Decent over from Bumrah, just a single to Cook off it, with a nice push down the ground.

Alastair Cook has become only the second player to score 50+ in both innings of both his debut and his final Test match.

    South Africa's Bruce Mitchell is the other (88, 61* v England, 1929; 99, 56 v England, 1948-49).

    Lead by 168

Cook gets off strike by scampering a single leg-bye.

Root then rocks back and deftly dabs down to third man for a couple. Touch.

I reckon Cook might have thought that he will play a few shots this morning.

Ha. All that and Jadeja lobs up a half-volley that Cook clatters through the covers for four.

This will be tricky for Cook, Jadeja bowling into the rough.

  9. Postpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 10 September 2018

Ravindra Jadeja has wonderfully shown precisely zero concern that this Test is supposed to be about Alastair Cook.

Four wickets in the first innings, 86 not out with the bat and the wicket of Moeen Ali yesterday.

The slow left-armer is into the attack...

    Cook 52, Root 30

Cook tries to go through the greatest hits by bringing out the hook but it's a quick bumper from Bumrah that hurries the Englishman and the ball gets through.

A punch into the covers brings one more for Cook.

Bumrah fires the last delivery into a slightly sensitive area of Joe Root, who seems fine.

We've seen that shot a few times - he's got a few runs off the hip over the years.

People are standing again. That was a lovely shot, one of his trademarks. He wants more, but there is the first landmark.

  14. 50 runs

Well there's the first milestone down.

Jasprit Bumrah aims it at Alastair Cook's hips and you know the rest. The England opener tucks it crisply away for four. Shot.

That guarantees a career average of 45.00 at least.

I asked Joe why he was wearing a shirt with Ben Stokes' number on it last night - it's because the old fella who labels the shirts when they come out of the tumble drier got it wrong.

The Oval rises, once again, for Alastair Cook.

  17. Eng 116-2published at 44 overs

    Cook 47, Root 30

Root flashes loosely outside off and misses before defending the last.

  18. Eng 116-2published at 43.4 overs

Ishant Sharma slides onto Alastair Cook's pads...

...and of course he clips it into leg for a single.

There was probably two there but Ravindra Jadeja was the man doing the fielding. He's got a gun of an arm.

  19. Eng 115-2published at 43.3 overs

Ishant Sharma aims that inswinger at Joe Root's pads but the ball moves too far down leg and Rishabh Pant gathers.

Root taps into off and scampers a single for the first run of the day.

    Cook on strike next up...

Cook started his career off with a second-innings hundred against India - and a first-innings fifty. The symmetry could be spooky.
