I was skiing in the French Alps. Lots of French, Italian, German accents. Whilst going up the ski lift, I heard a bloke one cart in front of me talking about cricket in a Midlands twang. When we got to the top, I caught a glimpse of his profile and thought it was Notts skipper Chris Read. "Chris Read!?" I shouted. He looked at me and then shot off down the slope. Being a reasonable man, I couldn't be sure if it was indeed Chris Read so decided to chase him down the slope screaming at the top of my lungs "Mate, are you Chris Read?". It wasn't Chris Read.

Philander, the miser, trundles in and gets one to bounce into the inner thigh of Sibley. There's an appeal, but it's miles too high. Blimey, this is a helluva leave from Sibley. who plays no stroke to one that only misses the off stump by a coat of paint.

RE: Slow demises in sport. What about knockout ties in Europe where the first leg is 5-0 and you have to wait two weeks for the return? Surely that's worse than a couple of days in the sun on a cricket field...

For whatever reason, the TV cameras are getting a lot of shots of people snoozing in the crowd. Vernon Philander is coming back into the attack.

David Miliband often pops in to the TMS box, just to say hello. Still Pretorius, bowling to Root with two slips so close they could almost be in the batsman's pocket. The short mid-on fielder is standing in front of non-striker Dom Sibley. A maiden.

Earlier on, Graham Thorpe was watching the action through some comically large binoculars. Now Jonny Bairstow has them trained on the crowd. What's he looking for? If he's not watching the action, he'll have missed Root sweeping Maharaj for four.

I'm trying to think of a sport where the demise is more elongated than cricket. In football or rugby, even a heavy defeat is over in a couple of hours. In golf you miss the cut. In tennis you can be knocked out in the first round. South Africa may have to endure this for two more days.

If Dom Sibley can go on and get a hundred here, it's not important just for this match but for his career and England's future.

It would be so good for England to have two settled openers with Rory Burns and Sibley.

Maharaj is now experimenting with his line, sometimes coming round the wicket to this pair of right-handers. When he's too short, Sibley cuts for four. You just wonder if England have found an opener here.

South Africa have been slow in reacting to Joe Root upping the tempo.

I didn't mind them bowling defensively when they had Joe Denly and Dom Sibley in, trying to draw them into a rash shot trying to score and it worked to remove Denly.

But now England have quickly moved into a lead of nearly 200.

My mother, waiting on the door at a school function, refused to let Mike Gatting in, gently explaining that "we have to wait until Mike Gatting gets here before anyone else can come in, he used to be the England captain". When he explained the situation, in an effort to try and save face she said he "seemed to be very much enjoying retirement". Classic mother.

This might not be the most thrilling viewing, but I've got absolutely no problem with how England are going about this. If we've complained that they have thrown wickets away, we can't be disgruntled when they are patiently trying to secure a Test. However, even if he does go on to score a stack of runs, watching Dom Sibley might be an acquired taste.

It's strange, isn't it? Even the most patient players fall into the trap eventually. Sibley has been less likely to be tempted into a shot than a teetotal monk, and yet even he can't resist flicking across the line and against the spin at Maharaj. It results in a leading edge that almost carries to point.

Quinton de Kock is up to the stumps for Pretorius and there is a very straight short mid-on, with his left foot almost on the pitch. Sibley, the Warwickshire Wall, takes a single to mid-on as the sun tries its best to poke through. England are grinding South Africa down.
