England should have scored 50 more in their 1st and got Australia out for 50 less in theirs. Cricket is about momentum and pressure and we haven't used either to our advantage

Thanks Amy. Starc at Root, who is still yet to get off the mark. More short stuff but not directed well enough, allowing the England captain to easily duck and weave away.

Root finally does get under way, guiding a shortish delivery round the corner for one.

Stoneman does similar off the last, England now trailing by two.

This has been brilliant new ball bowling from Josh Hazlewood. He gets another delivery to jag past Stoneman's outside edge. The Gabba atmosphere is in full swing. You can feel people willing Australia on. The shadows are starting to lengthen as Hazlewood overpitches, as Stoneman creams him for four. That came right out of the middle of the bat as well. He digs the final delivery away from his toes to end the over.

Right, that's me done for the day. I've seen enough wickets. Here's Jack Skelton.

Jay Barnes: There's now a real chance that England could start the day tomorrow without Root. Is it too early in the day to be hiding behind the sofa?

Adam Lee: I've stayed up all night just to experience one of the least impressive days England could possibly have had. Excellent.

Starc gets things going again by bouncing Root straight away. Root, expecting it, gets under it quickly. Root grins, and then shoulders his arms to the next delivery.

It's three years to the day that Phil Hughes was struck by the blow that killed him. Australia's players were very quick to check on Root.

There's a long chat between Root, the umpires, the physio and Mark Stoneman. That was a stark reminder that all the nonsense spoke around an Ashes series is just that. Words.

That was a hostile ball and Root rather took his eye off that. He didn't play it well. It's really clattered him and there are bits of the helmet falling off.

Fair play to the Australians coming in to make sure the England captain is okay.

Oh! A short ball from Starc has struck Root, and he's gone straight up to Root to check he's okay. That was nasty, actually. It struck Root in the side of the helmet and a part of it has come off. That looked, quite frankly, horrible. A 90mph delivery, Root played it badly and he looks a little disoriented. The physio has come out to see Root.

  10. Here's what you missed...published at 06:46 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

Hello to those of you just waking up and clicking onto BBC Sport to check the score.

You might want to go back to bed. I'm kidding - this has continued to be a cracking Test, here's what you've missed...

Australia faltered to 213-7 at lunch with Anderson and Broad bowling majestically. However, Steve Smith was still there and batting even better.

The Aussie captain brought up his 21st - and slowest - Test century with a gritty, brilliant knock, ably supported by Pat Cummins' 42.

England finally knocked over the last three wickets but not before Australia built a slender lead of 26.

In reply, Alastair Cook has played a rather brainless hook shot and been caught at fine leg.

And James Vince has just edged to second slip. The Test may be slipping away from England here...

The Australian players were pumped having their huddle before they came out for this innings. David Warner was delivering the war words.

    Hazlewood 3-1-6-2

The noise at the Gabba is awesome. Every ball is being clapped, the noise bouncing off the stands as Hazlewood charges in. Joe Root, who, let's be fair, is used to coming in with England two down for not a lot, blocks out the rest of the over.

The crowd are up, Australia are up. They needed to nullify it in these 20 overs, like a football team in the first 20 minutes of an away match.

    Another one goes!

There is more pace in this pitch. It's another delivery that climbs up on the batsman, James Vince pushes at it, and the ball goes through to Steve Smith at a decent height. Smith's not dropping those.

England still trail by nine runs, incidentally.

  15. Eng 17-1published at 5.2 overs

Yeah, this pitch has quickened up. That's superb from Josh Hazlewood, teasing Vince, and the ball goes through to Tim Paine at waist height. There's another edge! Vince has soft hands but he didn't know an awful lot about that delivery, and he's lucky that the ball bounces before it gets to Steve Smith. Might be worth shuffling those slips forward, if you're an Aussie captain.

This is the biggest test of Mark Stoneman's career.

  17. Eng 17-1published at 5 overs

    Vince 2, Stoneman 8

Joe Root looks thoroughly unimpressed up in the dressing room. That's a lovely shot from Mark Stoneman, though, as he's gifted a full ball by Starc and he clips it away to the boundary. Starc responds with an absolute belter of a delivery, as the ball seams and just avoids taking Stoneman's outside edge. Theres' grins all round as Stoneman has another back foot waft at Starc. Meanwhile, Cat Jones on Twitter has pointed out that Starc was in the midst of changing his shoe, external when he took that catch.

Bowser: Think we need a new opening partner for Mark Stoneman.

Gary Blanchard: Cook.... why?! Just because he puts it there doesn't mean you have to attack it. Those balls are there to be left!

That's a rubbish shot from Cook. I wonder if he wasn't expecting it to come on so quickly but he was never in control of the shot. It was a superb bit of bowling from Hazlewood - fast, aggressive, a real effort ball, and Cook just sent a top edge spiralling down towards Mitch Starc. James Vince arrives rather early at the crease, and clips a delivery off his pads to get going.

That was above shoulder height and he couldn't control it. Cook is a great puller of the ball - that's not his shot. Smith has shown what to do on this pitch - occupy the crease, wait for the bad ball and put it away.

    That wasn't smart.
