That was a fantastic appeal from Niroshan Dickwella. I really approve of that.

I love watching Joe Root bat. Another sweep, this one finer than before, brings up England's 50.

Another sweep brings about a very enthusiastic lbw appeal from Ramesh Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella, which would be fine, had Root not under-edged it down to the boundary.

England are making it pretty obvious that they are wanting to play the sweep. Sri Lanka should take someone out from the off side, and put another man on the on side, and offer the opportunity.

    Root 25, Bairstow 17

Jonny Bairstow plays a wild drive at Dilruwan Perera and then holds the pose, as though he's nailed the ball for four, rather than missed it on its way throughto the keeper.

That's more like it, though, Bairstow standing out of his crease so he can get down and thump a sweep away for four.

Jonathan France: The problem England have now is that they’ve just given Sibley a central contract, so they kinda have to play him despite his continuous struggles against spin.

  6. Eng 43-2published at 18 overs

Quite a high action from off-break bowler Ramesh Mendis, which Joe Root takes a look at and sweeps nicely down to deep square leg for four. He is such a good player of spin.

Now then. Here's debutant Ramesh Mendis.

Edward Laslett: Give Bairstow a shot at opening in India. That’s the only way he finds a regular place in this Test side if we’re accepting Buttler has the gloves. He’s too good a player not to be given the chance.

Jonny Bairstow has an ugly hoick of a drive at the next delivery, before getting a third that sharply turns and bounces to rap him on the pads.

He tries to sweep a full ball but misses, then gets another sharp turner. He did not look comfortable there.

Here's Dilruwan Perera, who batted extremely well...

...and he almost has Jonny Bairstow caught behind first up! Bairstow shapes to cut and just misses.

Embuldeniya has a good release point. It is wide on the crease and creates more of the angle. The two openers have struggled to compensate for that.

  14. Eng 37-2published at 16 overs

Another over of spin negotiated with ease by Joe Root.

Ian Benson: We are no worse off than Sri Lanka were. Let's all have a cuppa and strap in for the usual England rollercoaster.

  16. Eng 35-2published at 15 overs

Joe Root starts the over with the finest of tickles off his hip for four. He then looks at his bat with suspicion as he gets a full toss from Asitha Fernando and he clubs it along the ground to the man at cover.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

This is a great challenge for England. They could experience a lot in the next four Test matches because the average first-innings score is 400.

England need to get used to being this far behind in the game, and you could lose the odd early wicket and you've got to trust yourself to rebuild a partnership.

  18. Eng 28-2published at 14 overs

It does feel much calmer with these two at the crease, as Joe Root works an easy couple of runs down to third man.
