  1. Eng 256-6published at 90 overs

    Curran 4, Moeen 12

If you're Steve Smith, you'd never tire of watching that catch. It's obscene how good it is.

Moeen, meanwhile, works a single before Tom Curran gets a bit of a working over by Nathan Lyon. There's spin there for Lyon, the ball rising up as Curran plays from deep in his crease.

Steve Smith is a very good second slip but is atrocious at first slip. You watch different angles from each position. That was stunning catch.

  3. Eng 255-6published at 89 overs

We've seen some blinding catches in this series but that is an almighty one from Steve Smith. Low to his left, having to dive and stretch to get his hand to the ball... stunning.

Tom Curran is the new man in, and helps himself to a boundary from his first ball as Starc spears one wide.

That's a quite brilliant catch! What a ripper!

You think of the catch he didn't take yesterday, he's made amends there.

    What a catch!

That is a sterling grab from Steve Smith. Stunning work. Mitch Starc entices the edge out of Dawid Malan, Smith dives at second slip and takes a low, one handed snaffle. He really had to throw himself at that - the ball was trailing down to the ground and Smith had to move quickly to his left.

A bit of a false shot from Moeen, he was reaching forward for it, but it was wide enough of gully.

  7. Eng 251-5published at 88.3 overs

Mitch Starc will continue, and Moeen times a punch off the back foot nicely to get another couple. That's, er, less convincing, Moeen throwing his arms forward and getting a thick outside edge, but the ball rolls past gully and away for four.

Rory Taylor: Perhaps Jonny Bairstow is the nightwatchman for Moeen Ali on this occasion?

  9. Eng 244-5published at 88 overs

Moeen does what any sensible batsman does when they're struggling - nabs a run off his first ball and gets down the other end. Steve Smith stares up at the sky in annoyance.

Shot! That's an almighty strike from Dawid Malan, cracking a short delivery from Nathan Lyon through cover. Lyon responds with a beauty that just turns and bounces past Malan's outside edge.

Here comes Nathan Lyon into the attack against two left-handers. And Moeen Ali is one of them...

  11. Postpublished at 23:24 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

And there is the change for Australia - Nathan Lyon is coming into the attack, with Moeen on strike.

A much emptier SCG at the moment, the earlier start probably meaning that a few haven't been able to get here for the resumption. Expect it to be full, though, especially the queues for buses at Central Station are anything to go by.

  13. Eng 239-5published at 87 overs

    Malan 58, Moeen 3

Moeen pops Mitch Starc off his pads for a single, while Dawid Malan half-considers a tickle at another leggy delivery. Malan cracks a cut away and Usman Khawaja, tumbling to his right at gully, pulls off a fine, one-handed save to stop the ball going to the boundary.

Shot! That's nice from Malan, pushing the ball back down the ground with ease, and he picks up a couple.

I agree with you on that, Nick. It was a lovely delivery from Josh Hazlewood but Bairstow just played a nothing sort of waft at it.

It's less about who the nightwatchman was, but more about Bairstow playing attacking shots in the last over of the day. Just see the day out, regardless of who you are.

  16. Eng 236-5published at 86 overs

The second run of the day comes as Dawid Malan as he plonks the ball past mid-off, while Moeen stays solid in defence. He clips a single off his hip while Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins whirl their arms around their heads in an effort to loosen up. Lyon has, of course, dismissed Moeen in all but one innings on this tour.

Box of a gazebo discarded at the bin nearest to Gate One of the SCG. Has got me wondering about who brings a gazebo to the cricket.

Early days but Moeen looks a bit more settled. He ducks under a bouncer from Mitch Starc in a slightly ungainly fashion, throwing his body and his head to one side, and leaves anything he doesn't need to play at. Starc glares at Moeen as he rounds off another maiden.

There's a bit in this pitch, but it's not extravagant. It's not that quick. Pat Cummins was a bit disappointed by the lack of pace.

  20. Eng 234-5published at 84 overs

    Malan 55, Moeen 1

Ooft. Dawid Malan fends a bit awkwardly at a short Hazlewood delivery, before he swings a drive at a tempting delivery and misses. Malan, wisely, shoulders arms to everything else.

Meanwhile, we're seeing a highlights reel - and I use the word highlights loosely - of Moeen's frenetic innings in Melbourne. Awful.
