This could be a trendy rooftop bar in the city, rather than a terrace at the back of a stand at the MCG. You'd never know there's a cricket match going on.

Lyon continues at Cook, who is content to tickle off his pads for a couple and play out the rest of the over.

    Under 10 minutes until tea.

There is just a little bit of movement. It is reverse swing. Just a hint.

    Eng 62-1

Bird finally sorts out his front foot and has Vince flicking at one down the leg side.

Tim Paine snaffles it behind and Australia go up. Not out.

Will they review? Steve Smith asks for someone, anyone to give him a clear shout whether they should. No one is sure and they decide against.

Good decision - replays confirm that flicked Vince's thigh pad on the way through.

Cook cuts in front of square, picking up three more as Lyon races around to just pull it in before the rope.

Bird to Vince - a touch of movement back in and onto the upper part of the pad. Australia appeal but that was high and sliding down.

Problems for Bird with his run up as he sends down two no-balls in a row.

That was another pure stroke from James Vince. He has got the shots. He has got the right type of game. It is just whether he has got the mind.

If you don't like the James Vince cover drive, you don't like cricket.

Another sumptuous stroke sees him middle it to the fence.

Good response from Lyon, a bit more bite into the right-hander that Vince ultimately does well to repel.

Bird offers a little bit of width and, down at 80mph, Cook duly cuts it away for four. All those familiar parts of his game working well so far.

Cummins is unwell with a stomach upset but is walking back onto the field now.

It has been the best we have seen from Cook so far in this series. He is moving more towards the ball with his head position.

He is never one to get a massive stride in but you can see he is working hard to get his momentum back towards the ball.

Cook works Lyon away for one before Vince goes on the attack, trying to smash Lyon away over mid-wicket.

It hangs in the air, with Australia briefly calling for the catch, but falls safe near the rope for a couple.

Decent intent from Vince but a shot you'd hate to get out playing. The plan appears to be to play Lyon more positively.

That mustn't be a bad bat Cook has got. Even David Warner couldn't stop that.

    Cook 26, Vince 4

Cook stands tall and punches Bird dead straight down the ground to the fence. Delicious.

A wide one is sliced out towards deep point for a single, bringing Vince on strike.

The Hampshire man tries to pull but it keeps low and rattles the thigh pad. Not the shot to play on this pitch. A more solid defensive stroke to finish.

Pat Cummins looked in a fair amount of discomfort after his previous over and duly left the field.

Not sure what the problem, if any, is at the moment but Jackson Bird is back into the attack to replace Cummins.

Nathan Lyon to Cook, who rocks back and cuts it away for a single.

Lyon has been excellent in this series but I'm absolutely not having this GOAT nickname. There are more caveats to that than a dodgy tenancy agreement.

Shot! Vince likes it there - Lyon looping up a half-volley that the England number three scythes away through the covers for four.

Pat Cummins to continue at Alastair Cook, who prods it away for a single.

James Vince to face pace for the first time, no run from the last two balls of the over.

  17. Eng 35-1published at 12 overs

James Vince is the new man in and calmly prods away the final three deliveries of Lyon's over.

That was a tremendous catch off his own bowling, but isn't even the best one he's managed this series. He pulled off a blinder to remove Moeen Ali in Adelaide.

I don't think you are ever really in on this pitch. Whether it held up a little bit, Stoneman just got a leading edge.

He was looking to be positive.

    Dazzler!

Mark Stoneman comes down the pitch, trying to work Nathan Lyon through mid-wicket area but pops up a leading edge.

Lyon leaps back and takes a fine one-handed catch above his head.

A strange dismissal and not one you sensed was coming but Lyon makes the breakthrough.
