  1. Aus 163-2published at 57 overs

A half-hearted appeal for lbw as Usman Khawaja shapes to sweep and Mason Crane drifts one into his pads. Khawaja then carries on his favourite game - dropping the ball just teasingly short of Mark Stoneman at short leg.

That's too full from Crane, and Khawaja whips it away for a leisurely single.

More runs off the outside edge, and Usman Khawaja does well to dart through for three. James Anderson readjusts, and Smith defends.

Moeen, meanwhile, is busying himself with fielding a beach ball that has drifted onto the field. He hands it to a security guard, rather than the crowd, which brings about a few boos

We've seen more false shots from Steve Smith today than the rest of the series because England have finally bowled properly to him.

They've put in three slips and a gully and bowled at the top of off stump.

  6. Aus 160-2published at 55 overs

    Smith 30, Khawaja 72

Usman Khawaja comes shimmying down to Mason Crane's first two deliveries but he can't beat the field. He finally connects but he makes a real meal of the shot, coming down and spooning a wider delivery up into the air and in front of Moeen down on the boundary.

There probably was a time when I wasn't watching Steve Smith bat. I just don't remember when it was.

Smith offers up a loose sort of drive to Broad and the ball takes the inside edge, but it bounces in front a fielder. Smith's gone into full fidget mode now.

That's a genuine edge from Steve Smith and Jonny Bairstow had to dive across because it wasn't reaching Alastair Cook at first slip. The slip cordon aren't even that far away from the wicket.

  10. Aus 159-2published at 53.3 overs

Close, again! Another edge from Steve Smith, pushing forward to Stuart Broad, and the ball drops between Jonny Bairstow and Alastair Cook at first slip. Smith played it with soft hands, but Broad still looks like he might explode.

Steve Smith has drawn level with Garfield Sobers as the second-fastest batsman to reach 6,000 Test runs in terms of innings.

    Here are the best records:

    • 68 innings - Donald Bradman (Aus)
    • 111 - Garfield Sobers (WI) & Steve Smith (Aus)
    • 114 - Wally Hammond (Eng)
    • 116 - Ken Barrington (Eng), Len Hutton (Eng) & Kumar Sangakkara (SL)

With a pulled single, Steve Smith registers his 6,000th Test run. Another milestone for the batting machine. He's the second fastest to that total, after Bradman. He raises his bat to the crowd in a lackadaisical sort of manner.

I was very, very annoyed about Joe Root's dismissal - until I went to see Liam Gallagher last night.

He gave a shout out to the England cricket team: "It's not really happened, has it?"

Mason Crane is going to carry on. He's got figures of 0-41 from his 11 overs so far.

Stuart Broad is trying to look as phlegmatic as he can but his eyes are narrowing.

  16. Aus 152-2published at 52 overs

    Khawaja 69, Smith 25

Close! Steve Smith throws his hands at a slightly wider delivery and the edge falls just short of Joe Root, again falling to his right, at slip. Broad looks like he might go full hissy fit, but he refrains as the ball rolls away for four.

A single brings Khawaja on strike and Broad gets one to swing in and somehow nip over the top of his off stump.

Drinks over and done with, and Stuart Broad will continue to Steve Smith.

I'm really excited by Mason Crane. He's had the odd loose one, which is understandable for a 20-year-old leg-spinner on a great batting track.

But he's caused problems. Usman Khawaja had to come down the track to try and hit Crane off his length and that's a feather in the cap of the youngster.

Khawaja presses forward and the ball hits the glove and hovers in the air. Mark Stoneman and Mason Crane both come charging in, desperate for the catch, and it drops in the middle of them.

Lovely stuff from the leggie. That'll be drinks.
