielder on the deep square leg boundary, but there's no hint of a bouncer from the right-armer - indeed, a looser delivery on middle and leg is expertly leg-glanced by Westley for his second four of his brief Test career.

Jennings was exposed again, his technique is really poor. He is not really leaving it and not really playing it. You need to be positive in defence as well as attack. He got a hundred in India but conditions there do not expose you to the quicks.
