I would have been tempted to declare. I would have given Australia's openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft 20 minutes to bat at the end of the day. I am not sure another 20 runs would have a big difference but it would have made a big difference to get rid of them tonight.

Did England miss a trick by not declaring and giving Australia a tricky spell to negotiate at the end of the day? Michael Vaughan seems to think so...

Jason Hall: As much as he's been class for England, its time for Moeen to take a break from England to sort his head out. Give Mason Crane a chance, the ashes are lost, time to try out some future talent.

Moeen has had no success playing normally in the series so he thought he would try something different and you have got to give him a little credit but it was too frantic.

This pitch should have suited his style.

The concern is he thought his only option was to hit every ball for four. To get out for 20 off 14 balls you have got to have more of a game to grow an innings on a flat wicket.

Alastair Cook might have found form but one England player still struggling is Moeen Ali. He took no wickets in Australia's innings and his problems with the bat also continued as he was out for 20 off 14 balls.

He went for the strategy of smashing his way out of trouble but only managed to get out to spinner Nathan Lyon for the sixth time in seven innings.

Jeremy Palmer: Good stuff from Cook and hope he carries his bat, bonus to see Broad has remembered he can bat.

Stuart Broad survived his bouncer barrage to score only his second half-century in four years.

His knock was finally ended when Usman Khawaja tumbled at third man to take a catch off Pat Cummins.

There was some doubt if Khawaja had taken the catch cleanly but Broad was given out by the third umpire after numerous replays.

Let's give Stuart Broad some credit as well. After taking four wickets in Australia's innings, he finally made a meaningful contribution with the bat, despite being peppered with some short stuff.

Broad made 56 from 63 balls, including eight fours and one six.

Alastair Cook has gone past Mahela Jayawardene and Brian Lara today on the list of highest run-scorers in Test cricket but he's not as good as those players technically. He makes up for it with his mental strength and his ability to concentrate.

At Perth he was pushing whereas here he was swinging the bat more confidently and assertively.

It's been a very, very good innings from Alastair Cook. He was dropped twice, which are the only flaws. Technically, it's among the best times I have seen Cook bat. He was helped by a pitch that suits his game more now.

On the fast bouncy pitch at Perth he struggled. Here on a more sub-continent style pitch, which has been slow, low and abrasive, he has been able to play with a straight bat and get back into the ball to play forward. he looked in total control.

Once Cook felt the technical challenges were within his grasp then he saw the big score there for the taking.

Can England batsman Alastair Cook keep moving up the batting chart for most runs in Test cricket? He's sixth at the moment with Kumar Sangakkara fifth, 444 runs ahead.

"Who knows? Things haven't really changed for me. I try to score runs every time I bat for England," said Cook.

"So far the series hasn't gone that well but today is a good day. I'm not sure I'm allowed to say it, but I will have a beer tonight."
